I sometimes forget how great an actor Jude Law is. In his early career he was getting a lot of talk about his stage performances which led to some scene stealing film roles. Now he’s a movie star doing action films, but early in his career he got as much early hype as Ben Whishaw did coming off of the Hamlet performance in London.
@SY-ok2dq2 жыл бұрын
Action films?? Jude Law is hardly known for being an action star. I think from early on, after coming to attention for his portrayal of Bosie, Law got tapped for all these roles playing colder, selfish, arrogant, upper class, snooty and bitchy, or villainous/killer types (like "Road to Perdition"). The role in "A.I." was a notable departure from those roles in that earlier part of his career. And from then on, he's usually played more sympathetic and also more vulnerable characters (e.g. "Closer") as well as your basic leading man ("Holiday" with Cameron Diaz) and roles like Dr. Watson. Recently he went back to playing villainous, scheming, selfish types with "The Young Pope."

Ok excuse my ignorance but why was Brokeback Mountain considered groundbreaking when we had films like Wilde and Maurice with full-on gay kissing? Or was it because BB Mountain was American?
@DiscoInfernal9992 жыл бұрын
My guess to why BBM was considered groundbreaking was because the characters weren’t portrayed as gay. Their sexuality wasn’t sexualized. Their sex scenes weren’t a huge spectacle. Maybe BBM didn’t have full-on “gay kissing” but it did have scenes of two people who loved each other. It was a simple love story about two people who happen to be gay and the struggles that came with it.
@toriartemis8012 жыл бұрын
I'd actually argue that it wasn't just the gayness itself - but the type of cultural background both characters had. As in, they were both rough, stoic, country boys from Wyoming/Texas. And that Ennis (Ledgers character) in particular embodied the American Cowboy archetype down to a T - an archetype that has been glorified for being super masculine, the ultimate manly man (at least in American cinema). I don't think that was something that was really explored before, at least in that specific cultural setting. So I mean, yes it partially has something to do with it being American, but not so much that it was an American film, but moreso that it depicted gay/bi men from *that* *particular* *region* of the U.S, and Jack and Ennis embodying that Texan/American Western culture while still being very much in a gay relationship with each other. I think that's why it was groundbreaking.
@GrumpyL52 жыл бұрын
BBM was also about ordinary working American men rather than "artists" or aristocrats (the usual suspects). Certainly not the first US film about gay men, but perhaps the first A list Box-office one?

just a marketing gimmick

The Special Edition DVD provides a great deal of backstory from the writers and directors. The producers indicated Jude added little touches and made the role a success and his own. One dimensional it was not. Stephen Fry mentioned during the more intimate scenes he was a bit uncomfortable (being gay) as he did not want Jude Law to feel uncomfortable or ill-at-ease. Imagine what was going through Stephen's mind as he was with one of the sexiest men at the time.

The story of Oscar Wilde, genius, poet, playwright and the First Modern Man. The self-realization of his homosexuality caused Wilde enormous torment as he juggled marriage, fatherhood and responsibility with his obsessive love for Lord Alfred Douglas, nicknamed Bosie. After legal action instigated by Bosie's father, the enraged Marquise of Queensberry, Wilde refused to flee the country and was sentenced to two years at hard labor by the courts of an intolerant Victorian society.
