I've definitely gone to only burning Rec 90, I feel better about cleaning up my engine now. I try to slow shift but in a tight spot sometimes you just have to shift faster that you should? I run my boat all year long but she does sit a bit more in the winter. I stabilize the fuel left in the tank and try to top off the tank before it sits to reduce the surface area open to oxidation and vaporization. Just ran her in a parade on the lake last night in Georgia! Time for plugs and wires....

Great video once again.. I fish in freezing weather up here in the north and it sometimes gets tough to clean off all the salt.. I do my best when I get home. I only stop running my boat for 3 months Jan,Feb,and March.. I change my oil every 50hrs and it's black. Gear oil every 100. I think it's better to change oil in spring because moisture can build in oil over the winter months. Theres so many people who winterize in the fall and do oils at the same time.. who knows.. anyway love you're videos and thank you for the time you take to make them.

Fyi no amount of flushing the early 2000 225 4 stroke Yammys would prevent the corrosion in the exhaust manifold as fresh water does not flow in that manifold. This was a defect in the Yamaha metallurgy at the time. If not caught early enough this would ruin the midsection to block interface.

Thank you for your detailed explanations in your videos! I recently replaced our '05 mercury Optimax 150's on our family boat with mercury twin 2019 150 four-strokes. It's a much better experience. The DFI oil was killing us. The oil is about $45/gallon retail - $33 or so a gallon online if you catch a sale. Our boat used to hold about 5 gallons of 2 stroke oil. I have always loved 2 strokes, but for running offshore the mercury 150 four strokes work better for us. We were burning close to 4 gallons on a typical canyon trip out of Indian River, DE with the Optimax's. I have followed the 150 four stroke since 2011. But, your videos helped my family decide that the 150 four strokes were the way to go for us. The maintenance is super easy too! Thank You! Mark Wiebner and Family Indian River, DE New Holland, PA

Yes, most dealers should be able to work on a lower, but as far as rebuilding one. It depends on what you are trying to do. With the expense it costs in hours for shop labor. A lot of times, because it is a time consuming project, it's not worth rebuilding a lower unit because you can find a used one or buy a replacement lower for about the same price. So it really depends on what you are trying to do.

No worries, thank you for your support! Yes, absolutely lol lots of Yami's "make oil." It's usually from extended no wake, idle, or trolling time. But there are a few models that do it more excessively than others. As long as you keep an eye on it then it's not going to be anything to worry about. We've seen them go 150-200 hours and have like a gallon fuel of oil!

@@BornAgainBoating It's good to hear that point of view. My F300 is doing it and the Marina where I purchased it said it probably wasn't broken in correctly and the rings didn't seat. They sent me to "The Hull Truth", where there's a 14 page thread saying it's a problem that Yamaha, sometimes, isn't willing to "fix". Its a 2015 motor I bought this summer with only 30 hrs. They did some kind of upper head clean and told me to run the blank out of it, which I did. Still making oil...doesn't seem right to have the "lubricity" of the oil compromised by gasoline.

ACTUAL SALT IN THE AIR; I googled it and there is salt content in sea air? I wondered how significant THAT IS, regarding, EFI and or Carburetors, when running engines in salt water venues? 1473.4 F, evaporates salt or (800.8 C). A healthy "cooling system" on an outboard thermostats Out at; 140F to 160F. Therefore, those salty carbon molecules aren't going anywhere? Certainly the exhaust baffles run much hotter but that process takes place long after the salt content mixes with the fuel? food for thought.

Regarding the Yamaha F225 corrosion issue, is it not true that no amount of flushing will prevent these engines from consuming themselves? The corrosion occurs at a point in the exhaust path above where cooling water enters the path, so salt isn't causing the corrosion. Poor metallurgy or coatings are the issues at play.

Running slightly lean often makes best power, and they really don’t worry about the damage front running lean because race engines are usually serviced much more frequently than your average engine and maximum life and longevity aren’t as much of a concern as maximum power is. Kinda like a top fuel dragster engine is torn down and rebuilt after every 1000’ pass. But your daily driver car can go thousands of miles without service. Although top fuel cars are run extremely rich to the point of “dieseling” and nearly hydrolocking as they also use their fuel to moderate cylinder temperatures.

It was good, it's always nice to get around other techs and here about stuff going on across the industry. As well as talk to the tech support guys, the instructors, and play around with the bugged engines :)

Great video, any differences in maintenance for those of us that are fresh water only? #Yamaha
@johnpike5836

factory spec. maintenance is standard, but it always depends on what your boat use and purpose is. I always ran about 15% richer oil mix, spark plug fouling is a lot less upsetting than an overhaul. A major factor is the quality of fuel. Marina's have a reputation for watery gas (and are expensive) but if your marina service seaplanes try a 50% mix of aviation fuel. freshwaterguytoo

Not really, just a lot less cleaning and you don't need to use as much grease lol you still want to change all the same stuff and grease all the same points. You just don't see all of the corrosion issues as salt water!

Born Again Boating I heard that wd was bad cause it had petroleum based stuff ? So I use silicone I thought that was the way to go
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
@@georgematos1086 you know that's possible. I've not heard of anyone that used it having a problem. But most people I know that have used WD are on two strokes. I guess if you use too much of it, it could have an affect on the wires. Sorry @J Sails stick to the dry silicone, yamashield, or shine products :/

@@georgematos1086 we use CRC dry silicone, and yamashield mostly

I have a 2012 Yamaha f70 with analog gauges how can I find out how many hours I have on it?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Well, you won't be able to without hooking it up to a computer that is registered with a Yamaha dealer :( Good thing is that the engine does store the hours. Maybe call a local dealer and see if you can swing by with your boat and pay them for 15 minutes of time to hook it up and give you the hours :)

Consider upgrading to Yamaha digital tachometer (loads on eBay) - it will remind you when your engine is due for a service. Furthermore depending on which model your engine is you might be able to monitor oil pressure, engine temperature and voltage - which can assist in detecting engine issues early.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
There's normally not much to clean, but you do want to look at it every now and then, whenever you service the engine. If it's a little dirty you can just brush it off and you're good to go!

Great Video, I have a 2007 200hp Verado and I was wondering what the baseline readings for water pressure, oil pressure and temp would be on the smartcraft gauges should be so I can monitor this.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you and awesome! That's a 6 cylinder 200 right? Your water pressure will vary at idle down to 1 psi sometimes but usually around 1.5 or 2 or so, then at wide open it can get all the way up to like 16 or 18 sometimes higher! Oil pressure should stay above 60 psi at wide open it can get up to 80 or higher. Then the oil temp I'm not 100% sure on, but it'll be in the 200's.
