Boss OC-5 Octave Pedal | Demo + Review | Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Electric Violin, and Bass

Hey folks, welcome to my review of the brand new Boss OC-5 octave pedal! I'll be demo-ing it on electric guitar, acoustic guitar, electric violin, and bass; if you'd like to skip around there's timestamps below. Everything was recorded direct into my Scarlett 18i8 interface, except for the distortion guitar test which went direct from my Tech21 RK5 flyrig.
*I should note that the OC-5 did perform better in the violin-as-cello test in bass/vintage mode, though I lost the video somehow for that setting (oops...). The tracking was faster and more accurate, but the sound quality was pretty similar the video test above, so I'd still recommend against ditching your POG or Pitchfork for the OC-5 if you want that cello sound.

That was great! I built my whole style around the OC3, so this has to be better. In your next loop session, pop the OC5 after the looper so you can periodically "drop the bass" :-)

Thanks for uploading this, one of the few videos showing the OC-5 being used in poly mode with low note priority and strumming chords. This is how I would plan to use it to get a bass line for when I’m playing rhythm. I noticed in the video that it sounds like there’s a small amount of “glitching” when using it like this? Sounds like the bass note is fluctuating momentarily? Is this just the video or is it a little unstable when strumming and better suited to fingerpicking? Thanks.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, it's a bit of a mixed bag. If you don't mind the self promotion, I just posted a looping vid here where I use it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fInJf4mQg5WspZY I used fingerpicking to add a bass line in the verse, then used poly mode for the pre-chorus and chorus. As you can tell the tracking is definitely more glitchy with full strummed chords, and this is after a week of solid practicing to try and work around it. It has a tendency to get confused about which note is lowest and will sometimes waver and switch to the string above, or there'll be some noticeable latency. Open strings in particularly seem to be a struggle. If you really focus on emphasizing the bass when you're playing it works a bit better. Overall I'd say it's still considerably better than the OC-3, but not the home run I was hoping for. Hope that's helpful!

@@HarmonyWithHunter Yeah that’s really helpful thanks. I had (and sold) the Boss OC-3 as you had to really change your playing style to get that to work. Just checked out the video, enjoyed that thanks, I too was hoping that the OC-5 would be the home run pedal, no one seems to have really nailed this yet.

Have you tried TC Electronic Sub N Up? Which do you prefer Boss OC-5 or TC Electonic Sub N Up?

I have not! From the description though it sounds like the Sub N Up is a more dedicated "pure" octave pedal. The main reason I use the OC-5 is to be able to play chords and have only the lowest note sound an octave below to replace a bassline. I would guess the Sub N Up is better for straight up basslines, but I don't think it can do what the OC5 does

I have another review of the Bass9 on my channel exclusively for electric violin if you feel like checking it out! I think the Bass9 is a better fit w/electric violin, though the OC-5 is unique and super useful in a lot of situations
