What is it about middle managment that causes people to just...go crazy... I worked at a gas statuon and when I wanted off for a holiday and looked that all the days on the calender to take off were filled (meaning no vacay for me) I grumbled a little. Nothing much just the usual "oh dang. That sucks...I wanted to make plans." She goes "Well when youre a dedicated worker it doesnt matter! You need to be here!" And said this with such...toxic joy I didnt talk to her the rest of the day. A month later I hear her bemoaning she had to work extra hours because of various reasons. I looked at her with...a look. And SHE didnt talk to me the rest of the day THAT time.

It's not particularly hard to get into one of those positions so basically anyone who has a desire for power can get one. Obvious answer is a lot of people are assholes and lose empathy for others when they get some power. Another is a lot of people work basic low paying entry level jobs hoping one day they will be recognized for their efforts and get a promotion so they can finally relax a little. Sometimes they are im that higher position a little too long and forget what it is like to do the general sort of labor they used to, or they get frustrated that they thought they paid their dues and yet still are being treated like crap by people even higher up than them so they take it out on others.

Sadly, this sort of thing can happen when work and social life are blended. Over the years, I have mostly kept the two separate, but during one time period, I got into friendships with a few people at work, and when conflict developed within that friend group, it wasn't fun and it bled over into work. Getting into D&D or any other highly involved social activity with co-workers is risky, and with a supervisor or a subordinate, the risk goes way up. Combine that with some romance, and this horror story happens. Fortunately, it wasn't worse. The power-mad manager could have fired people rather than merely mess with the schedule.
@Leongon

It sounds like absolute madness to even consider including your boss in your hobbies, it always boils down to having to let the boss win at games, but it's understandable that in this case they were stuck into that situation unexpectedly with one colleague getting promoted after they already were gaming together. It takes really good friendships to have this situation without having the power imbalances of work mess with the shared hobbies.

13:51 I call it the KAREN theory. It would explain why so many people all of a sudden get extremely assholish when given the power. When a a certain individual gains a higher level (in rank or businesses) than the others, a seed of corruption is planted. it starts out small, having the Individual pulling rank to help their friends but then they start use it more for selfish reasons. Usually this seed would die if the individual has any amounts of compassion and humility but if not, it usually blooms into a flower of entitlement. They “believe” that they should have power over everything, even when it’s not even related to their job.

In hindsight, it seems like a red flag that she was initially willing to never schedule them on a Saturday so that they could always play. It shows a lack of professionalism, inability to separate work life from personal life, and willingness to use power for favoritism. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the work structure, but wouldn't that mean they had other coworkers that she didn't especially favorite because they weren't playing games together out side of work? And those coworkers would always have to work on Saturday because the boss wasn't willing to schedule her gaming buddies on Saturday?
@laurels4040
@laurels4040 2 жыл бұрын
yeah, exactly. I mean, I guess it depends on how the schedule in that business works (since clearly they're open weekends which is a time a lot of people don't want to work) but it seems pretty shitty that she changed the schedule to make sure they ALWAYS had saturday nights off. that's all kinds of yikes but I guess a little bit of power goes a long way for some people.

This one butthole kept taking and keeping magic items for himself, even when he couldn't use it, wouldn't even sell them either and hoarded it all for himself. So when we found another bag of holding on a long dead adventurer, we knew what he was gonna do. We backed up and let him snatch it up, he put it in his bag of holding. If you don't know what that does, basically it makes a black hole into another dimension for a few seconds, can't remember the specifics, but it's a bad dimension, you don't wanna go there. He got sucked in immediately, the bags destroyed, and then rage quit when he found out his character was gone for good. No way was he gonna survive long enough in there to find a way back. the only personal attachement i have in my D&D group is my character's pet baby dragon. we had a fight and since my pet dragon can grow in full adult size to do a one hit kill area attack, ofcourse me and the group needed to hide somewhere so we didn't get hit by it. since there was nowhere to hide one of us had a pocket dimention for us all to teleport to for a minute or two to then come back. when we got back, the boss we were fighting barely survived and had time to recover a bit since time runs different in the pocket dimention, but my little pet dragon was nowhere to be found. all that was left was his little hat that my DM randomly gifted him cus it was so cute on him that was hanging on one of the teeth of the boss.. acting like i wasn't that sad, i did made me blame myself for leaving my poor little pet dragon behind like that to be eaten. we all assumed he was dead... but then the DM pulled a stunt by leading the group into an area that had a cave where there were small sounds of movement and whaling coming from. curious we decided to investigate that sound and when we reached the rource, it was MY LITTLE PET DRAGON HUNGRY AND SCARED AND I LEGIT BROKE DOWN CRYING OOC WITH HOW HAPPY I WAS HE WAS STILL ALIVEEE

"Neither a lender nor a borrower be", goes the old English proverb, although it's probably a paraphrase of a Biblical Proverb given the whole anti-usury, anti-exploitation theme. I'm feeling like arranging shifts so they could play together was something she saw as a costly favour imposing a debt obligation on the DM and other players, that should therefore have allowed her to interfere in the story. CS Lewis said that the defining distinction of friendship is the absence of obligations, in The Four Loves. Any time you impose obligations, or assume others are obligated to you, or over-give, such as to create a debt, you damage the friendship, because friendship requires the absence of obligations. Obligations belong in other kinds of relationships, including work relationships, marriages and parenthood. So the confusion of the different kinds of relationship broke the friendship.

11:12 - CritCrab...NEVER underestimate the "power" that comes from combining RPGs, self-projection onto your player characters, and MINOR administrative authority in real life. A lot of people with low self-esteem gravitate towards RPGs because they really CAN help with those kinds of issues. HOWEVER, combine that with a degree of power and it can easily transform into a sense of entitlement. If that happens, slam it with all the severity of an Exterminatus straight out of Warhammer 40K; if left unresolved it CAN and WILL lead to all kinds of problems up to and including your entire player group being destroyed.

After a few Saturdays, I asked for a Saturday off and to my surprise the lead is more than happy to give it to me and knows just who to get to replace me for that day,I think how easy that was and that I shoulda asked sooner.well apperantly me taking the day off caused some drama between the friends and I'm back to working every Saturday and her friend that replaced me that day is back to every Saturday off again( favoritism?), fast forward a few weeks and the team lead is having a fight in her office with her boyfriend over the game they all been playing together for weeks now.which leads to management giving her a warning for causing a scene at the workplace. Some time has passed and the team lead has been removed do to her two friends turning on her and reporting her as toxic(guess having every Saturday off wasnt nice enough) and the strike she already had from that blow out in her office with the boyfriend. since her two friends transferred out of our team and scheduling has gone back to normal with everyone getting a fair shot at Saturday's off. TLDR: new team lead schedules friends off work every Saturday for a game they play together, they have a fight over the game and friends report her costing her the promotion. This is just my lil take on how the other co-workers might have seen it from the outside and in no way ment to be serious and again sry for my bad English and mistakes.

Dang, this is pretty good. It really shows how perspective can change depending on the information given, and how to someone who doesn't fully know what's going on, something that, with proper context, is perfectly reasonable becomes absolutely selfish.

I’ve worked in fast food for about 6 years and from what I’ve seen, the turnover rate for middle management is higher than the crew members, which is already pretty high. I’ve seen pretty cool people get promoted, and then go completely nuts and either quit or get themselves fired because they tried to assert more power than they thought they had.

I'm surprised the warlock wasn't fired tbh. She was clearly abusing her powers as a manager, even before getting petty. Then again not every company cares about maintaining a healthy culture at the office. Especially with large amounts of structure informing people that they are "more important" than other people by having strictly enforced hierarchies.

I've never seen a bad manager get fired unless they specifically insulted the top brass. I've seen whole teams making complaints about the same manager... and the company response was to just shuffle the teams around causing 5+ people to quit. Manager is still there, still has the highest worker attrition rate in the company.

I brought my manager intentionally into D&D at Taco Bell back in the day, and no drama occurred with him. Somebody lower on the team was a huge tool, but manager never used his power against the table, even when the other guy got really rude with his comments.

Jealousy and Envy: the enemies of a relationship. Folks, if you can't separate reality from fantasy and get pissy your SO's character is RPing romance, then you're not fit to be in a relationship. What makes this story worse was her going into the paladin's drive to access his files. It was obvious that while she "retired" her character, she was invested enough to stalk the team and attempt to ruin it because of a magical sword that dropped. End result: backfired so badly that it cost her a lot.

The item thing made me think of a player I knew. I was rolling a dwarf fighter and exploring a tower with 'fellow adventurers'. I found a gold ring and, being a dwarf, thought to just wear it because it's a precious metal and dwarves love gold. Turned out it was a cursed magic ring of wizardry and I couldn't take it off. When the character found out he went ballistic on me and chopped my character's finger off just to get the ring. =\ He was a 28 year old man IRL. xD

At least the ending was bittersweet. I'm just hoping she learns from her behavior so she can improve herself. Too many people are out there these days trying to abuse the smallest amount of power they can in order to make themselves feel powerful, it's always nice to see these kinds of people get cut down to size. The issue I have is that they never learn from it and instead blame others for their own actions.

And this is why I much prefer work now that I have a fixed schedule, every week, same time same days for the foreseeable future. It allows me to actually have a life and plan things and make actual promises outside of work. For those who can, request stable immutable schedule agreements in advance of any job you take. You'll thank me for it later.

I'm definitely not blaming anyone involved besides the manager, BUT Mixing work, D&D AND a romantic relationship together was bound to end up in problems. I mean, the Paladin clearly was messing with fire when he decided to get into a romantic relationship both IRL and In-Game with a work colleague that became his BOSS

I feel like it's more about inability to build healthy relationship than about using non-game methods to get game benefits. It just happened in d&d group because romance started in it. Arguably way worse, but it's not so absurd as messing with people irl for game advantage.

I have two of their smaller products (a mini dice spellbook and an even smaller keychain spellbook/mini dice set) and I adore them. In a game I was in recently we had a deck of cards (no not that one) a home brew one made by the dm, full of good, bad, evil, and fairly brilliant, loot, and whenever anyone would find a special treasure that wasn’t either basic loot or story important loot, we’d draw a card, and whatever the item was we’d get the equivalent. Wether we could use it, wether it would try to kill us, etc, was all based on luck. Not the greatest way of doing things. But it was hilarious raiding the kings treasure room while drunk irl and pulling as many cards as we could at the end game
