I love Auralnauts' stuff, but I've just got a sick feeling in my stomach watching Boston Dynamics videos, because I know they're just a few years away from deploying honest-to-Sam murderbots as infantry support to surveillance and predator drones at home and abroad. The dancing is just social media bait propaganda. Better start learning how to break their shit, 'cause soon it's either you use your head or don't and you're likely to lose it by a LIDAR-assisted real life aim bot with a gauss rifle.

For me the key point here is the kinematics. We've solved dynamic balance and humanoid bipedal dynamic movement. Which is, as someone who is old enough to remember the ground floor of robotics of this kind, amazing, miraculous even. Right now the only barrier to human replacement combat bipedal, quadrupedal, and tracked/wheel systems are the needed dynamic programming solutions. Which is an entire other level of processing and programming. But that in no way detracts from the amazing kinematic capabilities of these robots. Even if the movement is scripted the robots are in a real world environment and their movements are governed by a feed back loop that is tied to to their balance keeping and reaction systems. In that way we have solved the dynamic real time loop problems we had back in the day. To put it simply, the problem of real time dynamic response to environment (balance for instance or an object) while also obeying and completing a desired action or motion. In terms of programming this results in an problem of dominant loop or authoritative process order problem. If the action causes out of balance, then it must be canceled and override to prevent a disaster.. except the action must be completed. Who wins? Hat's off to these guys and others. Having multi-threading today, which we didn't have before, helps but you still have to ask, who is authoritative.. and who amends or alters the motion and issues commands to components. It's actually vastly complicated. I still recall hopping pogo gimbal robot on a tether.
