A buddy of mine told me Botch layed out so much, for so many bands to go off of. Ever since he told me that, I keep hearing shining examples. Recently discovered early Norma Jean is basically Botch. I'd say less obvious examples include Tony Danza Tapdance Extravagnaza and Frontierer. Still, Botch is in there somewhere.

This really brings to light why the EP format is my favourite. I always loved how EPs were paced, like they had an unrelenting force that lent a hand in creating it, and the songs are as they are, with no filer. Just pure content. Not to say full albums can't do this, but I think in many cases when they try, it often feels like 25 minutes of glory and then another 20 minutes of accompanying second rate material because it's all the same energy, unless it is broken up by B sides or more experimental pieces in between main songs (whether the B-sides are bad or good is a point of opinion). I often plan albums out only in EP formats of 4 or 5 solid songs and then work on expanding to 7, 8, or 9 song albums. Occasionally I have planned out 12-song epics that hit about the 50-55 minute mark where every song is still of course meant to be grand but sometimes some are far more experimental than others to help change pace and break up tedium. Do you ever feel this way about EPs versus full albums? Which stand the test of time, and what are some of your favourite EPs ever made?
@holyshit19165 жыл бұрын
Sacredgeometry I usually prefer full album material in the long run, and I quite like filler. That said i can’t even think of any favorite EP’s. Nothing that tops later albums.
@holyshit19165 жыл бұрын
Safety Second, Body Last Is that an EP? One of my favorites of theirs I’d say daughters 7” but nothing beats Canada Songs. Mudvayne’s demos were pretty cool. Maybe that’s why I like 25 minute black metal songs. OH! I just realized my favorite example: The Growlers’ Couples Volumes. Definitely ep’s, and they are a different band at this point. Definitely check those out.
