THIS!!!! Letting Sparrows handle this was a mistake. They are spending all their money on the tacticool instead of the business end. I can tell from the tip they have no idea what they are doing. Basically looks like he let teenagers loose with the CNC. If this was put in the hands of real toolmakers with production CNC experience the end results and price would be night and day.

Or maybe different colors so you can remember "okay green moved, now i'm trying yellow, hmm, back to green" something like that, I'm not recommending those specific colors, JUST an idea, which is some way to identify each line as a unique line, without being visually overwhelming. Maybe just alternate 2 or 3 colors? I don't have any idea. I thought about hash marks, but probably a bad idea. I don't know, just throwing out some ideas.

All of my thoughts have already been mentioned. Either by BB and LPL, or here in the comments. Slightly thinner tips. More visible marking for the disk spacing. Extra tips. Perhaps varying lengths as well. And a wide flat bar to zero disks. Overall 10/10 for a prototype, very minimal fine tuning before production is always expected.
@friartuck1035 жыл бұрын
Instead of red on the part where it translates the discs, I think it should probably be white in those lines. The red on black is making it hard for my eyes to see and I am only 29. Granted I do have Glaucoma though, so it would also help for people with disabilities. Good luck, and Sparrows, please send me one... jk, haha Great video as always Bill.

Hey Bill, I put this comment on LPL's video as well but I'll leave it here so hopefully you guys/Sparrows see it. Definitely hyped to see that they're following through on making it but also not gonna lie...yours looks WAY better and more professional. The black finish looks like its fading away fast and the knurling that they did instead makes it look like a toy. Definitely hope that the final product is more refined from Sparrows and that they have a silver option for it like yours as it looks way better. Maybe you could pass on the suggestion that they offer it in the silver as well as from reading the comments it seems like I'm far from the only one who thinks yours is more professional looking. @brianhignett89545 жыл бұрын
Better contrast between the tool color and the disc spacing marks would be an improvement I believe. Also Bill when rotating the discs, one direction will pull the disc away from the side bar - no gate will be felt, rotating it back pushes the disc towards the sidebar - gate can be felt. There is a certain amount of "slop" in the plastic disc housing, less in a metal housing. Same principle can apply when manipulating a safe combination lock. Regards, Brian.
@eak1255 жыл бұрын
I noticed that with the nose extended, you get very little tip left. Maybe an optional extra long tip wire so in case of that super deep set lock, you have the ability to get to the disks in the back. I also agree with others about the color choices for the lines. Sparrow's colors are red, black and grey/silver. Maybe go the with grey/silver for the line colors for added visibility. Other than that, it looks amazing.

Thank you BB, LPL and Sparrows👍 Can't wait to get my hands on one but the tip should be made from a solid single piece imo. Now onto designing a rear tensioning DD pick.
@LeCafeRacer5 жыл бұрын
As a machinist; single solid piece isn't feasible unless you want to pay $30+ a tip...You would have to take a 3/16" stainless rod and turn it down to be the wire diameter (thats even if you could turn something down to wire diameters without it flexing). Then take the entire piece and put it into a mill just to put flats on the tip. Most shops would avoid a project like that and flat out refuse the job even if you payed them well for it. Right now you just take wire and weld on a stamped sheet metal tip. Probably 1/50th the cost.
@KeylessEntry5 жыл бұрын
R. G. I'm not a machinist myself but yeah a good point otherwise it would get expensive very quickly. I have seen a fellow picker find a solid piece with the correct thickness of the stem and then silver solder a tip to modify one of those cheap Chinese DD picks, seems to hold up quite well. He used a metal rod from a plastic injection molding machine and is just the perfect thickness.

Congratulations Bill and LPL. It's fantastic to see your design already in the prototype stage by the ever industrious, Sparrows. 👏 I agree with the majority of the comments about the colour/contrast of the handle/markers. My idea would be to have thin silicone O-rings in the marker grooves. In my opinion, it would have a few advantages. 1) give visible and tactile indication of moving along the disk stack. 2) Act to cushion and centre the handle, making it less wobbly and remain in position if you let go of it. 3) The O-rings would decay and break over time, but I can't see replacements being a problem. 4) Finally, the rings could come in different colours, glow-in-the-dark, etc., allowing everyone to customise the markers as they please. 👍

Some ideas I had while watching this video: - Change the scale color from red to yellow - Add Numbers to the scale, maybe? - At minimum tip depth, the scale should max out. Might be doable with proper documentation on fixing the tip, maybe? - Random idea (might be nonsense): If the tip shaft is sqared at the other end in the handle, it won't rotate on high torque on the set screw, also the scale could then be "zeroed out" maybe, if that helps somehow.

Differently dimensioned/shaped noses to provide better seating for tensioning various lock profiles, depths, and/or configurations. Hexagonal/octagonal nose for adjustment of angle. Differently dimensioned/shaped tips. Wires with different thicknesses of tips. For thicker and thinner discs. Lightly serrated surfaces on the nose to provide better grip for tension. Lightly serrated tip to reduce slipping while manipulating the discs. More visible color scheme. Black red might be good enough for the folks in Sales, but if it's hard to see the index marks, it'll be hard to use. Integral disc reset tool.
