So far, I've had a great impression of Bottega Veneta's leather selection in their luxury goods. While at luxury price tag, this bag comes with top of the line leather and thoughtful construction (it was difficult to take apart).

That's so nice to hear! About Bottega I mean. They released something recently, not a product but 'statement', that they will have a "lifetime" warranty for their bags, if they break or damage. I love love love that you are doing these sort of videos. A lot of people are in the branded goods for the brand, but there are a big number of people who wanted to know how much actual worth are they getting with their money spent in terms of leather. I am a big fan of leather and i love supporting the independent leather craftsmen, but often i find their finishes lacking, especially when it comes to bags or shoes. Yet i dont find the materials worth it when it comes to branded goods but their finishes are good. Fossil is one of the brands that gives pretty good leather for that price points, with pretty okay finishes. I have a few bags from Longchamp, their full leather bags are okay, but at an elevated price point.

@@Maybe.Its_You there are so many that i love, especially veg tanned leather. My favourite is a Fossil leather satchel bought with my first salary 12 years ago, it was the perfect shape and size. I travelled everywhere with it. It looks awesome due to the patina, but because it became so soft, it doesnt hold its form anymore and is slouchy, and pools into a puddle when i put it down. Perhaps a inner bag will make it look better. At this point, I hold it to feel comfort and confidence rather than for style, it’s like an old bolster.

Exactly. They have well paid designers and creative involved in coming up with their designs and maintaining brand integrity. They also need to price it to compete with other luxury brands. If they dropped their prices their brand would also drop to a lower ‘tier’ in the Luxury market beside Kate Spade and Coach. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but that’s probably not how they want to position their brand. We have to think about fashion like we do art in a lot of cases, a painting is not priced based on just the raw materials and time of labour, it’s the vision and the artist (brand) that gives it its value.

Ever since I saw a Lady Dior in the same fabric as a book tote I just said wow fashion companies are like financial institutions now. Lol - The genius of creating a product with such an easy material to produce since it’s all made on a loom and then just cutting it in the shape of a shopping bag. $0 on lining, hardware etc and it’s still as expensive if not more than so many full leather bags! Just like Nike investing heavily in the creation of fly knit year ago - fabric bags are the real money makers because they don’t even require high craftsmanship.

120 dollars for labor is way too cheap. For this bag to be conceived and sold, it has the work of the craftsperson of course (which alone I would already put as more than this), but also the designers (specially), the marketing team, the store vendors (or ux/ui designers + developpers if you bought it online), photographers of the collection, models who posed with the bag... And also probably a bunch of other people I forgot. Of course one bag alone is not supposed to pay all this people, but the costs of the whole chain is diffused into every product. If this makes it up for the luxury price tag, not necessarily, but it's not equivalent to the same bag being recreated by a single craftperson (even more so if they didn't design the bag).

The strips of leather being woven normally are much narrower, making much more work. I have read that Bottega Veneta has said that the intrecciato of each bag needs to be done by a single person. If a person is partway through a bag and then falls I’ll or goes on vacation, the bag waits for that person’s return. If that is the case, then your estimate for labor may be ‘way low.

I think we should include the work of the designer into the cost of the whole bag, we are in the end paying for a well designed and pretty to look at product. Firstly someone needs to design the product, then we need to include the cost of the material and then the actual craftsmanship. That bag is art in a way so the artist mustn't be forgotten about.
@lizard8694
@lizard8694 Жыл бұрын
I can see that adding a few hundreds to the bag, but thousands? And they sell the same design over and over, so they could add $250, sell 10 bags for $500 and make $2500 off the design alone, $5000 altogether. Instead they're making $22,500 off selling 10 bags. And I assume they probably sell more than that of one design of the bag. I suppose I can see this bag being sold for $1000 as reasonable, but I really can't see myself spending more than $100 on a bag. I get it'll last a lifetime, but I think I'd rather change bags every year at least than use the same few for forever. Even if I buy a $50 bag twice a year for 20 years, that's still $2000, less than this one bag.

I'm not a leather or accessory designer, but I am interning at a high-end small designer clothing brand and it really shocked me how many costs and people are needed even for a small indie brand. Not only do you have the design team, but there's the production team, PR/social media team, IT, photographers, photoshoot models, fit models, pattern cutters, pattern makers, pattern graders, sample makers, QC, and of course the factory workers. Plus there's the materials, machinery, shipping, etc. costs, and every single design often has to be remade from scratch (which means you have to have the design/production/cutting/patternmaking/grading/sample making teams redo all the work and rebook the fit models, plus using up more materials) multiple times before the finished product is released, and many of the garments go through multiple factories because many factories don't have certain machines or people trained to do certain techniques. I imagine (other than certain things like fit models, size grading, etc.) that making a designer bag is a similar process and that there are way more hidden costs than just the lambskin and sewing.

Just discovered this guy. I’m loving these videos. I am in the market for a high end bag but I don’t want to default to Louis Vuitton because it just seems so played out. Now I have a little impartial opinion on bag quality to help me make a decision.

I think this brand is very centered on their leather products and that’s why the leather and construction was of quality. Brand i would like you to try are coach- leather centered but more affordable, and diesel. Diesel is a fashion house that is centered around leather and using it in new ways. I am in no way a leather professional but I do really enjoy a good leather bag. Thanks for the great content!

That’s why I buy only unbranded leather bags from local craftsmen, even if the design is ‘inspired’ by something a big brand sells.

Yes the color of the D U P B A G Y is beautiful and it is a great decision, maybe one day they will add feet and straps. It would be nice to have a bigger bag during the colder months when we have to store gloves, beanies, scarves, etc…

There's still marketing, shop and employees, transport and other costs. So, perhaps it shouldn't cost $2,500, but it's also not just $250.

It’s true that Bottega has ALWAYS been known for TRUE leather quality & craftsmanship, AND yet this guy is STILL making such a valid point on the extremely ridiculous pricing. I think most of us at some point have just tried to tell ourselves that these bags were of the quality in proportion to their cost when we know we’re just paying for the brand name 😬🙈🙊🙉🙀😹

Eh, yes and no. He's not counting design, pattern drafting, QC and distribution type stuff, nor rent or utilities for facilities to design, make, package and ship them from, nor marketing costs. He's JUST talking the bare minimum cost of materials and assembly itself and that's coming to 250 already. Keep in mind that with almost ANY physical product, let alone ones that are produced and sold in relatively small quantities, that eveb without any other costs, that 250 then has to be at LEAST doubled to get the Wholesale Price, and then (if it is sold through a store they don't own directly or that has extra costs) generally doubled again to get the Retail Price (MSRP). Unless something like quantity or materials change, the Wholesale Price HAS to let them, given enough sales, cover ALL costs associated with making the item, including design stages and any testing, and still actually make a profit. If they only sell through their own stores (not familiar with the brand so I wouldn't know) then the profit margin is able to be a bit higher obviously, but. If this were like most high end brands - sold in other stores - you can't not have a discounted "wholesale" price or stores won't be able to try to sell it for a profit. So, you're already looking at something that should, by normal standards, be priced over $1000 retail MINUMUM, or else the original company wouldn't be able to design, make and distribute them, without going under. In other words: t's $250 to purchase the supplies and MAYBE pay for assembly, but if that's all you paid for, you would have nothing to assemble, nowhere to assemble it in, nowhere to store it before sale, no way to market it, etc. So all that considered... if you like the design, that's a not unreasonable price. Expensive? Yes. Especially from my perspective since that's more than a single 2 week paycheck... but for real leather in good quality put together well, in a color and style you like? Not unreasonable. It's just unfortunate that this kind of thing isn't a "slight" luxury for the average worker, but utterly unreachable for many on anything other than secondhand market at best. Like trust me, I would love to not have to use plastic crap or cheap thin fabrics for my clothing and bags, but Fast Fashion being the default means that's the widely accessible option until I actually get skilled at sewing 😅 which on the Making Clothing and Bags level, is gonna be a while.

I'm kind of glad to see Bottega still preserves the quality that made them famous in the first place. They're overpriced bags because it's a luxury brand, but at least they're well constructed and with good materials. Regardless, I'm not rich or stupid enough to drop 2K+ on a single item when there are many craftsmen and craftswomen who make incredibly stunning and high quality products for justified and fair prices (and tend to be less flashy too, which is good for the every day wearer, don't want to be wearing very on the nose brands to work or they might think you're doing a little too well).

Because the bags are collectable and also to make sure the brand reputation isn’t ruined they use the chips to authenticate them. Like art work.

My hometown in Italy is where they make them. My aunt works for them now, and I worked for them when I lived in Italy. I love their leather. Vicenza is known for the leather work. It is definitely expensive though. That is one of the cheapest purses. 😅
