We installed a Bosch heat pump in our West Virginia home. Here's how it looks on my Emporia Vue energy monitor.
I focus on a recent cold day.

Very interesting! I just went all electric in my 1200 SQ foot home in Corning, NY. I replaced a low end gas furnace and gas water tank with a 2 ton LGred ccASHP and central air handler, along with a State HPWH. To get the load down we insulated the attic with cellulose and spray foamed the rim joists. I'll have to check the paperwork for the blower door, but it wasn't anything crazy. I use the LG controller to retain the communicating function. Very happy with the system so far but I'd like to monitor my consumption with something like this. Thanks for the insights and great videos...I've shared them with some friends who are considering electrification, especially given some of the incentives here in NYS.

Looking at your minute graph you are short cycling... 10 minute run times is bad... also on what is the ODU targeting- it is targeting certain high pressure in heat mode and certain low pressure in cooling.

You are absolutely correct. The house has about a 28,000 btu heat load at 11F design and about a 1 ton cooling load. This was the smallest size, a 2/3 ton model. In retrospect I regret the choice but I wanted to try this unit out and this was an opportunity. I like our Daikin Fits MUCH better at our Airbnbs nearby with lower loads.

I pulled the trigger on a Bosch system, and only afterward did I realize that Bosch isn’t a fully communicating system. I wish it could ramp up only enough to allow long 1-2 hour cycles. I’m also coming to the realization that my 2-ton Bosch BOVA 2.0 might be oversized for my 1,100 sq. ft. apartment. Perhaps I could lower the CFM for Stage 1 and Stage 2 redo the ducts in the attic??

Funny thing about the "Bosch" unit. Pioneer sold them as well but no longer does. In their docs, the 24-36 unit had the Mitsubishi compressor while the 48/60 unit uses GMCC. Was the DYC-2016 unit. However IMO you should try the MR Cool/Gree Flexx units. Their technology for doing low ambient heating from my understanding is not surpassed by anyone.

Nate - Have you tried adjusting the settings on the Bosch? I was under the impression that it has a strong/standard/economy setting on the outdoor condensing unit. Wondering if this would improve upon the ramp-ups that you pointed out.

do you have any Bosch cooling power useage video? How do you like the Bosch so far?

I like it quite a bit, nice product, not perfect, I'll do a review at some point. Only ran it for a few weeks in cooling, it pulls 600 watts on low cooling but 2100 on low in heating (set to 2 tons, not 3.) I like it in cooling better than heating, I wish it didn't ramp up so high on heating.

Sucks that it doesn't modulate well in heating mode. Or is that feature only available if you buy communicating controller?

Not possible with this product, it's not communicating. To get communicating equipment you generally have to go high end and get a manufacturer specific control.

Nate- can I ask how big is your house? And I assume both attic and basement are insulated. At 2kwh, 2 Tesla powerwalls (27kwh) should be able to back this up for 1/2 day? Is my back of the envelop calculations correct?

1150 square feet. 1500 cfm50 blower door. Uninsulated crawl, R-11 walls, R-30 attic. Fayetteville WV, climate zone 5 (almost 4). Your math sounds correct.

Nate - thanks for posting this video. Would you be willing to share your energy usage data from the Bosch system on an annual or monthly level to further educate folks about the return on investment / payback of these systems versus single stage equipment? I have a 10 SEER single stage, 3 ton AC with 60,000 BTU/hr furnace in a similar home and climate zone. I agree the newer systems are more efficient but from my perspective it is tough to justify upgrading an existing properly working system based on comfort level, energy and fuel costs compared to quoted install costs and payback on a newer system. For several years I have tracked my energy and heating/cooling runtime data using a similar energy monitor and an ecobee with beestat.io data and have my ROI upwards of 15-20 years based on current energy rates. I'm happy to share my data with you if you'd like to discuss further.

If you're doing anything with HVAC or insulation for payback reasons... don't do it. Our insulation and air sealing projects usually have 50-500 year paybacks. HVAC seldom pays back in the life of the equipment. The "payback" is comfort and a nicer place to live.

OTOH if you are ready to go carbon free, well, IMO, the easiest and cheapest replacement for you is a Mr cool universal system, IF you want a DIY system. I have to warn you, your 90s 10 SEER outdoor unit (let me guess, a rheem/ruud :) will never die. I've had one run without any refrigerant for days and they still keep going after repairing. Those were the last days of equipment that lasted. You can order from a dealer like I will, or Home Depot can ship them to their store for pickup. If you use their precharged line set they will honor the warranty.
