In the 60s we did use guitar amps 2nd channel for microphones. Not the best tone for vocals, too muddy. Acoustic guitar pickups were rare and proper sound was difficult. Bar bands had few PA options available. The good side is, less gear to carry.

Hi Deb. Great video, again! I have a Fender Acoustasonic 90w amp, which I sometimes use for solo work. Are you familiar with the Acoustasonic amps? It has one channel for guitar and another channel for my mic. I like the simplicity of it. I’m not sure I can actually turn FX off on the amp, just select different settings and turn the FX right down if needed. I dug my VE8 out of moth balls today (been playing in a rock band with PA) to see what I can do with it. I ran the guitar from the left channel of the VE8 with 1/4 inch and the mic from the right channel with XLR and set the option to use the reverb of the “pa” (Acoustasonic), not the VE8. Is this the right way to do it? I also have a FS6 footswitch to use with the loop function but I’m not sure I’ve got it right yet. I’d like to loop the guitar so I can play a solo on something simple like Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door or All Along The Watchtower. Appreciate any pointers. Thanks, Baz

You can use either 1/4” or XLR. I didn’t notice a difference when using 2 XLR or 2 1/4”.

GriffinGTR I always like to hook up 1/4” for guitar, Xlr for voice. So you would run the XLR left output on VE-8, Hi set to 8 vocal mono output, then the 1/4” left output Li set to 9 guitar mono. You can see the setup I use on page 5 of you Ve-8 manual. Plug the XLR from VE8 to XLR on the Cube and 1/4” from VE8 to 1/4” on the Cube. BE SURE ALL EFFECTS ON THE BOSS ARE OFF. I have found using effects on speakers, mixer, etc with the VE-8 sounds pretty bad. Sometimes you can set it up, delicately add effects to see what you can get away with. I always just turn off effects for anything I’m using the VE-8 with.

@@GtrMan863 I just take the stereo Line out from the VE-8 straight in to the Line in on The Street Cube EX. You can then also use the other imputs for other instruments.

You have to use a mixer or it won’t work. Depending on your amp the sound should be useable. NEVER PLUG MIC DIRECTLY INTO GUITAR AMP that doesn’t have XLR inputs. THE MIXER OR BOSS VE8 is the key to this Working. AND NEVER STAND IN FRONT OF A SPEAKER WITH YOUR MIC. Depending on your mic it will pickup the signal from the speaker and cause feed back. This is always a problem but more so with speakers no designed for the XLR input. Plug in your VE-8 and that should help quite a bit. Just move a few feet away from the speaker and to the side if feed back continues. You can use a 1/4 TRS/stereo plug in and use the left channel of the VE-8 (as this is the mono)to plug the other end into then plug in mic, walk around to see where the feed back stops. I started a video on TAMING FEEDBACK and I'll get it posted Thursday for you. It will show you what causes it and how to stop it. With the Stand alone ACTIVE speakers you wont have as much of a problem with feed back.

Yeah, I have had my fair share of eliminating feedback, especially in small, crowded places where they put you into a small corner with all your stuff. Looking forward to your "feedback special" next week. So, if I understand you correctly, a guitar amp could work but only if you put a mixer between the BOSS VE 8 and the amp? Excellent. Phil May yes. Use the mixer for your vocal and guitar then use the headphone output to the amp. Try different setups. You may have to turn the amp EQ and Effects off. Get everything working then play with the sound to see what you can get. The amp may not work but it’s worth a shot. The better amps will work.

Great instructional video. Very informative. Been thinking about purchasing the boss ve-8 to replace several pedals I have. In your opinion do you think it's worth the money?

Craig Brownley it is definitely worthwhile to a solo artist. You have to be pretty spot on with your singing for it to work properly and it bases the harmonies from guitar chords your playing. You can set it to the key as well, but i get better results with the key turned off. I’m working on a video know going through the different outputs and how they sound and trying to record with it. It is definitely not something your going to want to use for recording. The harmonies don’t record well. I have gotten much better results recording straight out from the mixer Or speaker outputs. It is great for solo performing, just playing. Even just the wow factor of having harmonies with a solo act. I really enjoy playing with it and it is definitely worth the money. The effects for guitar are minimal. Wouldn’t buy it for guitar effects though. The effects will round out a nice sound just nothing excessive. Kind of like a mild chorus, reverb with a DI box. The reverb is the strongest. The recorded sound is slightly mechanical but is less noticeable through a P.A. I’ve used a Telecaster with it with good results. Try the headphone output of the Ve8 into your phone input. You really should use a usb mixer to get the ve8 to your phone.

Have you ever had any feedback problem while using Acoustic Resonator/ Enhance when you're plugged to a Powered Speaker ? A friend of mine just told me not to use this 2 features while playing close to the PA (in a Pub , for example).

You have to take care with mic and pickup positions with any speaker as you could get feed back from any input that is lined up with pickups or microphones. I haven’t had any more or less trouble with the Ve-8 as I’ve had with any other mixer/PA system. The VE-8 can be used as a mixer and I’ve always found it to do the job. I haven’t experienced any problems and I’be been using for a few years no.

Hey Deb, thanks for how well you explain and demo this fun machine. I was wondering if you may be able to help me find a way to control the volume levels of my individually saved patches. When I switch from a radio effect patch to a harmony patch od distortion they are considerably louder. So it’ becomes difficult to use several patches in one song.

If I go from the VE 8 LINE OUT to the LINE IN INSTR on my Focusrite Scarlet 2i2 Audio Interface and the XLR OUT to the XLR IN mic will the guitar and video come into my DAW on the computer as 2 separate tracks? I watched a previous video of yours that showed plugging the VE 8 directly into the computer using the USB and everything went in as one track. Just thought since I already own the 2i2 maybe this would allow me to record guitar and vocals on separate tracks. Thanks.

you can record sounds via looper but when the loop is turned it is gone. you can save settings and setup but no memory for sounds or loops. you can hook the VE-8 up to your computer.
