scaucasian No there is no free trade agreement between Canada and the EU. Firstly the deal you are thinking of will not be ratified for years. Secondly it only gives preferential treatment and not full market access. Thirdly it has a multitude of remaining tariffs, regulations, quotas and only portends to certain industries. This is not free trade. All this without even mentioning the EU funding slander campaigns against Canadian industries such as oil and seal. Of what are you talking?

and that is the truth - negotiationg and implementing that kind of agreement usually takes years if not decades. It is not going to be different between Canada and the United Kingdom. UK will definately have a frre trade deal with Canada as a EU member than on its own. scaucasian It did not take decades with the Koreans or the Americans. Why should we wait decades when the Koreans and Chinese have real money on the table? Yes, the deal is already overdue, nothing will happen and yes Canadian officials predicted that the EU bureaucracy would take far too long and be far too complex for anything of practical value. Not worth it. We are building and approving infrastructure now, not decades from now and it looks as if the Pacific not the Atlantic is the proper location. Why build this infrastructure solely because the EU may or may not be interested?

From 10/22 we can now see that a vote on divorce from the EU is not necessary. The EU was built on a foundation of peace and prosperity, and now it doesn't have either one. It is therefore coming apart at the seams as "Europeans" repair to their national state to look after their interests. Hardly a European to be found these days. Of course, exactly the same thing happened in 1914.

Interesting debate but still missing the point of "transition". It's nice to talk about political ideologies and bilateral trade agreements but they don't hold much water unless there's an agreed exit plan with associated timescales. That will lead to uncertainty which isn't the favoured position of business leaders. Farage and Hannan will know there will be significant scaremongering from powerful business names. That will change the debate from a political ideological one which, can be won, to a personal one where people start to get twitchy about their jobs and paying the bills. For all the powerful nationalist arguments in the Scots independence referendum, the lack of a valid exit plan meant more people voted with their heads than hearts.

NATO doesn't cost anywhere near as much as the EU, it never makes blanket laws over all the countries involved and it doesn't deny democracy. The EU is making Italy (e.g) help bailout Spain with money it has to borrow at 7% interest but can only make 3% on it for the time they have it because of EU set interest rates. So in order for Italy to help out Spain they are legally bound to get themselves in more debt. Its totally crazy. And the EU never helps us, ever, we have to veto everything

I've seen a lot of these in/out debates and normally at the start of the debate it's pretty even, but by the end most of the undecided go to the "out" group. The nation state is an outdated concept and it doesn't bind the people really together. After all there is nothing much that binds the people in the North of England to those in the South, and London is a separate city-state already: that is not a formula for success. Let's be real and make Europe as a union work and let's not hark back to 19th century past-their-sell-by date concepts. The modern world requires a unified strong Europe that can stand up to the likes of China, Russia and the US (those who think that England is a player in this world of giants is a fantacist) but at the same time it should be a fedartion of regions with a high enough level of autonomy which respects the differences in culture. In such a federation entities as a future independent Scotland and other smaller regions can flourish and grow their full potential. The smaller countries, after all, work much better than the bigger ones in terms of catering to their people's needs and having a good harmonious build-up of their societies. The UK, being the most unequal country in Europe, is on a way which is a recipe for disaster. The only thing that binds the UK together is sentimentality, embodied in the Royal Family and the Queen, and ironically she and her family were originally really German (recall their original family name: Saxe-Coburg Gotha, before it became "Windsor" which was a pure invention made after WWI to avoid bad feelings the German name could engender).

The nation states may have a flavour of democracy but they cannot stand up on our behalf agains the big corporate threats to society and our liberties; only an organisation like the EU can do that, but it needs a European mandate and support from its people to do so. We weaken the EU only at our peril, and a weak EU is precisely what some sinister movements really want to see happen, so that their vulture tactics can do with us what they want.

liar liarliar Not necessarily the UK but comparing apple to Poland´s GDP for example leads to quite interesting results. Additionally, a large part of countries´ GDP comes from corporations. Apple is worth more than the entire Russian stock market for example (if I am not wrong). I think we need to improve the EU but not throw it away. Why? Because we have a whole century of wars and divisions behind us. The EU is a large contributor to the stability in Europe. It does not surprise me that many younger people think it is bad, because they do not know the feeling of being in a war-torn continent. :)

I am perfectly assured that the UK will be far happier after a divorce with the EU, however not so assured about the future prospects of the remaining The EU States., and of course the EU itself.
