The KZ440 was my first bike. My neighbor gave it to me (in pieces). I spent a few months searching local junk yards to find the missing pieces (this was pre-internet). Bought a service manual, and learned how to work on motorcycles with that bike. Finally got it all complete and back together. Ran great and was a joy to ride. I rode it for about ten years, then finally sold it to a teenage kid who was looking for his first bike. Then I started collecting and restoring KZ1000s.

Story time. Back in Soviet Russia, a nuclear power plant was on the brink of meltdown. All the plant operators were at a loss as how to stop it. They called in a specialist. He got off the helicopter and he was lead down into the main control room of the plant. He looked over all the valves and buttons for a bit, then turned one knob. The plant returned to normal operation. 2 days later, the Soviet government received a bill for 500,000 rubles. They sent an officer out to question the specialist as to why he charged them so much for merely turning 1 knob. He replied: because I knew which one to turn. Value is not always merely found in how much you do, but how much you know.

Found your channel recently, and had to subscribe, been going through the back catalog of videos and loving all the content. My first motorcycle was a 1978 Kawasaki KZ400/440... bought it in 1994 for $100, clean title and "Didn't run." Spent the winter tearing it down in my 3rd floor apartment (had 2 bedrooms, two bathrooms) - one bathtub was the recipient of many parts and component cleaning sessions. Taught myself to rebuild the carbs, change the fluids, replaced the brakes, new battery, and two tires, it ran like a dream. I rode it year round for three years as my daily commuter vehicle. I miss that little bike.

Back in the mid to late 70's throgh the 80's there was a lot of demand for these sub 500cc bikes . I've had a '78 CB400 and a 87' GS450L . There were tons of them , they could be made to go fast , quicker than the 500 triumphs and way more reliable and a good number got fairings and saddlebags/trunks . They are Great Bikes ! the KZ's were a bit faster and at 40HP it was more powerfull than either of the 400's I had ( 28HP best ) . Was enjoyable seeing one of these running again and good to know it was a simple fix on a bike with a good price . Thanks again for another great episode and keep up the great work and wishing all of you many years of safe and fun riding .

I have owned the same model KZ440LTD for about 25 years, as one of several bikes. I think about selling it from time to time, but it is such a sweet running, comfortable, easy to ride bike that I can't part with it. I have a 1000cc Beemer, and several other smaller bikes, but the KZ440 is the perfect commuter and around city motorcycle. The low seat height and big padded king/queen seat is cushy. It can do 100mph, and the 6spd trans means that it isn't frantic at highway speed. You got a great deal on a fine machine.

Tip: if you have a stuck float on a gravity fed carbureted bike and banging on it with a screwdriver handle or wood end of a hammer doesn't fix it then undo the fuel line and push 19-20 psi of air through the line, it will remove any debris that might be stopping the needle from seating and also force the needle to start moving in case it was just hung up......

I have an 81 KZ440 LTD belt drive with 605 actual miles on it. When I get to 800 miles it will need the initial belt adjustment. Bought it new in Montana for about $2200 and before I even licensed it I took a transfer to Minnesota and promptly bought a Suzuki GS850. My wife said to keep the KZ for her to ride. Never happened. Then said hang onto it for our sons to ride. That also never happened. Now 40 years later I'm trying to decide if it's worth putting the money into getting it running again for me to ride. It's a beautiful bike and in great shape except for rust in the tank. And your auction bike started up better than this one ever did. Always cold blooded and took a while to warm up.

Brings back bad memories. Third bike was a KZ440. Worst bike I ever owned. Even the Kawasaki dealer could never get it to run right for more than a day or two. Mechanic told me the carbs were not a good match to the engine for some reason, which caused it to be nearly impossible to keep tuned. Enjoyed a few months of hesitation, bucking, stalling and trips to the shop for tweaks. Sold it for less than I bought it for. Next was an 82 CB750 Custom. Best transition ever....

Apart from that it was in nice original condition, It runs now, the air filter box was missing, try find one of those, just unobtainable, But it is a nice reliable ride, gas and go.

Rode it for awhile the only real issue I ever had with it was the carb diaphragms cracked on it on apparently a common problem I remember they were like a 100.00 for the pair back in 1983 it was like crazy money to me, so I tried patching them well needless to say never found a glue that would hold up to gas so I ended having to buy them from Kawasaki. It was a great bike though really light. My third bike was a brand new Honda 550 Night Hawk talk about fast bike that gets no respect that bike was beast quick and fast shaft driven I had it to 138mph once and it had more to go but was enough for me...

I got my first bike about a year or so ago, just before all the covid stuff popped off. Bought is a strong word though lol. I saw a guy listing a beat up Honda pc800 on FB marketplace. It sat through a few NY winters outside so it wasn't in great shape. The main thing though, it fired right up. Get this, I traded a Mosin Nagant rifle that I paid 89 bucks for at a gun show for this bike, title and all. All it needed to run was new tires, clutch plates, plugs and wires, and brake and clutch bleed. The rest of my winter was spent pulling off dry rotten plastic. I basically ended up turning the bike into a rat but I'm OK with that. It runs great and for an old safe queen rifle that I spent less than a hundred on I'm not complaining

Went with a friend to buy one of the 1996 CZ 125 Cagiva period bike (the chrome quality took bit of a dive when Cagiva took over CZ!!) about 15 years ago. That was spotless but didn't start, so we offered £50 and the owner said, "Deal". It hadn't run for 2 years. Just stopped one day, so the owner said. We trailered it home. I removed the ignition switch and plugged the loose ignition spade connector (that I'd spotted when looking the bike over before we'd bought it!!) and it fired up first kick. Always approach any fault with anything thinking, "How would I sabotage this to make it not work like it is now if it was working fine before hand??".

Blast from the past, my first street bike was a 1978 KZ650 in 1980. Back then the KZ1000 was the BOSS. Guys went crazy with chrome and headers. Man those bikes used to rip around! There were 5 or 6 of us that used to race around on them. My girlfriend back then saw the bike and wanted to go for a ride, I didn't buy it to cart her around so I took her up onto the highway and goosed it up to about 100mph and she never asked to ride again. I always felt bad about that. Flash forward 20 some odd years later and she hits me up on facebook, she sees pics of me all over the country on my Ultra Classic and tells me she never got on another motorcycle after that ride, so I tell her to go for a nice ride on the Ultra with me, promised I wouldn't go over the speed limit, she agreed and I took her for a nice day in the country and she loved it, chicks love riding Ultras. Can you guess where we wound up at the end of the ride? Lol.

I wish there would be more content like this nowadays. I have so many weird things I could offer for a great little bike like this.

My first bike was an LTD440 belt drive that I switched to sprocket and chain and rode until I joined the Navy! My brother liked it so much he bought a LTD 750

Your next super super cheap bike you get I want to fly down to you buy it and ride it back home to northern Michigan. (Mackinaw city Michigan) it’s a 800 mile trip. Good footage. I’m also a gear head so it can be patched together to make sure it makes its Up here. Think about it. lol god bless.

I had a red one in the 80s. Tons of fun on my first bike.

Here in austria in the boarding school one of the first things we learn is that a engine needs 5 things to run, fuel, air, spark, compression and timing. I also heard simplified version with spark, fuel, and air, but for you to just dont mind about the air is not that good in my opinion. Timing ok, thats not often the problem but we had so many briddle air filters / clogged air filters etc. to repair in my workshop that i would check air before compression. Espacially if you live in a region with a lot of mice.

You can't have compression without air...

Best motorcycles I've owned were an 83 honda custom cx650 and an 84 honda magna 700.... Love the 80's bikes but unfortunately I don't have a garage at home to get one up and running.
