@craigbutler36274 жыл бұрын

@bojackhorseman53676 жыл бұрын
I have both and my take on the differences between them is this: The DS-1 has a much rawer character to the distortion, and more extreme filter sweep on the tone control, where it filters out extreme amounts of bass and pushes the treble to a ridiculous extent as you turn the tone up, making its usable range of adjustment fairly limited. but it preserves the dynamics and expressiveness of the guitar much better at lower gain settings than the DS-2. The DS-2 has a smoother 'texture' to the distortion, less extreme filtering that makes the tone control a bit easier to work with becasue it doesn't filter out quite so much low end as you turn it up - so you can still get an aggressive edge without hollowing out the low end. But it's also got a bit less definition overall, I find - It can be a bit 'soft focus' sounding with certain rigs. The midrange boost you get from "turbo" mode is VERY aggressive. Both are good at doing their own thing, with a certain amount of crossover where they can both do the same type of thing equally well depending on what you're trying to do with them. I find the DS-2 a lot more versatile, but there are certain characteristics of the DS-1's sound that I like better overall.

DS-2 is the absolutely different pedal. It has nothing similar to DS-1 except the name and look. It based on discrete transistor circuit, and DS-1 is based on transistor boosted IC. Different design approach.

Great video! I have both and both are great for different jobs. If you want your distortion coming from a pedal into a clean amp, I would go with the DS-2, plus you can switch between the two modes by connecting a latching footswitch into the 'remote' jack socket. Mode 1 is darker, perfect for rhythm, while mode 2 has more mids and an open sound that works great for leads. If you want to boost an overdriven amp, the DS1 is one of the best pedals out there!. Turn the distortion all the way down (still distorts nicely) and push the distorted amp's input with the level while adjusting the clarity/thickness you want with the tone control. It's my favourite booster pedal out there.
@pickleslz99198 жыл бұрын
I prefer ds-2, it feels like it becomes part of the tone in another way. With the ds-1 it's like a clean and a distortion at the same time

I like the DS-1 better for crunch rhythm i.e. low gain/distortion. That edgy breakup seems very like pre-amp valves starting to crunch to me. but the DS-2 better for higher distortion, it also seems to have a wider range of useable tones. How that would translate to different pickups and an amp with different mid characteristics I don't know.

DS-2 was my first distortion pedal. I boght it in the 90's and I used it for years. First off, I am a huge Boss pedal fan and user of their modulation pedals and their Overdrive units. I just placed my order for the new 40th Anniversary Boss DS-1 Distortion. I rely heavily on the Boss OD-3 Overdrive and I like the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive. I am watching and listening to You Tube clips to try and understand why my last experience with a DS-1 seemed too harsh and way to loud. Hopefully this will help me get a better tone from my new DS-1.

I got the 40th anniversary DS-1 as well. Just got a used American Strat made around 2004. It sounds incredible with the DS-1 played with a Peavey amp.
@duffman185 жыл бұрын
Remember if you're ever using any overdrive/distortion pedal with a solid state amp, to turn down the level on the pedal to almost zero then put the amp volume way up. Otherwise, the pedal will push the amp too hard and will make it distort, which unlike with tube amps is NOT a nice sound. Lots of people try DS-1's with SS amps and put the level on the pedal way up, and then wonder why it doesn't sound good

And i love my DS 1, Keeley mod....better than another...
@JohnMichaelBurns4 жыл бұрын
The DS1 featured a couple of crazy design decisions, namely a transistor boost section before the opamp that had way too much gain which meant that certain guitar signals would get this really squashed, shrill tone even at minimum gain. Then there was a tone stack which allowed you to balance between an unuseably dull sound and an unuseably shrill sound. With the DS2 it seems like Boss adjusted the values of those parts of the circuit to make a more useable, better sounding distortion. It turned out that a lot of musicians really liked the sound that arose from the "bad design" of the original DS1 and it continued to outsell the "better sounding" DS2. Setting 1 is just a modded DS1. You should be able to mod either pedal to sound like the other with a few cap and resistor subsitutions.

heres a trick for when using a ds-1; if you want a fuzzy tone crank up your distortion all the way up, then take down your tone to 9 o'clock or 9 and a half, and then adjust your volume according to what you want, this will give you a lot of sustain a because of how much you roll off your tone and how much gain you have; PLUS, this pedal tends to give you a lot of hum, so if you turn your gain all the way up you will get a lot of hum but the tone rolled down will tame everything down (DISCLAIMER: this setting is the one that i use for my affinity strat with single coils so if youre using a guitar with humbuckers you may need to take down the gain and bring up your tone a little bit :), you just need to tweak it until you find the sweetspot)

Janmeyjay Shukla switch to the neck pickup, turn the tone knobs on your guitar all the way, and turn the three first knobs on your pedal all the way (not sure about the last knob, you'll have to figure that out yourself, shouldn't be too hard). Could you not buy the pedal that bypasses the knob and allows you to switch it with your foot?
@Ston2477 жыл бұрын
No. There's something wrong with the internal circuit. If that's messed up, just throw it away. Or pay minimum $50 for repair. For that price I can get another pedal.

Better never use the external foot switch .change the modes with the knob and no faults could happen.

Not true. If something happens to the board it won't matter how you switch channels. So, I simply replaced this pedal with a better model.

I have never experienced a broken knob/switch on a Boss pedal in 30+ years... wierd

BOSS ST2 all the way.. I'm looking for a pedal to compliment my BD2. I was hoping DS2 would do it.. ST2 is what I want.

Boss ST2 is great on it's own, but doesn't stack well with other drives. That's not to say it's a bad pedal, I have one on my board now.

@@Frett3000 Mine sounds pretty great paired with a TS-9 or a Goudie FX TS-8 clone. I agree that it doesn’t stack well with other Boss drive pedals.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like turbo mode? I have a ds 2 but don’t use turbo mode anymore

Why does this DS-1 sound a million times better than my DS-1? Just a better amp, or has the pedal changed over time or something?

I use a laney TF 300

Almost certain it has mostly to do with the pickups in your guitar(s).

@@skald9 Fender Strat with lace sensors, Schecter with Seymour Duncan humbuckers, Jazzmaster with humbuckers, Fender Tele with single coils. Stock pickups except the Jazzmaster; Strat & Tele are USA made. All my other pedals sound great with any of these guitars. I don't like the DS-1 at all, and am thinking of trying modding it. But I like the sound so much more in this video. My amps are a Blackstar Club 40, and a '90s Fender Princeton Chorus. My DS-1 is pretty new, so I wondered if the older ones were better.

Nice vid and still relevant 5 years later. DS-2 > DS-1.
