As a finance professional, I’m here to tell you, I have lawyers making $400k per year that are buried in Ivy League debt that is eating them alive. On the other hand, I have teachers and customer service reps that are financially free and living comfortably. Four years of college bliss can easily turn into a lifetime nightmare. Don’t forfeit your future for four years in that dream school if you don’t have dream school money.

What I like here is that these aren't people who studied some obscure degree sitting in their parents basement complaining about their loans as some people try to portray them. These people studied for degrees where they should be able to find work, pay back the loan, and contribute to society. This is who is being ripped off by this system.

Yeah but...the one young girl went to NYU for $75k yearly for a music degree. She is going to be burdened for the rest of her life. The other girl decided her love of Duke wasn't worth $300k and will probably never regret that decision. The orthodontist broke down in tears about his debt and paying it back. But in the time between the footage and end credits (1-2 years?), they paid off $400k!!! I bet Dave sat down with him and got them on a serious debt freedom plan.

This was a fantastic documentary...To graduate debt free, most students should attend a community college/in-state university, take CLEP/DSST exams to knock out common credits, apply for scholarships, take online courses to cut down on transportation/living expenses, and ONLY take classes from a REGIONALLY accredited school. National accreditation institutions are trash.

In the 90s, there was a monstrous amount of pressure to go to college. TV shows pushed it hard. And working on exhaust manifolds was considered subhuman almost. Now I don’t regret my accounting degrees and my accounting masters, but that 80k in student loans sucks. Now, we are in BS2 and working on it, but student loans are a long-term mess for a 4 year program. Now I'm going to finish my MBA next year DEBT FREE for that program. And then I want to start a clinical mental health program, but that will also be debt free. Or it won't happen. Good luck everyone and God bless.

Years ago, when I had student loans, I asked for a 3 month forbearance, was told no payments, but interest would add on. When the payments restarted and I saw the big jump in interest and payment, I knew they were not my friend and got gazelle intense to pay them off. So grateful they are paid off. I went to a CSU and got federal student loans as an 18 year old fresh out of high school. I knew at the time what I was getting into and I understood this money had to be paid back in full and was one of the motivations for me to get up and try every day because I knew those loans would drag me down. The student loan repayment pause policy made it even easier for me pay my loans off before I was paying double each month just so I could get at the principal. And In just two years I was done each pay period I put 1000 towards my loans cause an opportunity like that comes once in a little while.

This is a hard video to watch. I'm great full that I graduated debt free, though I do worry about the challenges others may face because you don't know what you don't know and it's kinda scary stepping out into the world, just doing what you think you're supposed to do. It does seem pretty criminal that education and medical debt are exempted from bankruptcy. Sure we all have to pay stupid tax some times, but that is a big hurdle for someone just out the gate of life started with some bad advice.

Great film. Huge DR fan. Would have loved to see more examples of what students did to go to school dept free. Dive into people who applied for scholarships, more students who worked during summers or chose community college instead.

My dad was a Ramsey coach at our church and led me and my siblings through it at home while in high school. It made me determined to get through school debt free. Since they planned to cover half of my schooling, I wanted to do it as cost effectively as possible and pay cash for my part. I earned my associates through a community college and commuted to a university for my last two years, working (almost) full time hours too. It wasn't as fun as getting the college experience, living on campus, or attending the same school all four years, but I graduated with a useful degree, no debt and a decent savings built up. I know it's harder today then 8 years ago, but it's still possible with hard work and sacrifice. I was also able to pay cash for a used car when mine broke down my senior year. So thankful for these common sense principles!

The podcast had an interview with a woman who had come to loathe her degree because of the debt it reminded her of. I feel exactly the same way about my grad school (MBA). Thankfully my wife and I paid off nearly 200K of debt between 2016 and 2019, but I threw away my physical diploma because it represented a sick joke that someone who is supposed to be business savvy could be so lacking in personal financial sense.

One of the best things that ever happened to me was being unable to qualify for loans because i wasn’t a US citizen and someone told me i had to be to take out loans. So, i rented a room in someone’s house for 4 years and worked multiple jobs all through college. Graduated with zero debt. Did the same for grad school. Zero debt. It can absolutely be done, but it was very had to get by. No regrets whatsoever that i did it that way and have no debt of any kind, while most people i know are drowning in it. Anyone can do it, you just have to be willing to work very hard for a long time, but your older self will thank you!

This can apply to other areas of one's life. For example, I have a friend who took a job in a state a full-day's drive away from where he was living, and decided to buy a house instead of renting. A few years later, he needed to move back where he had been before, and tried to sell his house, but values in the area kept falling, and he took a significant loss when it finally sold. I asked him why he had bought the house, and he said "I just thought this is what a person is supposed to do!" I've never owned property, looked for inexpensive places to live, saved the difference, and now I'm enjoying a secure retirement--he is worried as to how he will afford retirement. However, I know homeownership works out well for many people.

As someone who paid off her student loans, I feel their pain. It’s not easy but I had to work my tail off to get rid of it. But the freedom to build wealth and do whatever you want after you pay off is well worth it. Don’t give up y’all! There is light at the end of the tunnel!

This is an important documentary, and I agree that for many, vocational school would be a better (and cheaper) option, you don't have to go to a "big name, big price tag" school to get a great education, and people should think twice before taking on crippling debt they may never be able to climb out of. But the doc lacked balance. The fact is, for certain careers, there IS no other option but to attend college, and in some cases get higher degrees. If you want to become a doctor or lawyer, for example, there is almost no way around getting a bachelor's degree and going on to med school or law school--a pricey endeavor no matter what schools you attend. (Joining the military and having them pay for it is possible, but not everyone is cut out for the military. Joining during war time comes with significant risks, and there are some disabilities that would make joining difficult or impossible.) Some jobs require a BA just to get an interview for an entry-level job. (My mother found this out the hard way when she got laid off from her position as an HR coordinator, a career she'd had for decades, only to find no one would hire her even as a secretary because she didn't have a BA.) You even need a BA to join the Peace Corps. There are some professions that not only does society need (social workers, teachers, engineers) but some people really want to do, and they require degrees. Plus, I think people underestimate the value of having those four years to grow up a bit more, take classes you didn't have access to in high school, and be away from home. Not to mention the networking and social opportunities. Definitely talk about vocational training, entrepreneurship, and the military as options. But also stress ways to make college affordable or free for yourselves or for your kids (529 programs, scholarships, community college, schools that are free for residents). Talk about the fact that a bachelor's should not be required for every office job. I see no reason that you need a bachelor's to be a secretary. Also, the part about loans that keeps people in unimaginable debt is the interest. Interest rates that are higher than people pay on mortgages should be illegal. And all of these topics should be part of a mandatory financial literacy class in high school. I know I had no clue what kind of financial burden I was taking on when I signed up for loans as a 17-year-old kid.

@@greenleafyman1028 I understand the path you chose, and it was a practical one. But I also think that's sad. That's basically telling poorer kids nope, you can't be doctors or lawyers or engineers or astronauts or teachers...that's just for rich kids. And when we think about how race often intersects with class, and the systemic racism present in some of those professions, that's not a great road to go down. I would rather find equitable solutions that make college accessible for all who want to go (without going into a lifetime of crippling debt) while making sure that vocational school remains a viable and desirable option as well.

I was dumb enough to take student loans for grad school. It took my wife and me 7 years of living like students after graduation while working full time to pay off the loans. We did not buy anything new and spent on only necessities. Never again. We are cash flowing our daughter's college in-state, so that she will have zero debt upon graduation.

College does not have the ROI it used to. It's just not worth it anymore. And the fact that so many companies don't even require a degree anymore affirms it worthlessness. It's infuriating! And the fact that it can't be discharged in bankruptcy, it feels like a death sentence. And no one...NO ONE can even explain how interest is calculated is mind numbing!
