The bird sound is made using a glass slide. In the 70 the Confederate flag was a symbol of unity for the south. People of all colors flew it. Even as late as 2005 when my wife and me traveled the south we sold beaded jewelry. One thing we made were Confederate flag earrings. We sold as many to black women as white. Only a minority of people used it as a racist symbol. As far as Skynnyd goes I dont know of a racist song they ever did and their music is celebrated by people of all races. This can be seen by watching many of the people that play tributes to them. Truth is music is really colorless.

Southerners of all races still display the battle flag(square flag) or in this case the confederate navy jack(rectangular version that csa naval vessals flew). The use of this flag by racists is a blasphemy of its symbolism.

The left are assholes trying to destroy the country. The rebel flag is history, honour for those who gave thier lives for family and home. It doesn't mean slavery. Anyone who thinks that is a stupid democrat who is either brainwashed or just a good little sheep.

They were working class kids from Jacksonville, Fl. They 'took" their named from a gym teacher-ex-Marine at their high school (named Leonard Skinner) who told them to stop being hippies and cut their hair in the late 60s. The guitar player said "FU" to the teacher and quit school. They're now legends. That's awesome.

I can laugh about what the misconception of what that flag meant to me and my friends, nothing to do with skin color at all. One of my bandana shirts was that color, and if it was offensive, my boyfriend of color didn't mind it one bit. Yes, you kept the rattle on the snake - badge of courage. ❤❤

I'm so glad you feel that way about the Confederate flag. It's all about who's flying it and why. I was a teen when this was made and yup. I'm now old like all those in that video. I'm so happy to see you enjoy music I loved when I grew up. Case in point. Access to music was very limited back then. Like I owned the 8 track to this band. There was no internet with ITunes and such. There were record/tape stores and the radio. If you made it big it was Soul Train or American Bandstand. Like a different world. Peace and love to all and thank you again.

I never heard it referred to as the confederate flag, very often. This was Southern rock and I'm from the South. I saw them do this at Memorial (football) Stadium in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert. Oh, by the way, I saw Led Zeppelin in Raleigh in 1970and that was the best concert my 71 yo ass ever saw! I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions.

So many people associate the Confederate Flag with racism, yet it has nothing to do with racism. The Confederate Flag is about heritage and culture. Unfortunately, some of the people of that heritage and culture are racists. So when people see the Confederate Flag, they assume that the person with it is racist. The funny thing is, I have seen A LOT of black people with it. They have it because they understand that the flag itself is not a symbol of racism, it is a symbol of heritage and culture. Those are the educated people. The uneducated people are the ones who associate it with racism. I wish more people would learn about it, so they know what it actually represents ( it is not racism ).

Yeah, they are all grandmothers and great-grandmothers now...hell, if any of them already had kids, they could be great-great-grandmothers by now, or very soon if their kids and grandkids got busy at an early age.

The battle flag is pride for being Southern, it wasnt displayed to offend. 50 yrs ago divisions were not there like they are now. Afrucan Americans who have never been to Africa, display that flag and they have never and wull never set foot in that country. And white Americans arent offended by that. Our politicians want us divided.

The band in a documentary I watched claimed they weren't racist at all, but when they played England the English called them Yankees. And they took offense & said he'll no we're from the South. The record label MCA started putting the confederate flag everywhere, on the stage & album covers. In the 70's the confederate flag seemed to symbolize the South more than the out & out racism meaning of today. The Dukes of Hazzard tv show in the 70's & 80's, the Dodge charger in the show had a confederate flag on the roof, but the Duke boys seemed to be the only ones in the county that ever helped black people.

To many (southerners, westerners and northerners as well as outside the US) the confederate flag is a symbol of a person doing their own thing their way without the government saying do this or that. I fly a US and a Confederate battle flag in my yard, and yet I have many friends of various backgrounds and descents, all have put their hats in their hands and feet under my table.

I was at that show. Johnny Winter was the next band.. incredible show. Oakland Rocks. Back in the 70's the confederate flag was a symbol of limited government and personal freedom from government. It has been morphed over the last 40 years into what is today. California was all about as much freedom as possible back then. The rebel flag was everywhere. Boy has that shifted. Seems like California wants nothing to do with freedom anymore. Great reaction BTW. Hey just for you. I went to a Spinners and Temptations show a week later. Great show! Not a lot of palefaces there. Lol

Interesting trivia, this was the Rolling Stones stage. A facade of big lips and a tongue. They were told not to walk out on the tongue. It would make Mick Jagger mad. So what did these good ol boys do.

Yep. I heard Ronnie said, "Hell we would've moved the entire set up down on the tongue, but we couldn't fit the piano and a few other pieces of equipment". It was something along those lines..

No this was the Oakland Coliseum. The Stones show was in Knebworth, England. There was no better performance than the Knebworth show, they absolutely killed it. That's where Mick Jagger told Lynyrd Skynyrd to do whatever they wanted on stage except for going out on the tongue. Ronnie being Ronnie & told his guitarist to go play on the tongue. The rest is history

Loved your words on the confederate flag. While I am from the north and it has never meant anything to me, I was mad that people tried (successfully) cancelling the "Dukes of Hazzard" over it. There was nothing racist in that show, besides the lack of local diversity that should have been present, but that was the case in most of Hollywood shows at that point. If anything the Dukes of Hazzard may have done an above average (for the time) job of it. For the most part, black people seemed to be well presented when they were there, and were sometimes even the featured star of the week. Of course, overall the Dukes of Hazzard is not of any real importance, but it does suck that a bit of fun, harmless pop culture from that time got ripped away for no good reason.
