BOSE 601 SERIES 3 TEST

Generally not a fan of Bose speakers but this 601 series iii model is an exception. We still have these in our 7.2.6 system now being used as rear surrounds. The reflection tweeters are amazing in that role. Thanks for posting.

Talk about timing. I bought my 601 series iii back in the 80's. Fast forward to today and was searching for reviews and found this video and your reply. I have mine as rear surrounds as well. My set up is 65" Sony 4k tv, B&W 704's as main with a B&W center, and Bose cubes as front surround. A HSU subwoofer, and Klipsch RP 502s series ii as the rear side surrounds. Thank you OP for this sound test.

@@chiefrushhh It's actually well balanced with the two subwoofers handling the frequencies below 80hz and the 7 bed layer speakers and 6 height speakers handling frequencies above 80hz.

I’ve had many high end speakers but nothing rivals the 601 series 3s They are amazing speakers you have to hear to believe, last word in precision No! But they can pack a punch and play so smooth..Speakers just to sit back and listen to..They are awesome!

@@richardrodricks707 they feel they're overpriced and only sell well because of marketing. Also because the speakers cones aren't made out of exotic materials such as kevlar, aluminum, berylium for the tweeters, etc. I have a pair of 901 series vi and they sound fantastic.

I have heard the 601’s and my friend has a pair. They are okay. I’m not an audiophile by any means either, but my JBL L5’s blows these out of the water. I even brought mine to my friends place to a and b with the two and even he agrees. My friend likes it for the nostalgia like the older series and the fact it was his dream speaker back in the days. But he does admit there are better speakers for the price than the 601 even me as a non audiophile person would say these Bose 601’s are not worth the price.

@@christopherdeguzman1137 that’s fair enough but did you drive them with enough power? They have fantastic slam and tuneful bass and just so nice to listen to..There are better sounding but for the time these are pretty incredible! Like I say not the best but very smooth and listenable.

@@christopherdeguzman1137 When you compared the speakers, did you use a decibel meter to set the volume level to be the same for each speaker? If not, then this is not really a fair comparison. When speakers have different sensitivity ratings, the one with the higher sensitivity will sound louder at the same volume setting. The louder speaker is often falsely perceived as being better. The only fair way to compare is to use a decibel meter to set the volume level to be the same for each speaker. Then you are comparing sound quality and not loudness. I have Bose 601 series II and III. I also have JBL L112's and L150A's. They all sound incredibly good. The 150A's have slightly deeper bass, as they should, because of their size, but they certainly don't "blow them out of the water" when it comes to sound quality. Of course when it comes to sound, it's all about personal choice.

Damn. My wife purchased these brand new in 1986 or 1987 for my Christmas present. I had them hooked up to an SAE amp and SAE preamp, which I still own. I sold the Bose and purchased a pair of Von Schweikert VR series speakers. Night and day.

@@QAudio I had to get rid of my high-end system due to cancer. It was a beautiful sounding rig. I kept some pieces that were around, like Parasound HCA 2003, which is a beast, Emotiva preamp, Velodyne SLP 1000 watt sub, and I just ordered Kef ls50 Meta which will arrive Tuesday to replace Kef Q350. I’m not much into the Q.

I found those for $50. The seller list that 1 speaker is not working. After I went home and checked it out. I replaced 1 of the components in the crossover, and they are working again. But the woofer is not working, so i purchased one for $40. The total I spent on them is $100.

Bose 301 with extra woofer and two more tweeters . I sold them back in the days . They were alright . I bought JBL LX44 instead .

@@QAudio Yes. I lost the pair I had for years after I moved . Then I found a pair of LX500 for $100 in great shape. Just a little different . Black instead of walnut and the tweeters have the arc . Almost the same speakers really. They sound great . I have Fluance and DCM too. The LX500 easily blow them away .

Tech finally called and my Bose 601 iii speakers, Sansui receiver and amp, and Sony R2R are ready for pickup. The 601s checked out fine with no repair required. Looking forward to setting the system up. In the mean time, I picked up some inexpensive Bose 501 iv speakers. The 601s sounds great. Would you dare combine them with the 501s or just have the 601s by themselves? Thanks

If you're asking about that component above the equalizer, that's not for reverb. It is a Pioneer Dynamic Range Expander. Those units were phenomenal in making speakers sound more dynamic. They worked beautifully with the 601s. I know from experience with this set-up. Fabulous sound and song selection. I wish Bose would wake up and reintroduce these again. I actually thought of the WLM speaker company using the 601 concept as they make great speakers using paper cone tweeters.
