They, along with Calatheas, do best when given distilled water, it prevents some of the brown tipping. They are such beautiful plants❣️

Hello It's me Rebecca B, My friend gave me the lime green Miranta Leuconora plant about 4 months ago. It was big and luscious. I gave it the distilled water but it still got yellow tip. Now it got smaller. You are definitely correct. If this plant die I won't get another. Thank you for your information. Have a happy New Year 2021.

@@moniquenguyen9476 Hi Monique 😊 Yes, although the Marantas are such beautiful plants, they just don’t do well for me, unfortunately 😕 I can keep them “decent” looking for awhile and then they start to slowly die off. Two Calatheas that I have found to be super easy to care for and so beautiful are the Calathea Lancifolia “Rattlesnake” and the Calathea Makoyana, they are just gorgeous and I’ve had no issues with them at all and I’ve had them for 2-3 years now, love them 😍. Thanks so much for watching and commenting and hope you have a great week❣️🙏🏻🪴💕

This really helped me understand my prayer plant. I always thought they liked the sun but noticed that the leaves would be folded during the day and they would open wide at night. I now know I have to move my plant and I am also going to try and root and pot some of it since it is looking crowded. Thank You!

GORGEOUS Maranta!! I have one and it's almost died on me at least three times!! This Summer I almost lost her to Spider mites and, so I took it out of soil, placed it in water for a few months, in this time I applied insecticidal soap and once I saw that there were no more Spider mites, I repotted it and placed it in front of my Southeast-facing, and now it's thriving!! Can't wait yo propagate it!!❤❤❤

The browning of the leaves is usually caused by watering with water that has lots of chemicals or minerals in it. I water mine with only RO water or preferably a little bit of the distilled I use in my humidifier. Most people who recommend using low mineral/low chemical water have super healthy Maranta's with no browning.

These are really easy plants to love. I recently watched a video of a pro greenhouse nursery grower propagating these from just a single leaf with it's stem that he cut close to the main vine and he was just jabbing them in the six pack seedling flats with plain potting soil. So I'm trying a few from mine to see how it goes. You could get a lot of new plants off of even a small vine. These are amazing plants.

I was given a cutting in June and basically made me fall in love with the marantaceae family... I’ve built my collection to 15 types. Lol but this particular is growing very well in very low light conditions and now with winter coming I just have an led bulb by them. It’s still sprouting new leaves so I’m excited to see it once the next growing season starts.

I love listening and I thank you so very much for all the valuable information you share with us. I did have a quick question and that is what kind of humidifier do you recommend? I have a couple sitting around which I previously used with essential oils but not sure it is doing the trick. I just received today a humidifier gage so hopefully that will help some. Thank you very much

Hi Carol! Thanks so much for the kind note, really appreciate it! I actually don't use a humidifier. Instead, I just use a spray bottle during the summer to give the leaves some moisture. I don't do that so much in the winter, because I feel like I have a lot of humidity in my home (condensation appears on my windows, unfortunately - even though we just had our windows replaced :(...). You could also try placing a bunch of pebbles on a tray and fill it with water and then sit the plant on top. I've seen a lot of people have luck with that. As for mine, I just try to forget about them during the winter lol. Hope that helps!!

Thank you for this very informative video! My Maranta is growing new leaves very often and in summer also has flowers. Some leaves also turn a bit brown at the edges but nonetheless it seems to be doing well. Since one of the branches snapped a little (it it barely holding on), I was thinking of propagating that branch to save the beautiful leaves that it now still has. Now I know that I can indeed propagate it! My plant does not however sprout new leaves just from the soil. I just have 3 long branches now. But after your video, I hope that maybe if I pot a propagated little branch, that will sprout new leaves from soil to fill the pot a bit :). I do have a question about the propagation: if I cut off only a part of the branch, will the remaining branch grow again? Or not?

I found out recently that the water source can cause leaf browning because of all the chlorine and floriod in city water. One should draw their water and let it sit out at least 12 hrs. 24 hrs is better. You could also collect rain water or buy distilled water.

My maranta plant used to stand in a spot with indirect sunlight but it still got quite a lot of light. And it had a bunch of flowers that lasted a few days each. It had brown tips and it was giving me a lot of growth. Now mostly because of space logistics I moved it to a half shadow space. There it has been giving me a bunch of new leaves. The flowers stopped. I water it quite a lot but the leaves are kind of papery which doesn’t seem too healthy. Any idea why that could be?

I'm not quite sure what the problem may be.... but i do tend to notice more browning when I don't mist my plants. Some people swear that it is because of the "minerals in tap water", but honestly I think it has more to do with humidity than that. Try misting it every day or so and see if that helps! Good luck :)

all marantacea family plants, or prayer plants, prefer some form of purified, distilled, filtered or well water. They dont just like humidity, they need it to stay looking pretty, be careful with misting, only do it in the morning to prevent fungal problems. getting an oil diffuser or humidifier will make your life easier. they are difficult to care for but once you've got the conditions right you're set for any kind of Prayer plant.

Thanks for the advice. I have a 15 year old one that seem to be struggling. It used to look pretty good and flowered fairly often. Now I get a few yellow leaves and some browning tips. I will start to water with RO water. When I repotted it a few months ago it perked up a lot but now is fading. I am going to increase watering schedule. I used a custom mix of organic soil with perlite and sand for good drainage. I suspect mineral buildup so I will also flush the plant with warm water and then finish with RO (reverse osmosis), water. Do you recommend using Miracle Grow? I've heard that they don't like it? I have been using it so maybe it's trying to tell me not to?

Freedom Keeper I’m so sorry to hear about your 15 y/o maranta 😢! I used to use miracle grow, but switched to diluted fish emulsion because I didn’t feel like the MG did anything. RO water is probably worse for it than tap! Distilled is the resounding standard for calatheas according to at least 2 dozen sources based on my research, and its extremely different molecularly from RO which has added sodium and often other added synthetic nutrients and distilled water has absolutely none of these things. You can make your own distilled water there are lots of videos online

Brown tips is from your water supply, which likely has fluoride or chlorine in it. Let the water stand for at least. 24 hours for it to evaporate before watering plants to avoid this.

Hi Jessica! The proverbial "they" say its best to do so as you anticipate spring so that when it comes time to transfer it in to soil, it will be in growing season and will ensure that the plant will root nicely in its new home. That said, I propagate all year even in the dead of winter in Seattle and have had no problems with my cuttings! Good luck propagating :)!!

I love them both, but I went for the lemon lime, and almost didn't get the red, because I tried to make a promise that I was ONLY going for the lemon lime. My husband wanted a twister dracaena, just a very dark green one, and I figured, heck; I can get mine too. I'm so happy I got it! Now I REALLY want the lemon lime! 😃 I'm snatching one as soon as I see one!

Hi ! Very good video 😊! I just have a little question : my maranta leuconera is doing great , growing new leaves but all the leaves are like curled, wrinkled or wavy ( idk how To explain and i m french so it's harder 😅) and i dont understand why ! Humidity seems To be fine, my other plants next To my maranta are thriving, i didn't overwater it, the temperature is about 19°c , i only water when the soil is almost completely dry and i have an other maranta ( i think it's the rabbit foot ) just next To this one that is doing great !! The only thing could be that i never ferilized it but i repotted it recentely so if you have any idea ?🤔 Oh and the black of the leaves doesn't have this red/ Pink colour too 🙁 Thanks 😊

Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment. I would recommend keeping the plant moist, so it's okay to not let it dry out completely. That might be the reason for the curling of the leaves. I have only repotted mine twice and I remember each time I did, the leaves would look very very sad and limp and even had some of the more mature leaves turn yellowish. If this is an ongoing issue, I would suggest keeping it moist (not sopping wet) as it does like to be more on the wet side and doesn't like to get dry. If this is a new issue, I would suspect it has something to do with the roots being shocked from getting repotted. Is your plant getting direct sunlight? I know mine do not like direct sunlight and prefer filtered light away from the windows. Hope that helps!

@@Botanibabies thanks for the reply !! Ok so i won't let it dry out completely ! But even when i just water it, the leaves are the same ! I repotted it maybe one month ago and still the same 🤔 But it keeps growing so. .. It doesn't have direct sunlight, it's in front of a western exposure window but there is a roof overhang so it never gets any direct light i don't think it's very bright too but maybe too bright for a maranta 😅 I will try to put it in a less bright spot and i Will see 😌 Thanks again 😊

I’ve had cuttings in both sunny and shady types of environments and have grown them successfully. Depending on the type of plant you’re propagating it, roots might get damaged by super hot direct sun, so best practice would be to use an opaque glass container just to be safe. Hope that helps!

@Botanibabies
@Botanibabies 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Dennis, you should keep them in water until the roots are approximately 4 inches. I would recommend that you pot them after that so that the plant can get nutrients from her soil. It won’t last forever in water and will eventually need to be potted. I’ve actually tried to keep a pothos in water and it made it for over a year, can you believe it? Eventually, the leaves turned yellow and all fell off because it wasn’t getting any nutrients 😢. Hope that helps!

Unfortunately all prayer plants are drama queens. They are sensitive to stress and browning leaves is common. It could be a number of things. My first guess would be a water issue with it being a new leaf that's turning brown. Other problems are not humid enough or it's getting too much sunlight. These are only guesses as I can not see your plant or the soil it's in or how wet it is. If you ever get another one dont repot it straight away. If its root bound then repot but if not then leave it alone. They are fussy.

how do you raise humidity for it?
@Botanibabies
@Botanibabies 5 жыл бұрын
You can get a spray bottle and mist it in the mornings before it gets too hot or right before bed. You can also put pebbles into a tray and fill the tray half way with water and then place your plant above that. Usually that is what you would do for maidenhair ferns or plants that are SUPER fussy. Do you keep your maranta by a drafty door or window or above a heat vent perhaps?

Eeeek! I got the same thing on one of my plants. Keep an close eye on it, there might be pests. I don't know what those pests are on mine, but if it is possible, you should take a couple cuttings in case it doesn't make it. It helps to mist the leaves every day or so to wash off any critters we cannot easily see. I find that using a soapy solution to wash the leaves is too harsh on the maranta, it burns the leaves. So simply using a water mist and keeping an eye out is best. Good luck!

Onayra Rodriguez I killed my first one by overwatering leading to root rot. My current one I treat like royalty. I’ve found like most houseplants, location is key. I tried mine all over the house & it finally ended up in my bathroom (!) as it loves the humidity when I shower! I also found it needs a lot lower light levels than I expected. It is about 8ft away from a north facing frosted window (l’m in the Midlands UK) & seems to be doing well. I also give it bottled water to avoid the chemicals in tap water. I only water it when the soil starts to change colour on top, I’m terrified of overwatering as once root rot sets in, it’s all over. Have to say for a houseplant newbie like me, I would class it as a challenging houseplant that needs care & doesn’t thrive on neglect like most of my plants!
