Blues music was influenced by West African music passed down by enslaved people from West Africa, as well as European-style folk music passed down by European immigrants to the U.S. The harmonica was invented in Germany as a piano tuner and it reached the U.S. via German immigrants. Little Walter was a famous Black musician who revolutionized its use in Blues music. It’s funny how an African American contributed to the modern music of his ancestral homeland.

The Blues’ journey from Africa to America is well documented. Back in the late ‘90s Martin Scorsese dedicated the complete first episode of his documentary, The Blues, to its African roots. Corey Harris, a modern African American blues man, narrated. It was eye and ear opening to hear the sounds of traditional African music in relation to what we call The Blues. It IS The Blues, was, and ever shall be.
