Dieffenbachia Dumb Cane Easy Houseplant Care

I discovered mine had scale yesterday. It was so therapeutic picking them off (only about 15). It was nice to spend so much time touching the plant, picking the scale off and wiping the leaves. It looks a lot better today. I cut off a Leaf that wasn't looking so good and today a new leaf started to unfurl. 😊

The largest dieffenbachia I have ever seen was approximately seven to eight feet tall. It inspired me to get a dieffenbachia. Now mine is almost four feet tall.

These plants are just everywhere here in our place..near the rivers.. in the wild.. and yes they are really tall... My husband actually brought 4 big ones like 4ft tall when he saw that one farmer is just cutting them and throwing them away.. he wanted to bring the taller ones but they are heavy 😁

Mine is about 4 feet tall too. If I were able to stretch out the canes all the way it could even be 5-6 feet tall! I actually don’t like it when it gets that tall because it gets too leggy. I want to have my dieffenbachia more bushy; otherwise it starts falling down. It only stands up because it kinda leans against the wall, and I also have to use stakes to help hold them up, which I don’t like.

I have two dieffenbachia and although my oldest, which I got a year ago, was great until winter and then it turned into a first class pain in the rear end. It was dropping leaves like crazy and there wasn't a lot of info out there so I recently filmed a care vid for this plant on my channel. Now that I've sorted out it's "issues" it has grown into a monster! The second one, which was given to me a couple of months ago, has been much less temperamental - until I went away for a few days and forgot to water it before I left. Yep, when I returned I was greeted w/ 4 or 5 yellow dying leaves, LOL. I'm glad your experience w/ this plant has been much easier.

Mine is on a northern balcony that is very slightly exposed from east too and i think it grows best like this, because the plant is super full and 1.5 meters high (including the large pot)

Love the “Yorkie Break”! Thank you for this video. I’ve been struggling with my dieffenbachias. I will try changing up the soil type as I’ve got most in a drier mix. Unfortunately I don’t have an east window but I will try giving them more light. I’ve been cutting off new branches and water propagating with success. Your results are quite impressive!😄

Mari Bootz so glad you liked the video! Is it fairly easy to grow in water? Yes, sometimes freshening up the soil is all it needs. Depending on the batch of dirt, sometimes it can be a bad batch. I’ve had to do that in the past, because the soil always looked dark and moist and developed white mold on it. But when I dug into the soil, the roots were super dry. Hope changing up the soil works 🤞🏽!!

Botanibabies ! Yes it is easy to water propagate. Like you, I wait until it’s a decent size then cut it off from the mother plant and put directly in water. The roots grow fairly quickly and then I transfer it to soil. It’s a three step process but it works for me. 😉

I have a dumb cane that was given to me by a 84yr old Korean lady who passed away in December and i know things come and go but mine is not doing well and i want to keep at as long as i can. I’m definitely not giving up on it. I will try my hardest to try different things to help it. Some of the leaves just keep turning yellow. Thank you for your videos 🙏🏽☺️

Keeping my fingers crossed and sending some good plant juju your way! Yellow leaves are a sign of over watering. Perhaps try to let it dry out completely between. Sometimes though, it's normal for older leaves to fall off to allow newer leaves to develop. So long as it's not yellowing at a faster rate than it is growing, it should be okay. But, try letting it dry out and see if that helps. Good luck and I hope the dieffenbachia makes it!

Hi Tasmeen, sometimes yellowing leaves can be a sign of over watering. If you start to notice that most of the leaves and the overall condition of the plant is not doing well, then it is overwatering. If there is one or two leaves at the very bottom that is yellowing, but the plant overall is fine, then it might just be that those leaves have matured to its maximum life and is time to be plucked off. It really depends on each specific plant. Hope that helps to clarify the yellowing leaves.

I’m having trouble with my difenbachia. The leaves keep turning brownish yellow. I’ve had problems with gnats but I’ve gotten rid of them. I haven’t had to water it lately because of weather and sunlight. When I do water I bottom feed them because of the fungus gnats. I don’t understand this particular plant, my other difenbachia never have me any trouble. I have four beautiful plants out of that one, this one I purchased at Lowe’s it’s just hard to get to know. What am I not doing would you know?

Hi Mz Ervin, it's hard to say exactly what is wrong with the plant. If I had to suspect, It might have root rot. If it's an older plant, the soil could also be compacted. If you only water from the bottom, it may not be getting to the roots deep within the plant. In this case, since it's hard to determine exactly what is wrong with it, it's best to take a clipping to propagate in water in case the main plant doesn't make it. Good luck!

Hi there! This plant has a tendency to lean towards the light source. I would recommend rotating the plant every so often so that it can change the direction that it leans, eventually straightening out. I also believe that harvesting the little babies have contributed to how straight my mama plant is. There are no babies around it pushing it to grow in one direction or another, so that helps. Lastly, you can also put a stake in your plant and then tie the main stalk to it so that it forces it to grow straight (if it's tall enough). Hope that helps!

I'm embarrassed that I hesitated for years due to the rude name, so I didn't want it in my house, but my wife got this cat I want to get rid of, and I heard this plant can do that. Okay that's a lie, and I don't know why I'd think that would be funny. I love our cats. I got this milk tea from a food van today, and then I got coffee from Starbucks. I'm probably "hopped up" on caffeine. I must have annoyed my wife cause she's baking something in the kitchen. I'm not allowed to bother her while she's baking, so I'm on KZbin.... Anyways, I'm here because I just bought this beautiful dieffenbachia today. It's almost entirely white with spots and splotches of light green. It's beautiful. That's probably it! I got dieffenbachia poisoning! Wait, that wouldn't account for the past twenty years. Yes, this year is twenty years of marriage. OMGosh! Great video. Got to go look up my anniversary.

Missty Miss releasing moisture from the leaves is just perspiration and is totally normal when you water. This also happens to philodendrons and pothos. No worries! Just be sure that it’s not in standing water for long periods. 🤓

New sub here....I found 1 for free through a neighbor...it was in a basket with 7 other nice tropical plants,it has 4 stalks..its like a foot tall...the top leaves where all yellow and droopy so I cut them off and repotted it...seems healthier now...can you tell me if the leaves will continue to grow?or did I hurt it by cutting them off?I only had it 1 week and it still looks good....

Hi Amber! It is definitely good to cut off any yellowing or browning parts, because the plant should reserve its energy to put towards the remaining healthy parts. Repotting it is also great, because there may have been something in the soil or root rot that was causing the yellowing to begin with. This plant likes to completely dry out between waterings and from what it sounds like yours is going to be just fine! Thanks for the note and good luck with your new plants!

I caved and bought a beautiful dieffenbachia because of the leaf design. This plant can kill people and pets within minutes. My grandkids are older... well, it's next to impossible to get them to eat a salad, so I'm not worried. These leaves/plant looks great clustered with the dark green leaves of peace lilies and Chinese evergreens.

LOL Thank you so much! Yellow leaves are a sign of over watering. Make sure you're waiting for it to dry out completely before watering it again. if it's in a pot without a drainage hole, you may want to wait longer. If you have a drainage hole, I like to pick it up to see if it feels light. The best way to tell is to get a moisture meter. It's been a plant-life saver for me :)!

My baby dumb cane is in 4" pot from seller, it was shipped to me a week And a half ago the leaves are all at a downward state I watered it and they rose a lot but still dont point up like yours am I doing something wrong? My dumb cane has white solid center green edges don't recall its name type she's in a window that is sunny most of the day. I live in Kansas if that helps determine my plants issue.

Hi Kim, I would recommend to keep an eye on it over the next several weeks. It may be in shock from being boxed without light for the few days it was in transit. Be sure to be careful not to over water it. There is a chance that the leaves may not improve and you may have to wait for the new growth to come in.

Hi Nadine - I love that name! I would carefully inspect the plant for any pests. My mama plant started to look like that recently and noticed teeeny tiny spider mites on it :'(. I sprayed it with soapy water solution which seemed to help, but the leaves still look the way they do. Fortunately, there is new growth and the new leaves don't look like that. Otherwise, I would recommend checking to see if it needs to be watered more? Is yours in a pot that has drainage holes?

​@@Botanibabies Thank you, and thanks for your reply. The soil is nice and moist, and I see no signs of spider mites. In fact, there are new leaves coming in from the center. It's sitting in the nursery pot, which I placed into another slightly larger decorative pot. The bottom of the nursery pot has no roots coming through the drainage holes, which is kind of odd no? Anyway, today the leaves don't seem so curled up, so maybe it had to get acclimated to its new environment? The leaves still seem mighty dull looking tho.

@@nadinep.simmons9981 Yes, acclimating to their new environment is definitely a possibility as to why the leaves weren't looking their finest. What's most important is that it's giving you new leaves! That's a sign that it is doing fine. Not having roots coming through the bottom means it still has a lot of time to spend in the pot it is in. Usually when you see overgrown roots at the bottom of the pot, you would experience a lack of growth if it gets too root bound. Hopefully, the new leaves coming out will be brighter and healthier. The dull looking leaves might just be reaching the end of their rope, which is normal. Best of luck, Nadine!

I just recently purchase two large dieffenbachia. One is a camouflage and has more than one plant in the pot and the other is I believe a new variety called maybe Tiki I think plant Arena showed it or should I say Amanda showed it when she took her pink princess to the greenhouse to be propagated. Both of them have multiple plants in the pot now I'm wondering if I should separate them or leave them alone. They are gorgeous plants and then I bought another plant but I'm not sure what it is if you go to my channel Kathleen Murphy and there's a bunch of Kathleen Murphy's and add the word house houseplant orchids coleus philodendron for my name in the search engine you'll find me. The plan I'm trying to identify is called the video that is is called plant shopping at Weis Market or something like that. I couldn't believe these huge plants were only $12. I want to go back and buy a majesty palm it's only 12 it's about chest High still has a lot of growing and there was a gorgeous large waist-high peace lily and another large plant that I can't remember the name of right now it's the one let's read and comes from Hawaii I think it's cordyline that was $12 so there's three of them I'd like to go back and get and also they had a small bird of paradise for $6 it's about I don't know less than 10 inches tall it's a white one I just like the leaves I have a larger one. I'm just trying to figure out where I'm going to put all my plants whenever I have to bring them in. I have five gardenia trees they need to be repotted because they're not blooming like they did last year hurt my baby needs more fertilizer cuz they're still in their original Nursery pots.

fletshei from what I’ve read online it’s called transpiration and or guttation. Your specific environment would determine which your plant is experiencing. It’s relatively normal for this plant, mine does it a lot in the summer to cool itself off or when the roots have pressure and need to release water in humid environments. Hope that helps!

I got a dumb cane about 3 months ago from a big box store. There's 6 plants in a 4 inch pot and it looked like a nice bushy plant. I noticed that all the leaves were a bit crispy when I got it but I just assumed it's probably from transport to the store or something.. 3 months later it's losing leaves faster than it's growing and all the leaves are still crispy.. It gets a good amount of medium light but everything I try doesn't seem to be working unfortunately. Have you got any ideas? I've been very cautious on the watering and repotted it about a month ago into way better soil but no improvements.

Yikes! I would put it in the sunniest area that you have for now. Mine really like sunlight, so perhaps that is what it is missing. Hopefully whatever was in the soil making the leaves brown and crispy is gone. Some leaf loss is normal, but as you're describing it's faster than the growth rate. Also, make sure to wait until the soil is totally dry until its next watering. Hope that helps!

@@Botanibabies Thanks! I just put it under my window with all the others so i'll see if this helps. The stems have always been a bit mushy as if it's been over watered but I let the top 3 inches dry out before watering. I'll try more light and more water and see what happens :)

Hi Rushawna! I personally don't have experience in using grow lights, but I would imagine that it would be totally fine to use one for dieffenbachias. Mine like to be near my sunniest window, so they are not afraid of direct sunlight (as much sunlight as I get here in seattle lol)

Yvonne Cafe describe how the leaves are looking currently, as that may determine the reason why it’s not growing or is looking unhealthy. How big is the plant currently? Was it growing before but stopped growing? What type of container is it in, does it have a drainage hole? Are you giving the plant sufficient light? What indications are you using to determine when to re water the plant? These are some of the variables that might lead you to determine what’s wrong with the plant. Hope that helps! ❤️🌱

About a week ago I noticed my dumb cane leaves starting to droop, so I watered it last week. It’s been a week now and it’s still not perking up ( I just watered again yesterday). I also checked it’s roots and repotted it and the roots are healthy! Do you have any recommendations?? Thanks!

Michaela well first I recommend getting a moisture meter so that you know for sure that it needs to be watered. If it’s not in a pot with a drainage hole, you may get root rot. Also, is it placed in an area with lots of sun? No sun? There are a lot of variables at play that could be causing it to droop.

Botanibabies ! Thanks for the help! It is in a SW facing window about 7ft from the window, gets nice indirect light. The pot has drainage holes and it sits upon rocks and water to give it some more humidity since I live in a pretty dry place. I’ll check the roots again and see how it is.... I repotted it a couple times in a short amount of time so maybe that’s it

I just bought new potting soil and I think it must have gotten damp earlier in the year at Lowe's I still used it but it had some white mold growing on the outside part in the bag it was near where I guess water leaked in is this a bad thing to do to use that I've never had it happen before

Ik this is kinda late but my mom has harvested this plant into two and has kept them in just water for a year, they won’t grow much they get little babies and that’s it so I put one in soil will it still grow or is it a lost cause at this point?

I recommend planting them in soil. They need nutrients from the dirt that they are not getting in just water. It should grow now that you have planted it 🤓.

Hi Angel, I don't really do anything extra to increase humidity for my plants other than misting them every other day or so in the summer (when I remember lol). I don't think humidity would be the thing that makes this plant struggle... is yours getting enough sunlight?

I love when ppl document how much their plant babys have grown! They look so cute in their pots ^o^ btw how much experience do you have with fungus or mold? I know you had an issue with mold in the soil of your Potho(?), any update for that plant? I just found this spiky white mold on one of the dead stem of my golden Pothos and I nearly screamed lol it’s so nasty! My only plant that has an issue is this golden Pothos (one of my first plant buys!) first it always had mildew (i let it dry completely too!) and now this disgusting thing and I’ve already changed the soil once :/ just asking bc when I try to search up this specific looking mold, I find nothing. It’s not mildew looking, it looks spiky; I thought it was a caterpillar >_< got any advice or thoughts? Idk if it’s dangerous, but I might be repotting, cleaning and snipping off the stem. Again. >__

frozen-yogurt-yes oh no!!!! I wonder if pothos plants are just super prone to fungus. I also had trouble researching what type of fungus it was and couldn’t find anything. All I know is that it had a light yellow color and looked like little tiny balls (like dippin dots ice cream lol). I kept the pothos in my macramae hanging pot but then moved it onto the top of my bookshelf hoping it would trail. Sadly, it started to lose leaves at the base (they turned yellow and just fell off). I never changed the soil and just tried to ignore the mold lol. I made sure to let it dry up between watering a which eventually made the mold go away. The baldness however made the plant look tragic. I decided to give it a hair cut and cut it way back. I propagated the cuttings and made new plants. But the older plant miraculously started growing again!! I will have to do an update because now it looks so good and normal. I didn’t even have to repot or change the soil! Wondering if your plant has the same type of mold? The new pothos that I just potted doesn’t have the mold. I think if your roots have it, it’ll just continue to grow on the rest of the dirt unless maybe you use some soap. The roots are pretty strong! Sending you good plant vibes and hope the mold goes away!!

Botanibabies ! That’s awesome that it just fixed itself after the mold went away ^_^ glad to hear it’s better now! I ended up taking out the plant to inspect the roots and nothing looked abnormal, so maybe the soil just wasn’t the best? I always had let it dry out but I really don’t know why I had a mildew and mold issue that would appear the moment I water -_- anyway I switched the soil and even the pot bc it was in terra cotta which was looking rough lol I was so scared I was going to see some weird mold deep in the old pot >< but it was all clear!

I think I saw on an episode of Summer Rayne Oakes that if a Zz plant has flowers you need to repot it. It only flowers when it thinks it is going to die and pollinate. It's the episode where she reports the giant zz. I guess its too root bound and it needs to be separated.

Hmm... usually when a plant gets leggy it's because they're trying to reach out for the light source. Are you able to move it closer to the sun? Also, I'm wondering if your plant is an older plant and might be needing some vitamins. It might need just a little bit of fertilizer? Hope that helps and good luck!

Awww... if it’s still growing that means the babies will come soon. Usually babies will come when it has fully grown in the container it is in. Others have also propagated by cutting it in half and then using the water prop method. I have not personally done that with this specific plant though.

I have the hardest time keeping these alive. They always lose their leaves and then grow tiny, tiny leaves with Dry tips. Spindly. Too wet or too dry? Ugh I've tried more light, less light, more water, less water.... I always kill them.

Yikes, sorry to hear about that :(! There are a couple of the babies that I've come close to losing due to neglect lol. Since there are a lot of variables that I'm not sure about with your specific plant, the only thing I can really recommend is waiting until your plant is completely dry (feels super light in the pot) until you water it again. Hopefully yours is in a container with a drainage hole?

Hi there! Well, any general purpose potting soil will do, but if you tend to be heavy handed in watering and if your pot doesn't have a drainage hole in it, you may want more perlite in your mix. Does your bedroom have windows that can provide good light for the plant? This plant needs more sun to maintain the pattern on the leaves. Hope that helps!

Ash Saggu hi there! It really depends on your weather conditions, is it indoor vs outdoor, does it get direct sun, type of soil it has, and what type of pot it is in plastic/ceramic/terra cotta. The only reason you would water it every day is if it needs it, which depends on the many aforementioned variables...

I just use general purpose indoor potting soil :), but you are free to custom mix your soil. It really depends on the climate you have, how big of a pot it is in, how much sun it gets, and how often you plan on watering. LOTS of variables :)

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear about your plant. I am guessing your symptoms might be due to root rot. Is it big enough to cut to try to water propagate? If most of it is still healthy, make sure you are waiting until the plant is completely dry between waterings. Without knowing a lot of other information about your plant, it's hard to determine why it's that way.
