Bill, you are a ... god, so glad you didn't give up, and Rune outstanding demonstration of the power of good security pins! We are so fortunate this didn't end up lost and collecting dust ... at the post office.

We write the 7 with a line through it specifically for this type of mistake. I think it was first used in the military (like a line through the 0 incase if it was written fast and looked like a 6 or something).

Bill- Hello from Falls Church! We have the same Post Office! How do you always know which pin you are touching? Is it just years of doing this, or are you looking at how far your pick is inserted into the keyway?

It took me about two weeks to get the hang of which pin I am om without having to count them from the back every single time.
@andrewdutchover10656 жыл бұрын
Can someone point me towards some material describing the jargon used? I work with locks a bit and understand mostly what's going on but I don't know what "fault set" or "counter rotation".
@andrewdutchover10656 жыл бұрын
Means
@pow_dunx6 жыл бұрын
False set means a pin or pins is hung up on the ledge of the cylinder, caused by the tension and picking of the pins. Counter-rotation is a feedback you feel when picking some types of security pins. When you have a false set and need to overcome a spool pin, the second wide span of the spool will push back against your tensioner making it feel like the lock is pushing back as you try to drive that pin upwards. The solution is to lighten the tension to reduce the binding on that security pin. Hope this helps.

Would a buzz gun or a snap gun work? Or is that cheating?
@andersjjensen7 жыл бұрын
7 pin locks are hard to snap or buzz to begin with. Add security pins and it gets harder.... especially with spools. Add different springs and/or a few steel driver pins (they have different weight) and it gets really really tough. Add T style keypins and you can be almost certain that it will be faster to single pin pick it... Which in this case took a heluva lot better picker than I 56 minutes....

@x40ozSkiLz6 жыл бұрын
Your panavice is awesome but you should think about the original vice every now and again. The lock moves a lot when you are picking, which would not happen when it is in a door. I believe that may hinder your feedback. Just a thought...

Or zeros with a slash through it so you know it is not the letter 'O'
@johnfrancisdoe15636 жыл бұрын
AngryHatter That's mostly a computer thing (IBM printouts for example). However in Norway where Rune is from there is a real letter Ø in their alphabet so the alternative computer convention of printing a dot in the middle of zeroes is preferable.

It's pronounced rooneh - in fact, rooneh is also a pretty bad pronunciation, but the proper pronunciation would be way too hard for non-Scandinavians :D.
@johnfrancisdoe15636 жыл бұрын
positronalpha Anyway, the name is the same as the name of our pre-christianity alphabet, so pronouncing the same is not that bad. Now the English worlds modern mispronunciation of king Knuth the great is quite the abomination, his name isn't spelled "Kanut" for a reason.

@positronalpha7 жыл бұрын
igor svakurac Where did you see Rune claim to be a master calligrapher? I see someone taking the time and money to send a good challenge lock to our favorite Bill, for our enjoyment. I do not see a reason to be a dick about his handwriting skills, just as there's no reason to be a dick about your typing skills. That the post office could not figure it out is worth criticism, though, since a big part of their job is figuring out where stuff is going.
