@@steveturner6770 Some might think I have a tin ear but I’m just not that picky about constantly tweaking my tone. I’ve always been able to get usable tones from any gear I use, and somehow no matter what I play, I always sound like me. It’s so weird! 😜 If I sound bad, it’s usually because I am playing bad! I have always tried to make a point of not using gear as an ‘excuse’ for me lack of skills/practice. I have known more than a few people with thousands of dollars worth the very best gear you can get, yet they can’t play anything other than a few licks they copped. I never wanted to be “that” guy. Seeing countless numbers of beginners online complaining that the have the EXACT same gear as their guitar hero, but they still don’t sound like them also helped to clued me in. I want to be a good player. I don’t care if I don’t have the very best “collection” of gear. Depending on the situation I could play my Squier Tele plugged straight into my Peavey Bandit make it work. Though the OD-3 would come in handy there!

@@BrianGay57 you sound like what I'm like now. Foolishly in the past I've chased after that magic pedal/guitar/amp, wasting money basically looking for an elusive sound that would make me a better player. Nowadays I prefer just to plug into an amp, one or max two pedals. That's age talking!

@@steveturner6770 I've owned both. The OCD just wasn't right for me, although it did have all the grit and drive you could want. The OD-3 has stacked gain, this was very loud with my setup at the time, which was good as I was playing out. Notice the volume never got to even half in the video. No so with the OCD, even at 18v. Great comparison video man! Now, to be fair I think those pedals where not built to accomplish the exact same task. OD-3 is beautiful and it's perfect for a low gain sound. I’ve tried the v1.7 and v2 OCDs and they were always too muddy, noisy, and had a weird grainy texture to the note decay. I know tons of folks love them but I just couldn’t see it. The OD-3 on the other hand, I didn’t appreciate it a few years ago when I first tried one, but I gave it another chance (thanks to your videos) and I really love it. I agree. The OCD sounds muffled. In lower gain settings, it's ok. V1.1 to V1.3 OCD prices are insane. In 'hp' mode, it just gets worse. It sounds like there are several thick blankets covering the cab at higher gain settings, and the bass is ridiculously high. Mike Fuller is an outstanding designer, and I actually love the fact that he was abrupt and scathing with his customers. Customers can be utter imbeciles, and guitar players can be total snowflakes. Everyone deserves a good dragging, it's good for your character. I don't have much love for the OD-3 at higher gain. I'll take any OD-1 over the OCD/OD-3. I just think the OCD is like watching Star Trek, some people lap it up like a cult but the appeal of it just escapes me. It's bland.

I have a love/hate relationship with the OCD. It works great with some amps, but can be harsh in the high end. I actually much prefer the Electro-Harmonix OD Glove, which is derived from the OCD. The OD-3 in this comparison sounds smoother and more musical, to my ears.

Just a note, the OCD tone control only works as a ‘cut’, so that compression and muddies you noted might simply be because 12 o’clock on the Tone isn’t actually zero, it’s half rolled off. I think ;)
@stevenvandemsky72903 жыл бұрын
No, OCD and OD-3 both use a passive cut tone control, like most overdrives do.

@@stevenvandemsky7290 err, yes, exactly? So why run it at 12 o’clock and call it muddy?
@stevenvandemsky72903 жыл бұрын
@@sueandtimacousticduo5444 You‘ve got to keep things balanced with overdrive pedals on and off. Dial in a clean sound you like, then turn on the overdrive pedal and turn down the tone knob until the piercing treble is gone and you get a nice transition from clean (pedal off) to overdrive (pedal on). I always turn the tone knob on OCD and the OD-3 way below 12 o‘clock. The problem some may find with the OCD (depending on the version) is the bass content you can’t dial out, which makes it sound fat but a little muddy also. You just can’t compensate by turning up the tone knob

The OCD is a great pedal, and works well into a clean amp. It can be a bit dark/muddy with humbuckers (esp dark semi-hollow guitar) so I sometimes use a full/treble boost (DIY kit) into the OCD which cuts the huge bass that the OCD can put out. Just bought a TS mini which does similar but can add even more drive and grit 😂.

I have the od3 and sl drive. They're different and both great. The od3 is low to mid gain and amp like but it's not trying to recreate any specific tone. It's a relatively neutral overdrive that's very versatile. Whereas the sl drive is mid to high gain and is aiming for marshall tones from plexi to jcm800. It's a little less versatile but perfect for straight ahead rock, having that marshall upper mids bite and sizzle.

Hmm, I don't remember hearing as much difference in the low end between these two. Personally, if I was using these as a boost in front of an already distorted amp I'd probably go with the OD-3 because it's a little more mid focused or I'd go for an even more mid focused pedal like an SD-1 or Tubescreamer. I don't like to overload the low end too much when boosting an already driven amp as I find it gets too muddy...
