I’m a Greek background born in Australia. I love this country so much. It helped my grandparents make a better life and we assimilated and became a part of the Australian culture. Whilst I understand this song is before my grandparents time. I feel so patriotic and proud to be Australian (with Greek roots) I love this song. Greatest country in the world. Thank you Australia!

I was one of the stranded Australians overseas during the pandemic. This song always made me homesick. I wished I had wings of a turtle dove so I could fly back home to Botany Bay. Finally made it back to Australia after 18 months of being stranded. First thing I did was go to Botany Bay.

I learnt this in primary school, my teacher taught us all the old greats funny how I’m only 21 but I absolutely love this kind of music.. my grandfather loved slim and I now I can’t get enough. And once I travelled out west I saw the difference in country and people and it makes me understand these old songs one of my favourite is plains of peppimenarti.

Well done. I stumbled upon this rendition googling around for the lyrics of this song in order to settle a dispute with a friend who insisted on singing "hannity" instead of "addity". If I may, I note that the passage of some 200 years allows to enjoy hearing this sung with gaiety, but I wonder if the early performances weren't more mournful, since at the time the song was written the institution of transportation had existed within living memory. Oh, and I love "light-fingered gentry" - I'd forgotten that. I'll be sure to ironically drop that into a conversation as soon as the opportunity presents itself!
@MUDWAYUSHKA7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Daniel. You can see by my notes that this was originally a late 19thC English Music Hall parody....so I vouchsafe it would have been performed very much 'tongue in cheek'..

Australia as we know it began as a penal colony, a dumping ground indeed when British prisons were at bursting point and the Brits need a Pacific base from which to thwart French interests., a fine coincidence. Up until the end of WW2 Australia clung to the skirts of old Mother England then swapped to cling to the coat tails of Uncle Sam. Nothing has changed. We are still lackeys and collaborators to foreign interests. And its 2018!
