Boss RSD-10 + S2400 // Wild Glitchy Vintage Delay Effect Box & Crunchy Sampler

After searching for some of the wildest, glitchiest hardware effects boxes I could fine, I stumbled across the Boss RSD-10. This thing is vintage digital mayhem. What makes it unique is that it's terribly designed in the best way meaning it does all the things a typical delay unit... well... shouldn't. It frequently glitches out when switching modes. It saves "ghost" recordings in it's memory and replays them at random times, layered with the current original sound. It also has a "keyboard input" which allows you to plug a synthesizer into it and trigger back sampled recordings in different pitches, OR change the pitch tracking of the delayed signal playback. This of course leads to even more weirdness.
That being said, the Boss RSD-10 is highly usable and said to be many producer's secret weapon. In this video I'll show you various effects builds that quite often make their way into my songs using the various delay ranges and manually automating the feedback knob. Also, I frequently feed loops into it and play with the various parameters while recording in Ableton, capturing all those beautifully odd nuggets of gold that you can slice out and use for unique percussion bits in my music.
This particular unit requires a "wet mod" in order to get a 100% wet signal out of it. This was a daunting task at first because it does require you take the entire unit apart and de-solder and remove a capacitor, but fortunately I captured the entire process with photos and will be writing up a "How To" on my website which I'll link here soon.
These Boss effects units are now fairly rare, and while hard to find, can usually be had for a couple hundred dollars, so modifying them to become strange delay glitch machines isn't too nerve wracking- highly recommended in fact.

if i remember right you can use a momentary foot switch to trigger a recorded sample via the trigger(?) input on the back. not a lot of memory so short sample, but still useful for keyboard and guitar players for little stings and hits of noise.

Nice to see some more videos on this underrated box. I have the RPS-10 and RSD-10, They're definitely the ones to get from the Boss half-rack line, as they're the only ones that have the pitch / gate inputs. The RSD-10 sampler is triggered by CV trigger signals, so any synth / sequencer with CV can trigger the sampler to record / play. I had a drum machine playing through the RSD-10, with my Keystep playing a rhythm into the RSD-10 trigger input to create offbeat stutters. Mode B on the sampler knob essentially allows you to record + overdub, so I tend to use that the most.

They’re truly incredible boxes! I get such rad, weird sounds out of them that are highly useable (which is what I care about honestly). They actually take ANY audio signal in their keyboard input that’s 1/4”- doesn’t have to be Control Voltage, but essentially the same thing. Thanks for pointing out the overdub feature- I’m still leaning this thing and the manual is cryptic! 😅🙌🏼

The Pitch input does take note signals, but there’s also a Trigger input, which - I found - requires actual CV for it to work. I tried audio signals from a keyboard and it didn’t seem to trigger or capture anything. But, these things are amazing. I’d like to find a rack fitting so I can rack mount these.

@@easytoassemble54321 oh you’re right! I was looking at my RPS-10. The RSD-10 does have a trigger input- super cool. Yeah I’m trying to find a 2U rack for mine as well. If ya find anything let me know!

@@ScottBrio you can get rack trays with an array of holes and cutouts on the bottom, or just drill your own, then it’s just a matter of finding the right screws for the mount points on the base

You can open another side of this box if you connect y - cable to it. Or you can create another track with notes to connect keyboard input. Good video! Good luck with experiment!

Crazy! Can you expand a bit? Plug a Y cable into what? I had the keyboard input connected to Ableton which was being triggered by Ableton and my Push 2. Glad you enjoyed the video!

They’re both great. Different flavors of delay. The RSD-10 is definitely weirder/glitchier than the RPS-10. I have both. I’ve been meaning to do a video on the RPS-10 as well.
