Huge size difference. The bose max has better sound overall. Ive heard all these in person and its sounds alot different than through headphones. The sony is trash, loud boomy and unenjoyable to listen to. The JBL boombox is great but way huge compared to the MAX. Not comparable. Bose MAX is their best release as far as portable speaker, just not a budget friendly price. Gotta hear it in person . Its great. Very impressive sound for the size. Its only overpriced if u cant afford it. The JBL boombox blows it away but come on, its way bigger and heavier

yea in person the Bose is by far the best. It gets plenty loud, and no distortion. These online comparisons don't do it justice. But yes it does lack input. It's by far the best bluetooth speaker, big enough for sound, small enough to where it's not burdensome, plenty of bass and clarity.

I have the boom box 3 WiFi and the Bose sound link max and I have to say that the sound quality of the Bose is lot better than the boombox. But the sound of the boombox is laughter than the Bose. if I will have a party on my backyard I would use the boombox but for everything else (indoor/ beach/ travel ect the Bose is my must.

You can’t compare the Bose to either of those. Any Bluetooth speaker that is maxed out like the Bose will be compressed like hell and sound awful. The Bose has way too much bass with no EQ so to boost it further is criminal. The soundstage opens up beautifully on the Bose at around 35% volume and the bass wound down by 5 clicks. Also, I own the Boombox 3 and that speaker relies on proper placement. It can sound as flat as a pancake if not placed in a corner. Comparing the Bose to those two behemoths is like comparing a Kia Picanto driving at a top speed of 99mph to a Ferrari driving at 99mph. They’re both doing the same speed but are leagues apart.

I thought the compact speakers were meant to be COMPACT !!! JBL and Sony have to triple the size of the BOSE to get close to it and still, I'm sure the sound quality of the BOSE is better. I have the Soundlink Flex, which is superb for its size. But still, I am a person who prefers the sound quality over the loudness.

That comparison about an 18 wheeler vs an SUV strengthens the point that the bose is grossly overpriced. It has no place being similarly priced to these huge speakers that "can't fit in a backpack" It does nothing to justify that price. One 130 dollar soundcore boom 2 is neck and neck with the bose. Being able to buy 2 boom 2's and have them stereo paired for less than buying one Bose SL Max is just laughable. But we will buy them for the name and the high quality sound.

The fact that you would imply that only bose has "quality" sound says it all. The speaker is overpriced. You will see the price drop very soon. Probably to 300 which is more realistic.

For most speaker reviews like this, I get amazed by how _loud_ people want their speakers to be. Are people in general that poor of hearing? Indoors, I rarely have the Bose Soundlink Max above 40% volume and I don't think I've even tried it above 80% volume - it gets plenty loud already. Outdoors, you don't have walls to keep the sound in, obviously, but I've never been in an area where I can crank it up without disturbing people around me, so I still don't need more volume. Maybe someday I will, but not sure what situation that would be. It IS pricy though, but what you pay for is to have deeper base and good quality sound in a smaller package, while still having a pretty impressive soundstage for its size. If extreme volume is all you want, go for something bigger.

Honestly it's the same thing for my ult field 7 in my house it's loud as heck at 30 percent and I wouldn't dare put it above 45 if I'm not by myself. And at max it sounds better than my car. I often get closer to It's max volume at work though it's usually around 80 but that's because I'm walking around the place at work. But I can usually hear it everywhere

i had that bose soundlink max. At 40% i couldn’t hear much only around 60% volume i could start to hear something. At 80% is when it felt decently loud but wasn’t enough.

The size would be a issue for me. I travel a lot and stay in hotels so the Sony and JBL wouldn't work. Besides i won't be turning up the volume that much anyway. Right now i have the flex. It sounds good but it could use more bass. So ill be going with the Bose because it still sounds great and portability.

I have Bose products at home. I do wish multiple bose products can pair up together. But I bought it for the size, and the sound for the size i love and enjoy. I feel you are comparing 2 full size pickups vs 1 small compact pickup in performance. Now, if Bose had a speaker of that size, sure dollar pricepoint would surely go up, but the size of the bigger speakers SHOULD outweigh the Bose in bass performance i.e. However, good vid but unfair comparison. Sony and JBL speakers here are just too damn big. For the size of the Bose, it packs a punch and that is what i was looking for. $400, sure steep. But I use it daily and will get my money's worth. Over all, i am happy with the Bose and give 9 out of 10 stars fro the size, needs multiple pairing Bose speakers options for surround sound like other brands.

They can pair up together. Turn two speakers on and connect one to your device. Press the Bluetooth and volume up buttons on one speaker to put it into pairing mode, then the Bluetooth and volume down on the second speaker.

My Opinion: Ult 7: Very good, most close to the original song, JBL Boombox: not bad, but lacking a bit of bass and too much mid range in my opnion, Bose: Sounds BAD af for the price, sounds compressed and has most definately a compressor built in, very obvious in 9:55 while all the others play it seemingly easily

All I understood from this day of comparing Bose and JBL is that I will never buy JBL. SONY wins here because it's just another wight category. Why have you put the treble so high on the Bose? It completely kills the sound (I think you are a treble head) I have 2x Bose max speakers and they sound best on stock setting. The JBL is way too bright and artificial sounding. the Sony I don't have so cannot comment. Also, the Bose is not designed to compete with the other 2 and as such should not be played at 100% to compete, as the bass is dramatically compromised over 80% volume I like realistic sound. The kind which makes you feel as though you are there and can visualise the environment. Strangely, Bose devices can achieve this. JBL cannot and always sounds like speakers...

Heard both the Bose ans JBL Boombox 3. In my opinion the Boombox 3 absolutely pulled the pants down on the Bose. The Bose sounded flat as a pancake and didn't get that loud. The Boombox 3 got better the louder it got. JBL Boombox for me every time! Only the Bose fanboys would say anything different. Now if you want professional gear, i would avoid both 😂

I just looked up the specs and the Soundlink Max only has 460mAh battery. WTF? Even the much smaller JBL Charge 5 has a 7500 mAh battery. I was pretty keen on this speaker but that makes me pause. I have heard that it can drain in as little as 3 hours when cranking it

The specs show 4600 (not 460). Plus... you can not compare mAh between two products without ALSO considering the voltage. Total storage (watt hours) is a product of amp-hours and voltage. In other words, a single 100mAh battery at 6 volts has the SAME total energy storage as a single 50mAh battery at 12 volts. Looking at a recent teardown video here on KZbin, it seems the Max has 3 18650 cells in series. So 3.7v times 4600 is about 17 watt hours of actual capacity.

@ Thanks. Yeah 460 was clearly a typo. And yeah I realised the same thing when I dug into the specs. I assumed that they would be the same voltage but the Bose actually has a 10.8v battery so 4.6*10.8=49.68 Wh. The charge 5 only has a 3.6v battery so 7.5*3.6=27 Wh. So yeah, the Bose has a 1.84 times bigger battery. Not a lot bigger considering the size difference. I ended up getting the JBL Xtreme 4 after testing them side by side in the shop. The Bose has a lot of bass but lacks in treble and mids whereas the Xtreme 4 has a very well balanced sound and when you get the app with the EQ you can actually pump that bass up a bit from the default settings so it’s comparable in bass to the Bose. The Xtreme also has a 68Wh battery so that’s 1.369 times bigger than the Bose and the battery life is insane. Very happy with my decision.

Listen to all 3 at Best Buy today. JBL as usual feels like I'm getting stabbed in the ear with a fork, harsh and painful. Bose in real life has an excellent sweet sound with shocking good bass. The Sony hits the sweet spot of little to no harshness and great bass - as well as a far better EQ in the app than JBL's pitiful worthless 3 band EQ vs Sony's 7 band. Ult 7 hasn't quite the bass of the JBL, but the bass is great and it does have much of the sweetness of the Bose making it the best choice for me for my gym room/mechanic bay in my garage. All this talk about LOUD seems childish to me. LOUD has nothing to do with quality. Want loud... get JBL. Great bass but not at all musical and sound quality is unlistenable unless you get off on the feeling of glass chards shoved in your eardrums.

7:50 Eeeuuuuugh that sounds horrid! The vocals sound distorted AF. I listened to this speaker in the shop and I thought it sounded amazing but I was only turning it up to like 75% max. I almost never turn up speakers to 100% because they usually sound terrible, especially if they have volume dependant DSP.
