It actually has an explanation, as Theseus was depicted an old man, and spartans thought that old men were honorable due to them living through enough battles to age up to that point. Thus Kratos offered him to live, and then accepted his duel when requested.

This is a good observation, and what few Kratos fans understand and often mistake for Kratos "not wanting to fight", is that Kratos is not wasteful. He will not pick a fight that doesn't need to happen. He doesn't brutalize foes when intimidation will suffice. He gives Hercules a chance to walk away because he had nothing to gain from Hercules death. He could care less. But don't mistake that for mercy or lack of desire to fight.

I suppose we're meant to hate them. Most of the characters in Greek mythology were, for lack of better words, massive dickheads. Even the so called "heroes" like Theseus here. After he killed the Minotaur, Ariadne - King Minos' daughter, I believe - helped him escape from the Labyrinth with a thread of silk. And how did he repay her act of kindness? By leaving her stranded on Crete (the island where the Minotaur was from). Not only that, but he led his father to believe he was dead, so in his grief, his father killed himself. He did get some kind of comeuppance in a sick way, though. He thought he got his happily ever after, by settling down and having a few sons (I think), but it turned out his wife was batshit bonkers and she eventually murdered their kids and tried to kill Theseus too, but he killed her in self defense (IIRC)

They have a child named Hippolytus who oddly enough becomes one of the few males who become hunters for the hunting goddess Artemis, now he fits in rather well since like Artemis and Athena he has no interest in romance, this infuriates Aphrodite who charms his stepmother to demand the lad for some....family time.... Atreus:.....ew.... Mimir: get used to it, Greek history is rather ripe with incest, now were was I. Oh yes, his stepmother takes her life and has a note on her body claiming hippolytus killed her. Theseus asks his father to kill his son and so he does. Atreus: What? Why! Mimir: kind of a way to restore honor, kill the man who defiled your wife, so Theseus gets rather lonely and asks the goddess aphrodite for the hand of the most beautiful woman in Greece, so she takes Helen of Troy from her husband the spartan king Menelaus and this promptly starts the trojan war, after the war he goes to the underworld and tries to take persephone, goddess of spring and wife to hades. This obviously goes badly, but rather than being punished for his insolence Zeus has him watch over the steeds in the isle where the sisters of fate reside. Atreus: Oh, then what happened? Kratos: I killed him. Mimir: why am not surprised... Atreus: Uh, why? Kratos: I was searching for the sisters of fate, my father had tricked me and taken my powers. I sought vengeance. Atreus: Oh, was he tough? Kratos: he was a skilled opponent, but I ultimately bested him. Atreus: sounds about right.

It's funny when you consider that the bosses in the first game (the Hydra, the giant Minotaur and Ares) all had health bars. Guess the developers felt it would feel more immersive if they didn't show the boss' health bar. Gotta say, they hit the jackpot! 👍
