KidRiver The miners are receiving only 2.413% of the gross markup. Less than 3%. For the amount of work they’re doing. They should at least make 15% (About $621,540 USD). Gem cutters make salary, about $36,000 in the US. The company just cashed in profit.

My question is if you could see that the opal looked to be running from long end to long end, what would possess you to cut ACROSS it??? Doing so almost guaranteed that you'd cut THROUGH any large pieces, decreasing their value immensely. Which is EXACTLY what you did! Imagine what that large, center, stone would've been worth had it remained intact!! Then add the others and you have a LOT more than $100,000!!! Talk about "making your season"!!!

I adore opals and watch every show and all the good KZbin Channels on it, Black Opal Direct and Pulitzer Opal being the best 2, I'd love to try mining it or even better carving it but I'm too greedy, I'd end up using 40,000 Dremel tips to ensure I got every listen tenth of a Carat from the opal instead of just grinding it down on a spinning wheel. I reckon most of us viewers are the same. I mentioned this to Pulitzer Opal once and he said basically the only way you can work with Opal effectively and efficiently is if you're willing to grind away some of the opal whilst trying to find the best face. He's right, but I'm greedy and cowardly, I'd end up slicing off the edges rather than grinding them.

Nah this isnt diamonds. Alot of people dont get opal or how its valued. It isnt cut up into many pieces. A single opal is a single opal regardless of size. Not all opal is supposed to be cut and polished down into perfect shapes like diamond. All opals are different and irregular shapes. Most opals in their finished final polished forms even still consist of boulder. Not all opal is for wearing some is ornamental. Hence why opal is the most complex complicated stone to value.

Why don't you soak a rock in vinegar or something like that to dissolve the rock..rather than cut it up and it loose it's value??? I see all these videos of rocks being sliced and diced.. and the way you hack out a piece from the sides of walls... you make me cringe.

Aaron is trying so hard to achieve his dream, he works so hard for it. I hope he gets what he is striving for. Poor bugger needs a good break with lots of opal. Go for it.
