No matter what ME series from Boss you have, they all are great for the gigging musicians like us. I'm in a Classic Rock band and using manual mode and the simplicity of setting them up for gigging is so much easier than all the latest computerized guitar processors out there that are so dang hard to figure out and setup for gigging! I love my ol' ME50 that is still running strong for 20+ years, and I love my ME80 as well. They are the best tools for gigging, period!!!

I still have my ME50 as well and yes it's still going strong. My first multi-effect unit was the GT5 and it took me months to start gigging with it. Years later I found I was still learning it lol. I went back to pedals temporarily but the money hole is too deep and I'm going back to Boss and getting this unit. It's well worth it and once you set it you can forget it, other than tweaking for rooms now and then. I love Boss!

Thank you! I have the 80 and bought the 90 but sent it back as I felt that is was not much of an upgrade for the money. I love the ME80 and felt it sounded more natural. At the 13 min mark, where you play Sweet Home Alabama, you can hear how nasally the 90 sounds. The 90 has some nice upgrades like Bluetooth for backing tracks but as everyone can hear in this video the audio differences are minor.

Hello, thanks for the video. I just felt the ME 90 was starving for bass . Like the chorus of The Flame was very apparent. I just bought th ME 80 for $150 and its does many things well. I did get an IR 2 so I have the best amp response with the killer Boss COSM effects , very pleased. I can see going either way , and both units are fine. I will say if you know your way around EQ the IR 2 is great, I've played all 11 amp models and I am very satisfied. Your playing was entertaining to listen to, and a well done comparison. Thanks for the video!

My ME-90 was a little bit starved for bass too until I changed the output type in tone studio to the “katana 100W return” (not the 212, just the regular 100, and make sure you set it to “return”). The switch on the back has to be set to “amp” for this to work. For some odd reason that really brought it to life a lot more and made it sound more full.

I hope the ME 90 will not suffer the same defect as ME 70 and 80 where numbers on the display keep on changing. It prevents you from identifying the patch you are in and not allowing you to edit and save. This is a real deal breaker for Boss ME and GT series.

I've been researching all the multi effect units under $500 and after much head aching, especially over the IR-200/2, Ampero One and a few others, I started thinking the ME-80 appeals to me more than almost everything because of the knob based controls layout and familiar BOSS amp effects. I'm still on the fence about which unit is truly best for my needs (mainly home practice and stage performance at open mics) but the ME-80 probably does it all perfectly.

Thanks for your comment, Jessie! I hope you find the pedal that's best for you. I have used the ME80 for both recording and live shows since 2016. It's great for ideas in the studio because there are limited choices--and everything sounds inspiring. It's also great for live because there's no menu diving. The knobs are big and the lights are red so you can see them on a dark stage. The ME90 foolishly switched to green lights and, as my video shows, they are harder to see. Stay tuned for more guitar gear shootouts. Thanks for watching!!

Thanks for the video. Sounds like the 80 may have some more warmth at times but can also be confused as a little muddiness. The 90 seems (to MY ears) a little clarity, but could be mistaken for brightness. Individual adjustments might make them closer I guess. I do agree that the 90 has too much sizzle on the distortion. But I've come to understand that a better IR can sure that.

Thank you for the easy to follow sound comparison test. This is very useful, and the best video I’ve found on KZbin so far. I basically hear no quality improvement for most of the sounds. When you were doing the “Hysteria” test, I could hear some tonal differences, but I’m not sure if that’s because that the two units were set slightly different from each other, or if the effects have changed. If it’s the effects, I did think that the delay sounded slightly better on the ME-90. With the the clean and tweed amps, the 90 seemed to be a bit more upper mid focused, with slightly less bass, but maybe the eqs weren’t set exactly the same...it would be hard to dial the two units exactly the same with all the knobs. The combos definitely were different. The 90 seems to have much higher headroom, but the whole tone structure was different from the 80. I guess Boss completely revamped that amp model. Did you compare the other higher gain amps as well? I generally don’t use them on the 80, but I might if they sounded better on the 90. Also, beyond the boost and Tube Screamer, how do he other gains compare?
@briancoyne6700

Hi there! Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Yes, I felt the Me90's chorus and delay were more impressive than the ME80--but not much else was. I was looking for the right pedal to play live acoustic and occasional electric guitar with. For electric, I prefer the Fender clean sounds with light overdrive. True, I only tested the bost and the Tube screamer in the video. Off camera, I tested the other overdrives on the Me90 but I did not like them at all. I find them too "fizzy" and digital-sounding. But I feel that way about most digital distortions I hear. There weren't any comparison videos of these two boards that I could find so I made this video. I know it's not comprehensive. I was in a hurry to sell one of them because eI needed the money. I decided to sell the ME90. It sold very quick on Reverb. Thanks again for watching!

Hello, I am faced with a very difficult choice, I am a fan of the Kino Group, and I know for sure that the sound of the Boss ME-80 is ideal for me, this processor is very popular in the CIS and there are many settings for it, but I do not have the opportunity to buy it, or it will be very difficult and too expensive, I can only buy the Boss ME-90, but I'm not sure if it will suit me, since many people either complain about it, or on the contrary say that it is either the same or even better. Has the ME90 cab sim? like the ME80 trick or do I need to play ME90 + Real guitar amp?
@briancoyne6700
@briancoyne6700 9 ай бұрын
Hey, Yes, the ME90 has a cab sim switch on the back. You can turn it off if you want to play though a real amp--or turn it on and you get the speaker cab sim sound with the amp models to go into a pa or DI. With the ME80 you have to stick a 1/8" adapter in the headphone jack to engage the cab sims--so ME90 has improved that process for sure.
@Ilshat1991

@@briancoyne6700 switch on the back is not for disable the cab sim. It is for enable/disable the AIRD feature that is used for compensating the real amp and cabinet high frequencies cut off when you are playng through them (while cab sim remains enabled by default). The type of used amp (e.g. the level of compensation) can be configured by AIRD output setting in BOSS Tone Studio for ME-90. That's the question, Randy ;). For me, I decided to keep my ME80 and sell the 90 because all I need is to play acoustic live, with a looper and a few subtle effects (chorus, reverb, delay and wah.) For someone who's gonna play a lot of electric, I'd say the 90 has better amp modelers. The effects I mentioned are about the same to me. I think the wah pedal on the 90 is a downgrade. Hey, yes, definitely. I did that many times. A guy on a ME80 user group said it this way: "If you're going through front on the amp, then don't use the pre amp or cab sim dummy plug, as you'll be using the Amps pre amp for tone, not to say you can use it, but if you do, keep the channel as clean as possible. If you're going into the fx loop. Then you are by passing the amps pre amp and using the Amps power amp only, therefore use the me80 preamp and cab sim dummy plug, You can also plug guitar into front of amp then cable out to send fx then use both send and return fx to use the amps preamp and put your me80 in the loop so your time based fx come after the amps distortion in the chain. There is no right or wrong way, but these are some options that come up as a question all the time. Hope this helps anyone who doesn't know what an fx loop is for, or where and when to use it". Thanks for this. Do either one of these have a looper? Is there a sight to download preset settings?

I know the me 80 has like a phrase looper on it, but you only can record like I think 30 - 40 seconds on it. after looking at a picture the me90 has a phrase loop on it as well. but I don't think they have drums
@briancoyne6700
@briancoyne6700 10 ай бұрын
Hey Gary, yes, both have loopers. The ME80 erases the loop when you turn it off. The 90 remembers it--so you have to remember that it's still in there before you move on to another song. ; ) Not sure about press settings, Haven't gone to the website.

Boss Tone Studio/Tone Exchange has MANY presets, livesets, AND unlocks some other features and effects in the ME90 that aren't accessible on the board itself. ONLY Accessible in Boss Tone Studio. I have been using Tone Studio for years and use it EXCLUSIVELY to set up my ME80 and ME90

I just couldn’t believe they left that one simple reverb knob instead of having separate knobs for amount and decay. I like some nice ambient sounds so the 90 really fell short for me there.

I hear you. The 90 does have a an effects loop which is cool. Not sure if a reverb pedal would sound right in the loop or if it should be at the end.

I think you're right. I was hoping that the new amp sims would be closer to real amps--but to me, they were about the same. Good--but not better. Thanks for watching!

My apologies, Gaston. I have extremely flat feet so I have to wear these orthotic sandals. They are the only shoes I have found that my feet can tolerate. It was extremely painful for me to even make this video because I had to balance on one foot to push the buttons with the others. I might have to have feet reconstruction surgery this summer. If that fixes my flat feet I will then be able to wear nicer shoes for my videos. Thanks for your understanding.
