Hey folks, this will be the 'last' video of my voice-over experiment. Over the last four videos, I addressed the issues you guys pointed out in your feedback and applied them to this video. So if you liked this video, let me know in the comments below. If you did not like it and prefer the original subtitle format, let me know too. I will post a poll on social media and on KZbin next week to determine whether we should continue with voice-over videos or go back to the subtitle format. All the best, and enjoy the Lake Shore Limited. Thibault

Wasn't expecting this video to be entirely narrated over the subtitles, which was a nice change but I kinda prefer the subtitles more as your French accent can often be hard to understand. In all honesty, I'd rather watch one of your vids with the subtitles instead. I don't mind if it happens once in a while as it's a good reminder to us viewers your from France.

I used to be a regular commuter on this train - if you book a little further in advance, you can get a coach seat between Boston and Chicago for less than $100! Also, if you just can't sleep sitting up, you can lie down behind the last row of seats in the coach...or ride from Boston to Albany in coach and change to the sleepers in Albany (the price difference between a ALB-CHI sleeper and a BOS-CHI sleeper can sometimes be a couple hundred dollars!) ALSO...Thibuault really undersells the scenery on this route. Between Worcester and Albany you're winding through beautiful New England woods along the banks of happy little streams and next to picturesque little lakes while the Berkshire mountains rise on either side of you...maybe it's because I'm a native New Englander but I've got a soft spot for that kind of thing :). Also, you go right through the middle of US Steel's Gary Steelworks. Only a small bit of the original plant is still in use, and the rest has been left to rot. Mile after mile of collapsing factory buildings, rusting lift bridges, empty ship berths, and grimy shunting locomotives. It is the least natural landscape I have ever seen, and I'll never forget it.

Merci!

Amtrak really needs to have North Station and South Station link up, (would likely cost ~$10bn to do so). It would help Amtrak and the MBTA Commuter Rail service so much. The "Northeast Regional" could then go all the way up to Portland, Maine; which would be a boon for that state.

It's fun to see you departing from my local train station in Boston. I've done the LSL as far as Toledo and back. That was a special trip because we were taken off the train and bussed to Albany, through the snow in the "wilds" of western Massachusetts under the light of the full moon! It's a pretty ride out of Boston, I think. Better than wild to describe western Mass. would be "rural"--there are quite a few areas without cell phone service, which always surprises me!

Amtrak once (circa 1983) had a three-way split at Ogden, Utah on the west-bound Zephyr (routed via southern Wyoming): one section on the Pioneer to Boise & Portland, Oregon. Another section on the Desert Wind to Las Vegas & Los Angeles. A third section continuing on the Zephyr to Emeryville, California.

I rode the California Zephyr in the mid 90s, they were doing the Pioneer split in Denver on the days the Desert Wind didn't run. The Desert Wind split in Salt Lake City at the old Rio Grande Station. It was on the rear of the Zephyr it had the Diner Car, 3 coaches, a sleeping car. Most everyone on that end was going to Las Vegas. That was one of the stupidest cuts Amtrak made.

If you're traveling in coach (or the Amtrak breakfast offering isn't to your liking) into Chicago for a morning arrival, consider skipping the Amgrub and walk a couple of blocks from the station to longtime Chicago landmark Lou Mitchell's Restaurant, open for breakfast and lunch. I did this round trip as part of a BOX-CHI-LAX-[bus]-BFD-OKJ[5 days in San Francisco]EMY-CHI-BOS in 2003. I've also taken it between Boston and Springfield or Pittsfield on a couple of occasions. Massachusetts, in conjunction with Amtrak, will be expanding service from Boston to Springfield and Albany in coming years, so it'll be more than just one train daily. My favorite trains I've ridden so far: the California Zephyr in the west, and the Adirondack in the east. The scenery on the Adirondack is particularly beautiful along the Hudson River and Lake Champlain.

You woke up in Toledo, Ohio! I used to live there. That city gets served by 2 Lake shore limited trains, and 2 capitol limited trains. Fun fact about Toledo is, it used to be capable of 16 or 17 trains at one point. Nowadays, the station only has 2 fully usable tracks (tracks that go in on one end and go out on the other). Mainly because more often than not, the Lake shore limited and capitol limited show up at very close to the same exact time in the morning going to Chicago. I actually was on the Lake shore limited going to Chicago one day when the capitol limited was very slowly going out of the station and the lake shore was actually pulling into the station not 100 feet behind the capitol on the same track! Both in motion, very cool and rare to catch on video!

I've done the Cardinal, Silver Star, Silver Meteor (twice), and Night Owl overnight in Coach. honestly I slept about as well as I did on my Auto Train sleeper and I had a great time almost every single time, with the only exception being a break down on the Silver Meteor causing a 5-hour delay. plan on taking the LSL to Cleveland next month, hopefully the train is delayed because 3:53am arrival is a little too early and so is a 5:50am departure given that I won't be staying near the station. next time, I'll definitely head out to the platform to clean my window!

Also did the Canadian portion of the Maple Leaf. Don’t know if I’ll ever have the chance to take the Lake Shore Limited so watching your video is a nice alternative. I hope that the plan to get the Wolverine extended to Windsor in Canada will happen as that would be an easy way for me to get to Chicago.

I wish the Vermonter went back to Montréal. There is so much potential wasted in that stretch because Canada is even worse at building large infrastructure than the US. It's taken Canada over 40 years to finish joining A35 starting near Montréal, with I-89 in Vermont. Same goes for train service. Amtrak stops ~20km from the Quebec border in St Albans, Vermont and Via Rail doesn't want to setup a Customs station at the Montréal terminal.

Amtrak has traditional dining on routes west of Chicago and west of San Antonio which are free meals for sleeper passengers and some of those routes (most likely not during summer) coach passengers can buy the traditional dinning but pricy those cost $25 for breakfast, $35 for lunch, and $45 for dinner and those meals are cooked on the train.

I travel from Cleveland to Hyde Park, NY (Poughkeepsie) regularly and hate the incredibly boring drive. The train is only a few hours longer to take and no stress, and only 90 minutes from Poughkeepsie into Moynihan in NYC. I've not had any issues with punctuality with the Lake Shore Limited but understand I'm in the minority. Plus, when you buy months in advance it really is cheaper than the gas to drive it.

Even true it's not a major point on this video, the Penn Central sold the Penn station air right in NY because they wanted to get rip of the station and it's mainly the Madison Square Garden complex that had been build in place, but there is also an office building that had been build on the airspace. At least the lost of the penn station had lead to the creation of the landmark preservation and that probably what save Grand Central to be demolish as well (even if the Pam Am building had been build next to the station). Otherwise, I had use Amtrak night train twice on the former Montrealer train that used to connect Montreal to Washington via the Connecticut river. That train had been replace by the Vermonter ... i don't remember when, but that's a long time ago ... Otherwise, I travel once on the Adirondack and in a few occasion on the Northeast direct (or his predecessor) beetween New York and Washington. Never try however the Acela or the previous higher speed service on the northeast corridor, the Metroliner.

During cuts in the 1990s, Amtrak was forced to get subsidies from states to get many trains to continue to run (the fedral budget had likits on what traisn could be federally funded or somthing to that effect) . Vermont was not willing to pay for the Montrealer section in canada so it was cut and the train renamed Vermonter, There were talks of re-extending the train to Montréal, but with the loss of Centrral station this is likely not going to happen. New York State funds the Adirondack to Montreal because they see tourism potential. (and NY Tourism offers discount codes on the Adirondak train). Another issue: the Montréaler was overnight train with heritage fleet which was past its retirement age. and right now, Amtrak is short of Viewliner sleeping cars and diners (but they are soon to go to tender for new long distance equipment and maybe that will free up equipment to restart the Montréaler , assumung CDPQ is willing to allow it into its Central Station at convenent times (it has delayed the return of Adirondak, refused to honour contract Amtrak had with previous onwer (CN) and want to hiek fees. It gave Amtrak truly undesirable deatrture time of 11:10 which means a lot of the trip is done in darkness versus northnound which leaves New York betwene 08:00 and -09:00
@rolandsanfacon4398
@rolandsanfacon4398 5 ай бұрын
That's right Jean-François. Thank you also for pointing me the issue with CDPQ, I wasn't aware of that one. If I remember well there is also an issue with the cost the Canadian border service agency require to clear the train and of course the bad condition and speed limitation of the cn rouses point subdivision (and I doubt that the swanton subdivision that has to be use to connect the Vermont border with Cantic is in better condition) that most of the subdivision had a 30 mph speed restriction (in summer, CN even wanted to enforce a temporary restriction of 10 or 15 mph so Amtrak limit the Adirondack to Saratoga Spring only during that period because the time require to cover the 42 miles of the subdivision would have been way to long. I remember that at the begining of the Vermonter, Amtrak offer a bus connexion to / from Montreal but that didn't last long, I guest the ridership was very low on that service.

With CN having lost the revenue from Adirondak using central station, it only has revenue from it using its tracks from Victoria bridge to the border, and that is only 2 traims per day. CN expects Amtrak to pay if it wants these freight tracks upgraded to run at passenger speeds like they used to. For the Adirondak, the stretch between the junction with Swanton and the border is used exclusively by Adirondak since CN doesn't have track rights south anymore (when it was owned by Delaware and Hudson, there could be some interlining, but even sice it became owned by CP (now CPKC) CN won't send any trains down that way. Neither the US nor state government will subsidize CN to upgrade tracks in Canada. So not sure why CN plays hard ball and expects subsidies. US border request 60 minutes to clear train, Canadian border wants 90 minutes. That is baked into schedule but they often clear it in much less time. @@rolandsanfacon4398

i've ridden the Southwest chief to Chicago twice, the Captial limited from Chicago to DC and back once, a NEC regional, a acela and two Hiawatha service trains. so far my favorite has been the Capital Limited but this was pre service cuts back in 2017 so i don't think id enjoy it now with how butchered it's become.

When we lived in Grand Rapids we tried the Amtrak to chicago. Disaster. Never on time. Eventually we found we could drive to Michigan City Indiana and catch the commuter line into millenium park for $13 rt w free parking.

Hi i have a suggestion for a trip report in england.I would like you to travel with avanti west coast (ex virgin trains) from london euston to chester or holyhead in standard of first class on one of there class 221 super voyager trains which are being replaced soon (only by avanti) by class 807 hitachi trains so one last ride before they go would be lovely! Hope you read this message you can see if virgin trains is better than avanti west coast?😆 Well hope you read this! Bye bye!

Please go back to your subtitled videos, I found them greatly relaxing and entertaining. Meanwhile, the new format I have real trouble understanding and the ambient sound is lost, which was a huge part for me at least. I do love your content but can't really enjoy that much anymore.

I really enjoy the calm ambient sounds of the subtitled videos too. It's nice to calm down to after a stressful day at work. I know KZbin wants to encourage a "typical KZbinr" format, but I really enjoy how calm your videos are and wouldn't want them to turn into the typical format!
