For most of my life I didn’t understand how people can have a different experience than me or believe different than me. Because the way I was, I believed whole heartedly that it was the right way and if something else was true, then that meant my experience/belief wasn’t.
I didn’t understand how people could show up to a yoga class and not want to work hard. I didn’t understand how people could not like sports. I didn’t understand how people “would act like they’re dying” when they get sick. I didn’t understand how people can believe in a religion and spend hours every week going to church. Because I didn’t. It lead to feeling that they were weak, stupid or weren’t as good as me.
After much reflection and self study, I started to understand why I felt this way. Really it was my insecurities. I believe that it stems from growing up in a religion that kept telling me that the church was the true church. That this way of thinking was the only way. That if you weren’t part of the church, we needed to convert you to save your soul. Even though from the time I could think for myself, I knew religion wasn’t for me, I was still getting drilled with the idea that only one thing can be true from the time I could walk.
But I’ve come to believe in the Buddhist teaching that both things can be true. Your experience can be true and my experience can be true. This has lead to so much peace in my life.
