Batswana farmers produce great organic vegetables that are not genetically modified, and they also sell at a reasonable price to retailers. The vegetable prices are hiked by the retailers. The Botswana government's intervention should've been on retail price regulation not to lift the ban.

Botswana farmers must compete on price and qaulity and not rely on the political ban, this a business.

The gov't want the country to produce its own food, that's not bad or wrong. A country that doesn't produce its own food is doomed.

We are getting pesticide infested rejects from SA and any normal citizen and gvt will not accept that. No normal gvt can outsource its food security and by extension its national security. Our own Minister of Agriculture can not explain why the ban was lifted. It is amazing that South African seem more informed on the subject matter

My grand father was a Botswana successful farmer he relied on no import ban .He actually competed with SA farmers...they new each other and co existed amicably and competitively no politics intervened it was purely bussiness.

Dude, you must compete and offer better prices. Food is cheap and affordable in South Africa, China, USA, Thailand, India, Kenya and Uganda because of competition. Why do you want to be a millionaire among the poor? You can steal business from competitors by lowering your price. Humble yourself.

@Accuface2000 batswana started fresh produce not a while ago, normally they were cattle rearing people, how can they start & right away compete, they should have been given time to reach a certain stage? I've been to kenya & kenyan people produce food for their own country & they like & have pride to be doing for their country unlike us sitting back & wanting somebody else to do everything for us. The country can't go anywhere without doing anything for itself, don't know when will batswana start realizing that. Talking of food in the US, it's crap & not organic & expensive, that's why the usa has the highest number of homeless people in the world Everything is expensive in the usa, do your studies you'll find out

@@Accuface2000 your response is a reflection of your stupidity, This barn plays a vital role in supporting local farmers by providing them with essential resources and opportunities to grow their businesses. It not only creates employment for the local community but also enhances food security by ensuring a steady supply of fresh, locally produced goods. Furthermore, it contributes to reducing the trade deficit by promoting local agricultural production and reducing reliance on imports. The barn also fosters economic growth in the region and strengthens community resilience by encouraging sustainable farming practices.

The one other problem with Botswana is their strong currency that makes importing cheaper. The Pula has always been between 30 - 40% stronger that the Rand...while Botswana lacks industry to out produce South Africa

Protectionist measures will not work. There was no variety on the shelves.

Good job Duma Boko, the import ban only benefited a few local producers (Less than 20). Government must pass measures that benefit the majority. In Namibia, local producers are greedy and expensive, it's like they want to be millionaires overnight. Fortunately there are South African supermarket chains with competent affordable prices.
