They were tired of traffic, so they made it in real life. Unfortunately that was 60 years ago and now there's even more traffic, leading to them updating it recently. Before, it was 16 lanes that saw 460,000 vehicles each week. Now, it has 23 lanes.

You should see the new 40 / 70 interchange we have here in NC now just south of Raleigh. They took out what use to be a simple " + " pattern exit/onramp, and turned it into a giant arse traffic-circle of on/off-ramps.

If you think that interchange is crazy you should see some of the road layout decisions here in utah lmao. We have a road here that passes under a freeway, of course the freeway exits onto this road aswell. But if you are heading north, and get off at said exit going right and try to go left at the next intersection you'll find there is no left turn lane. That is because they made it so convoluted that you have to pass said intersection and go to the dedicated U-turn about 200 feet up the road so you can then turn right where you previously wanted to turn left lol

Yeah, in Europe, that's called a Spanish left turn, and it's statistically a lot safer than just going left onto a main road. But level roundabouts or roundabouts over/besides the highway are better if the joining road has more than occational traffic or if there's feed traffic to the main road from more than one direction.
