Hi Dee, welcome to Botswana. Just a little correction, the three statues that you mentioned are NOT the first presidents of Botswana but rather the chiefs who went to Britain to ask for protection. Botswana was not colonised but they asked for protection so it was a protectorate rather than a colony. It was never colonised. At that time there were Boers in South Africa, Germans in Namibia and other colonial masters trying to expand their colonies and the chiefs from the different tribes went to the queen in Britain to ask for protection. Botswana then was called Bechuanaland Protectorate and came to end and Botswana became a Republic when they gained independence on 30th September 1966. The first president was Sir Seretse Khama, second was Dr Quett Ketumile Masire, Third was Festus Mogae, Fourth was Sir Seretse Khama Ian Khama the son of the first president and the fifth and current president is President Mokweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi. Botswana is quiet beautiful indeed, if you like nature you can venture towards the north Maun and Kasane area where there are lot of wild animals and the Okavango delta. Like you mentioned the currency is PULA which means rain, the coins are called THEBE which means a shield. USD $ 1= P10 to P12 Botswana Pula ( BWP) roughly. The biggest denomination is P200 BWP which is roughly $20 USD The whole country speaks the same language which is Setswana ( with a few exceptions) and it is the National language otherwise the official language is English, so you should be okay as most people know English. A citizen is called Motswana and plural is Batswana. To say hello is DUMELA, to a man you say DUMELA RRA, ( Rra means sir) and to a lady you say DUMELA MMA ( Mma means madam)
@trivagravia48372 жыл бұрын
I think you failed to acknowledge the Kalangas....not everyone speaks Setswana in Botswana.
@tshololorraine2 жыл бұрын
@@trivagravia4837 Kalanga are also Batswana and they speak Setswana. Setswana is taught in school from primary to secondary. “With a few exceptions “ included” the Kalanga, Bayei, Bambukushu , Baherero, Basarwa, Basubia, Bakgalagadi etc

Gaborone is very modern and beautiful. Please find a local to help you with pronunciation of "Gaborone", because the way you say it, changes the whole meaning of the name. Gaborone was a chief of Batlokwa tribe in the 1800s. I am not from Botswana, but my ancestors are the decedents of Batlokwa clan whom some moved to Limpopo province in South Africa and became part of Bapedi as we know them today. Hence there is a place called Botlokwa in Limpopo, not far from the border of Botswana.

@@viroswa Unlike English, our languages re phonetic. you cant change that, even if you are a foreigner. For example, you can say "noka" , it can mean three different things depending of how you say it. pronunciation is key in our languages

What am selling you my brother is to have a change for the better to bring about good government tribalism has to be out the way religion should stay in ou houses and churches and mosque we should tolerate disagreements be the citizens of the country before our own tribes without that we are doomed for never ending conflict. Botswana implemented laws that forbidden religious discrimination tribal discrimination and centralized everything to the governments at the same time encouraging different tribes to work together am from Botswana but mentaly I have told myself am a black person first after that I consider myself African second after that am a motswana after that last then I can talk about my tribe so when I visit Somalia I will be a black person African then I can share with my brothers and sisters where I come from in Africa but I would not act like a stranger in Somalia because they are just like me

Dee, the 3 men statues are the three Chiefs from Botswana tribes who went to England in 1890 to negotiate with the Queen so that Botswana is not given to the Cecil John Rhodes' British South Africa Company nor to Southern Rhodesia. They wanted Botswana to remain a British protectorate. As a result Botswana which was then known as Bechuanaland Protectorate remained as a British Protectorate until independence. Khama III was the grandfather to Sir Seretse Khama who became our first president at independence in 1966.

Lol, I take offense as a Namibian. Botswana got independence in 1960s if you want to call it Independence since they begged to be colonised at the first place. Yet, their Infrastructure is not developed. Rwanda despite the 1996 genocide with no resource is buiding and developing faster than Botswana. And google the 10 richest people in Botswana, not a single Motswana make the list. The richest people in Botswana are Arabs and Indians immigrants who naturalised. Now tell me who owns Bostwana? Lol,tleast South Africa and Namibia have blacks in their list. The only country that truly deserves credit in mainland Africa is Rwanda that country is trying to utilize the little they have.
