It has taken more than two decades for Michael Connelly's LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch to make it from the page to the screen. The character first appeared in the 1992 novel The Black Echo and since then, in a slew of bestselling books, has enamored readers across the globe. Those fans will soon be able to see that much-loved character embodied by Lost and The Good Wife star Titus Welliver in the Amazon Prime original Bosch. The show is being produced by Los Angeles-based Fabrik Entertainment, whose CEO, Henrik Bastin, has been working closely with Connelly to ensure that Bosch makes a faithful leap to a new medium. Red Arrow International is distributing the series across the globe, formally launching the show to the global market at MIPTV. World Screen caught up with Connelly and Welliver to discuss Bosch's journey to television.

Titus is sensational in this role. He plays the tough guy really well - but its the tender scenes with his daughter and ex-wife that really brings the character to life. Great show - and with so much great source material - long may it continue.

When I got an Amazon prime membership I kept seeing this "Bosch" show popping up as a suggestion. I wasn't really interested but finally gave it a try. I ended up binge watching through two seasons. After watching the first season I didn't think the second could possibly be as good but I was wrong. Now I can't wait to see the coming season and I'm reading the books as well. Really great show...couldn't recommend it more highly.

PDTALLMAN, pretty much the same for me. What was compelling about the first season (I haven't caught up with you yet) is how likeable a lot of characters are. I refer specifically to Bosch's ex and daughter and the lesbian lieutenant. Also, how Bosch responds to his Hollywood division coworkers. There is a warmth there that is missing in other cop dramas. I guess it makes Bosch's situation a lot less hopeless.

This is a fantastic show. It’s actually really annoying how the seasons are so short. Also how amazon puts all the episodes out at once. Because I’ll kill the whole season on a Sunday. And then have to wait a year for the next. But whatever. The show is amazing. The characters and the plots are amazing.

It is 2019 when I post this and I just finished watching season 5, which was again, fantastic! I am re-watching all the previous seasons and notice little things.......SPOILER ALERT if you haven't watched season 1 and season 2 stop here! . . . . . Ok in the first season, Mads is checking out Harry's house and finds spent rifle casings in a a mason jar on the counter. Then in season two, Harry is attending an Officer's funerals ( no names on who was killed) and Harry is seen picking up one of the spent rifle casings from the ground (rifle salute at funeral) and later puts the casing in the mason jar. Harry explains to Chief why he does it. It is the details that are great. It is the writing that is great. It is all the actors that are great. I look forward to season 6 of Bosch and the continuing adventures of "Crate and Barrel".

It took me about 3 episodes to really "get" Welliver as Bosch (I've read every Bosch book & had my "Bosch" locked in my head), but after 3 shows I realized what he was doing with the character & have been knocked out by Welliver --& the rest of the cast-- ever since through the 2 seasons. (I can't wait for recently announced 3rd season.) Now when I read Bosch I see Welliver in my head. All Bosch & Connelly fans owe Amazon a a huge thanks for letting Connelly, Overmeyer, Welliver & Co. do their thing. This show alone is worth my Amazon Prime subscription. It is the best "cop show" since NYPD Blue. "Bosch" is "Breaking Bad" good.

The LA vibe--that is another element that Bosch gets right. There are a couple of other writers who capture what LA is about, now and in the past, and it's not easy to do well. For a character like Bosch, you do not want a matinee idol, as they say. And the other characters need to have an edge to them, too. Hats off to the casting directors for nailing it.

I don't watch much TV. I really do not care for it at all. I am extremely difficult to please. I reckon I am a script writer's worst nightmare. If there is any detectible BS in the script, I'm outta there and usually don't come back. That said "Bosch" is a work which I can watch and enjoy. I don't reckon they could have found a better actor than Welliver to play the lead part. The first time I ever saw Welliver was in some Comcast commercials. I said then "This guy needs to do more than commercials. He needs his own dramatic TV series or series of movies." I hope he's happy being Harry Bosch, because he's dong a great job of it. The story writing needs to be praised as well for being both gritty and believable. Michael Connelly has done himself proud with his creation of Harry Bosch. If you have managed to read this without having seen the work, then you need to find it and watch a few episodes. While it won't appeal to everyone - nothing ever does - it will hold your interest if you enjoy slightly dark, true-to-life crime drama type productions.

Years ago, and in support of one of the novels, someone in the production chain had a video preview of the new Harry Bosch book. Harry was investigating a homicide and was looking inside a garage at a car. I thought to myself, Oh no... Please don’t have this actor play Detective Harry Bosch. This was not the character that I saw in my minds eye as I read the novels. Having read all of the novels I absolutely knew what Harry looked like and how he moved about. The actor in the video preview was not the Harry Bosch that I knew. However, the instant that I saw Titus Welliver portray Harry Bosch it was like my mind’s eye vision literally jumped out and onto the screen. Thank you Michael for writing real stories of police work, the way you you bring these novels to life. I found Bosch/Connolly about twelve years ago while vacationing on the Pacific Coast. In a second-hand store, my wife’s son pointed me to “Trunk Music” as a “great read”. He was so right. I devoured the book, tracked down every other existing one, then waited for each new one to come out in late Octobers. In some ways the show is even more compelling than the books for me, because the casting & production is so great… almost like Hieronymus Bosch was in control of his own story. Welliver “is” Harry Bosch, and the supporting cast is of equal brilliance. Grace Billets, Crate and Barrel, Maddie, Eleanor, Irvin & especially J. Edgar are richly depicted, drawn out & real. And on and on. The casting, production & performance is top notch. My wife has often mentioned how great the soundtrack is. Every detail has been nailed down perfectly. Even the intro is hard to skip. We just finished season 6; I’m crossing my fingers that LT Pounds gets his just deserts as he did in the books… Now I need to reread the books, since I’ve spent so much time “with” the characters. Now Legacy is available; I hope for even more. Thank you Michael Connolly & everyone involved with this wonderful project!

I agree with all of the accolades that Bosch has gotten and earned. However, I want to add an observation that I do not see mentioned that is important to me: values. The fact that the main character--despite his traumatic and dysfunctional growing up--doggedly continues to stand for something that transcends the normal metrics of "success" appeals to me, greatly. He is a moral person. He observes an undeniable restraint "not to cross the line." Yes, he's tough, profane, creative in his tradecraft, and he is hard to warm up too. But he is twice as hard on himself as he is on anyone else. He also has a tender spot for the outcast and the downcast. While the bond with Coltrane was born of wile and pragmatism, his love for the one who saved his life when he was furthest out on a limb still resonates with me. His classic line upon surviving an ultra violent assassination attempt by rogue army special operators, "My dog ran off!" says it all. You know where he lives-- loyalty and empathy run deep with him.

As long as Michael Connelly has been writing Harry Bosch novels, I have been reading them ... all of them. It is always a mystery to me how a writer can avoid the tendency to freeze a character in time. Connelly has managed to avoid that in an eloquent manner. Life moves on ... Harry moves on, just like all of us. To me, Titus IS Harry. I cannot think of anyone who could better handle the complexities of being Harry. I will miss the Amazon series. Hopefully, the series will be around when ever I need dose. Good luck to you, Michael as you move forward. I am glad to hear you say that you plan to keep on writing. Go Gators!!! The book character seems a little more hell-bent on showing up "the suits", though the screen Harry certainly doesn't endear himself to them much either. He has the Vietnam era vet era thing down pat... and it informs where Harry's drive to seek justice and bring order to chaos comes from. I always end up binge watch the latest group of new shows, and miss them when they're gone.

Michael Connelly has a major flaw - he doesn't write fast enough. I've read all his books and pre-ordered his next one but I read a book a day (all genres fiction and non-fiction). I read some of the Connelly books again but I'm frustrated. Connelly is the best writer of the genre - by far. He doesn't seem to know how to write a dull or boring book.

I had read all of the books before seeing any of the shows. I LOVE Titus as Harry. I envisioned him physically a little bigger, but he really gets the character as Michael wrote him. Keep em coming!!

Harry is not a big man. You may recall he was a tunnel rat in VietNam and those fellows had to be able to crawl through those tunnels dug in the jungle. Scary as hell.

Titus's soulful yet subtle performance is right on the money, I think a lot of it comes down to the deep timber of his voice. The nostalgic part of me wished that he had the same dark eyes as Bosch in the novels but good call on not giving him a mustache.

@CrabJock 9 жыл бұрын
Angela Chan I agree about his performance. He's walking a thin line between subtle and monotone. A person not familiar with the character could perceive him as boring, and that's the challenge really, since Bosch's personality sort of lands on that line. It's about why he's so tragic and quite. Welliver does a great job of keeping him on track, and allowing the context to clarify why Bosch is this way.

Do not plan on doing anything else when watching BOSCH, it keeps you glued to the set and watching more than a couple episodes. I watched all in one week.. I've read almost all of Connelly's books and Titus is exactly what I pictured as the character. Fell in love with his mannerisms and character early in the series. Wanting more very soon....WHEN?

When reading the Bosch books, you get a figure in your head who Harry is. With Connelly getting the rights back was monumental, Harry stayed to the books. In watching season 1 the thought to me was will the actor 'be' Harry. Titus nailed it in every emotion conveyed.

The series is amazing. It doesn't read like fiction, as so many cop shows do, yet it's very far from being exaggerated gutter-dwelling so-called realism. Paramhansa Yogananda called LA the "Benares of America." And that's important to the series, too - I particularly love that Bosch feels like the city of hope that LA still is. These clips are so valuable for us Bosch fans - they show us how the many parts came together so splendidly from the perfect casting to the wonderful sound design (I don't think that's mentioned, but it ought to be). Bosch is high art within the world of cop shows, though it really can't be confined by the images that the term evokes.

Cannot remember why and how I read the first Harry Bosch, but got hooked, and have read all the books and seen all the episodes thru 4, with 5 next and heard that season 6 is in the books. As a Los Angeles resident for 50 plus years, one of the highlights of Bosch books is the true locations throughout LA, I find my self following a map! Met Titus last week at TalkLA at the New Roads School with Michael Connelly and spent at least a half hour with Titus and a couple of fans, chatting about various subjects, he was very open and generous with his time, and looking forward to many series.

I've just finished watching Season Six, and Bosch has continued to be the best show on television. As a retired cop, who led a homicide unit for a fairly major agency, my standards are pretty high for authenticity. Michael Connelly's novels are the best of the genre, and they've provided the superb foundation of this series. And yep, Titus Welliver IS Harry Bosch. Well done, everyone!

…Could’nt be a better real Life Harry Bosch than Titus, ÉVER. And to be blessed to work in such close, nearly ‘insinctive’ guiding proximity with Michael, must surely be the greatest career joie one can dream of?! Hope for?! So, this interview, it contributes lavishly to the kind of distinct narrative, description of giving Harry the unique gravitas that he’s got, that he lives by, works with, those qualities which magnetize us all to Michael’s books (Now with René Ballard coming into play, as well, even bétter, even móre, AND also so with Harry’s great daughter character, the Actress in particular (her name escapes one for the mo, sorry)), and Harry himself, in particular… So, what does one say? • Michael gets it right, distinctively, the way he explores, interprets, portrays, gathers and creates ingenious angles and dynamics which seek the sharpest of talent to ‘figure out’, ‘unravel’…; • Titus brings Harry to Life in a real time kind of stylish, reserved and Professionally groomed fashion, which one hopes ‘would live on foréver’…! Kind of thing. See? (In ‘The Drop’, the other day, i again read about Harry and Hanna, and i SO wished that relationship could’ve been developed further…) So, what i’m saying AND trying to emphasize, is: the dynamics of this show is not only precious, it is leading in the most exemplary and joy giving, sharing way, imaginable. For THÁT i wish to applaud you guyz both, awa the rest of your Cast, Crew and Team (including your marketing Lady, who fastidiously and capitivatingly keeps the World primed on your work Michael!) WELL DONE you Guyz. Complimént. And a sincere THANK YOU,for, simply? ‘Getting it just dead right’ with most extraordinary and richly gifted applomb. •• Beste ex ZA’s Fairest Cape Winelands, where the Good Hope of our World originates, has its crystal clear freshwater fountain thereto. Hollywood is always mucking things up when it comes to famous book characters. Examples being: Tom Cruise as Reacher. This was such a miscast that people, myself included, turned against Lee Child. Another series of books is Andrew Vachss' (R.I.P.), character Burke, which would have been sensational but he would not sell out. Finally, Hollywood got it right by casting Alan Ritchson as Reacher but I still would never spend another penny on Child's books because of his betrayal. It was an insult to his readers.

I wasn't 100% convinced about the casting of Harry Bosch as I thought he was supposed to have curly hair and a moustache, but Titus Welliver is excellent in the role and I really love his voice. I imagine him with slighter longer curly dark/greying hair. I am really enjoying the series and have binge watched all the episodes in the last couple of days and cannot wait for the next series. I've read all Michael Connelly's books apart from the last couple and Bosch is my favourite character, so I was worried that watching this would spoil what I had imagined all the characters to look like. One thing though is that Irvin Irving is white is the books so that has really thrown me. I prefer it when they stick to the characters descriptions. They changed a lot about the characters and cut lots of the story in The Bone Collector by Jeffery Deaver and it just ruined it for me, having read the book. They changed the nationality and even the sex of some of the characters. I find it hard to believe the authors would allow these changes.

+Suziesational I love how they underhandedly addressed the "mustache" in Season 2. I don't think they could have done a better job saying, "Yes, he had a mustache in the books, but it just doesn't fit on this show and this is how we are closing that subject of aesthetic controversy with humor and effect...".
