A restoration of the interior deck of a vintage 13' Boston Whaler with crazing and cracking that needs repair. Watch as we grind out the cracks, fill and fair, then prime and paint with Wet Edge Paint in Boston Whaler Blue - that famous interior color for whalers.

So I've done a few whalers and hers some tips you guys may appreciate. The bigger cracks are best done as shown here, the hairline cracks fill with primer and won't show thru the final coat. As far as sanding the textured part of the deck, get yourself a stainless steel grill brush. Using dish soap and water, scrub floor alternating directions with the texture. The stainless brush effectively cleans and sands the low part in the texture. Then I run a sanding block with 220 grit paper over the top to clean up the top of the texture. Use a microfiber cloth wet with acetone to clean out the texture. Go over it twice with separate rags. I've been using Interlux Interdeck lately and really like it. Easy to brush and looks great.

This is a band aid kind of repair, it does not address what caused the crazing in the first place. The crack will only reoccur.

@@willpelton1619 not only hull integrity but also water intrusion. Old whaler can hold a ton of water and if you preform this when its humid out, rainy, etc or havent given the boat due time to dry then you can add hundreds of #'s to your boat without knowing.

wiping it down with acetone before grinding seems like unnecessary labor, especially since you have to wipe it down as part of prepping for paint.
@mjremy2605

Not really. You remove any tarry, greasy blobs and globs and films. This allows you to see what needs to be ground out, and fine cracks that may not have been visible before. Sandpaper also grips clean surface better and does not gum up as fast.

I have a 1977 supersport that was modified with a center console and seat. The seat screw holes recently stripped. Can I fix this by epoxy filling and gelcoat and rescrewing? I am also not sure the original retrofit was done right.

Hi, Great job. I have a 1965 13 foot Boston Whaler. The floor is textured for what I assume was for non slip. How do I address this when priming and painting the interior of the boat similar to the way you did in this video? Will the paint/primer cover this?
@JamestownTV
@JamestownTV 8 жыл бұрын
It will work and if you are happy with the texture, simply apply regular boat paint (Wet Edge Paint works great in the Boston Whaler Blue) over the nonskid area!

I never got an answer to my previous question but here's another anyway. So I noticed you only seem to be grinding out the major cracks. I have a lot of real small hairline cracks on mine and I see there are a lots of hairline cracks you may (or may not) be grinding. Since I have millions of them, is it necessary to grind these out too?

No. Those are crazing cracks. Those fill with primer

I have small hairline cracks all over my 13' whaler. Some are in the floorboard treading area as well. i would like to keep the grip treading intact if possible and not sand it. How do I work out those cracks within the tread area? Will the fairing compound or primer fill them in?
@mjremy2605

Durabak makes a textured polyurethane paint that is ideal. It is thick and has crumb rubber for non skid effect. It is a flexible paint that you can apply like a rubber compound. The issue with cracks is that they expand and contract with the weather. You want a paint that is rubber-like and flexible, but not brittle such as an epoxy. Use Durabak to paint over these fine cracks. It should 'glue' them together. I am thinking that is paint featured in video will work the same way but I have not researched it like Durabak. They seem like similar cross-liked polymer urethanes.

I ordered some of the total boat faring compound yesterday , I'm waiting on my paycheck to determine how much I can afford .. How much will I need to cover an entire 13 ft whaler? I used ultratuff last time and that was a big waste of money . Hoping the wet edge will be better and more reliable

The whaler came out very nice , thanks for asking.. I was surprised how easy the fairing compound was to use as well as the jd primer , wet edge topside paint .. What I like about the whaler blue color is it really pops when water is added , gives it the wet look that I want!! I didn't think I could have done it without my friends from Jamestown Dostribiturs ...thanks again guys

what type of paint do you recommend for the outer hull of the boat? since you mentioned that this paint is best for above water line
@JamestownTV
@JamestownTV 8 жыл бұрын
+ryan doran The WetEdge paint can be used above the waterline inside and outside of the boat. (On the outer hull) For the bottom however, and depending on how you use the Whaler (trailer, dock, and really how often does it stay in the water?) you will want to use a Bottom Paint. You can shop for lots of options for bottom paint here: tinyurl.com/jxk6xua and you can call our Tech Help Line to inquire about which one will work best for your boat and situation and really - which works best in your harbor!

Jeff Rohlfing hi. If someone were to paint a whaler like this in blue over white. How can you keep the stencil number without painting over it?
@adreanlinerusher
@adreanlinerusher 5 жыл бұрын
@@supermotoboy3664 just pick up some stencils from hobby lobby. Write down the serial number and paint over it. Then using say the blue paint in the video, take a small cup of paint in a throwaway cup and add a little black or white for pigmentation and mix, then paint tape your stencil on once the paint undreath is dry and paint over. Should give a really clean look. You can also stamp aluminum from Harbor freight which looks pretty good to.

@mjremy2605
@mjremy2605 3 жыл бұрын
@@jondo5045 Use a wire cup brush and an angle grinder. See my response in detail above. Use a stipple roller to add the paint to textured surface. Durabak also makes a textured polyurethane bed liner with crumb rubber added for non skid. US Navy buys their product - its very good. But not high gloss, only a satin sheen. You can also add the crumb rubber to any paint but be sure to color match rubber.
