All the trim tabs I’ve played with over the years, the port bow down switch actuates the starboard tab and Vice versa for the STB bow and port tab. This is over many different brands, manufacturers, builders.

Bennett "Bolt" tabs are all-electric. They come as a full kit, or as replacements for faulty Lenco actuators, and have a lifetime guarantee. Good stuff. One benefit of all-electric tabs is not needing a spot for the pump. Nice for smaller boats, especially.

Another use for trim tabs it to be able to get a heavy boat up on plane faster. I have to put my tabs all the way down when I start and this pushes the back up out of the water to get on plane faster.

They are a great aide on flats boat helping you get on plane in very shallow water with tabs all the way down stern is lifted on take off launch can be done with motor trimmed up more than normal and you slowly trim down the motor as momentum increases until you pop onto a plane

#yeti I have a 23 footer and the trim tabs didn’t work when I got the boat. Mine are hydraulic and I didn’t know anything about boats or trim tabs. Turned out to be just the switch. I took the wires loose and stuck them straight to the battery and the thing worked. So I spliced in a new switch and it made a world of difference. I use them all the time now! Makes a world of difference running through miles of gulf chop. I can bury the sharper part of the bow into it and it’s so much smoother. Guzzles gas, but it’s worth it.

I've had tabs on all my boats, from 17' to 29', inboards to outboards. I consider them essential. WRT to holes in the transom on a cored hull, do it right the first time and its never an issue. Drill holes oversize by a good margin. Then fill those holes with solid glass. Redrill the smaller holes required to mount the tabs. 5200 the holes.

I won a bet (and an argument) from two seasoned boaters who laughed at me when I told them that activating the left (port) switch for "bow down" controls the right (starboard) tab and the right (starboard) switch for bow down controls the left (port) tab. Even after I showed them a document from Bennett explaining it, they still didn't believe it until they tested it on one of their boats.

There's also those interceptor designed tabs as well. They have them on the 41' Bahamas with the quad engine setup because the boat is so narrow the normal trim tabs would disrupt the water flow to the outside engines

You forgot Smart Tabs. They absolutely fantastic on small RIBs or small boats that have a lot of bow rise while getting on plane. No need to use and wear out power trim on every acceleration. The only contribute at the start and then they are virtually neutral. No drag like foil types that can limit your top speed. I’ve used them on as small as 310 RIBs with actuator placement change. Should be standard equipment in my opinion on some small boats.

Thank you once again; I have just learned a weeks worth of great information, in 8 minutes!... I have the Lenco's and they have been good so far; in 40+ years (20+boats) of boating, it's my first boat with trim-tabs. At first I was over-using them. Now I use the engine-tilt to get on plane, and only use the trim-tabs sparingly to 'balance' the boat. (Is that a good policy?)... My last 2 boats were big, displacement, diesel cruisers; no trim tabs, so tabs have been a learning curve for me.... Thank you once again!

Hahah Thank you! Awesome! That's a lot of experience :) and yeah, that's great usage. Most of the time you shouldn't need them unless the water is just messing you up. Those parkers are usually pretty good without them most of the time because of the weight of the cabin :)

Yes and No. It depends. It is the right way to trim a boat but not the only way. the ability to trim on the run is a major asset. deep vee's with stern drives benefit most. loads vary as do conditions. modified vee's do better. inboards do better if engine is located right. know your boat AND your tabs - do Not oversize trim tabs. the boat will be over sensitive to the controls.

At about 1:50 you said putting the tab down on the heavy side of the boat will lift that side of the boat? Don't you mean putting the tab down on the opposite side will level then boat by bringing the opposite side down?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating Ай бұрын
Kind of hard to explain, so the tab going down, creates stern lift on that side of the boat, which will bring it up, but creates drag, so it pulls the boat to that side, and at the same time pushes the bow down on the opposite side of the boat. Does that make better sense?

Using power tools to fasten bolts to your fiberglass is a bad idea. Take some extra time and do it by hand. If you over tighten that screw it will over size the hole and more then likely crack the gel coat around the hole. Patience goes a long way!

Most boats need trim tabs as they are shallow in the vee and under speed they want to fall over , bad design , most of these boats are top heavy , most are outboard driven and the motor foward thrust with speed lesson the waterline length making the boat unstable so the tabs level the boat up in rough weather they are useless as speed is the problem in fowl weather some of these things are on 35 footers up , so good luck.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Depends, most little boats don't have them, but then like flats boats that are used in the ocean more, they usually come with them. So it depends on where you are boating to make them worth it or not. If you don't ever go offshore and usually are on a calm lake. They won't really help with anything :)

trim tabs are a bandaid . get a hull vane. i watch all these expensive and high tech boats take off everyday at the no wake sign by my marina. they are all wrong. they are not balanced and all mass is shifted to the stern at accel. tilt and trim also require brute force to work. much fuel consumption and no go. i saw a 45 ft v bottom with a hull vane. it planed almost immediately and didnt plow tons of water to climb up on hull. look them up. it has no moving parts and can be installed with the boat in the water sometimes. im building one for my 30' sea ray . it's a 1976 deep v hull .normally planes at 12 to 14 knots. currently the trim tabs do nothing for mitigating the prop wash and directing it aft. instead it just boils the water behind the v. too much turbulence. my boat is a mid engine staight shaft inboard .with two 351 fords. the key is to align the wing with the center of prop wash . i feel it works much like a ducted prop but with less drag. the wing (vane) also creates lift as an airplane wing does. this balances the mass at acceleration and allows forward movement with less pushback from water.it also reduces wake by an incredible degree.

Which trim tabs are more reliable, or will last longer? Electric o hydraulic?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 жыл бұрын
Now a days, they all hold up pretty well during most conditions and they last about the same amount of time. They each have their own problems though, so it's hard to say one is better or will last longer than the other. Obviously, the electric actuators in the water, eventually fail, sometimes sooner than the hydraulic. But, the hydraulic have solenoids on the pumps that go bad, and they can leak and have the pumps in the boat fail in the same amount of time. So, I guess it's more of a personal preference :)
@thilltony3362
@thilltony3362 3 жыл бұрын
Look at old boats with still working tabs, and almost all are hydraulic, with the pumps in a good, dry location. That being said, Bennett Bolts are electric tabs with a lifetime warranty, so either can be a good choice.

Wait until you water test it, and see if it has a bad rooster tail. If no bad spray, deeper tends to read better at speed, but it's a fine line. I had a big side-scan 'ducer that made a rooster tail that sprayed exactly where the outboard's air intake was. Inside, the engine was literally covered in salt spray. Had to add a spray plate over the 'ducers to eliminate the spray, because it would stop reading at speed when we adjusted up enough to stop the spray. I have added a number of those plates over the years.

Electric are far superior, everything is in the actuators. They react quicker, don’t have a pump or reservoir, so less maintenance and issues.
@thilltony3362
@thilltony3362 3 жыл бұрын
I strongly disagree with this statement for a number of reasons. 1. On some applications, Lencos are "touchy" or hard to set right because they move too fast. 2. When Lenco seals leak, it fries the electric motor, and you need new actuators, but no lifetime warranty. It's just a matter of time. By comparison, most hydraulic tabs last decades with no problem, as long as the pump isn't down in the bilge, where water can damage it. And "Tabman", a Bennett rep, has been known to send replacements long after typical warranty is long gone. Bennett makes all-electric tabs, their "Bolt" series, made to directly replace the Lencos, and they DO have a lifetime replacement warranty. I've replaced several Lencos with these, and they are excellent. Only one ever failed, and a new one came in 4 days. Outstanding service and product.

I cringe...as if the boater doesn't have enough time consuming mechanical issues. Maybe it's just me, but the mechanisms seem complex and visibly messy. I liken this concept to; Training Wheels. While in use, the tabs DO drag and this DOES affect fuel consumption. We learn to keep our engines and drives Tuned Up to get better fuel efficiency then we deliberately add stuff to our boats that reduces it? The list of adverse boating circumstances may affect navigating, but isn't that half the fun? To many folks sitting to one side? easy fix? (extra Life Jackets)

Why your outboard boat does not need trim tabs. You already have trim on your outboards. They can effectively be used just like trim tabs.

Really? So if all your guests move to one side of the boat, and the boat is leaning in that direction, how do you fix that without trim tabs? You can't. If you have a funny swell coming off your port side, causing your boat to pount, how do you fix with your outboard? You can't. They are not the same. Power trim tabs offer much more control.

@@thilltony3362 thats when you have you guests evenly distribute their weight. Also if your boat can't handle a little bit of a list then you stay at the dock.simple really! Common sense.

@@CaptainDayne You could ask the family to stay in specific locations and only take your boat out in great weather or face a pounding. But with a touch of a button, trim tabs can take care of that, giving you more comfort and letting you go out more often.

@@thilltony3362 who said anything about great conditions Not me i run in whatever is required. And yes for stability a prudent Captain requires weight equalized. By the way im a 200 ton master. Trim tabs dont reduce sea conditions some times they have very little affect.

Dayne, Maybe it's because you are a 200 ton master that you are missing the point with small, recreational boats. With relatively small boats, even one person going to one side or another can cause lean. Tabs fix that. If there is an annoying 1-2' chop coming at a bad angle, tabs can keep the nose down and/or lean the boat to minimize pounding. Do you really believe tabs are the same as engine trim, or do you just like to win debates?
