Producer/Engineer Clay Blair gives us a tour of his Studio 'Boulevard Recording', formerly known as 'Producer's Workshop', where Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered.

My friend and legendary producer Shelly Yakus recently hit me up and told me: 'Hey Warren, for your next studio tour, you need to check out Clay Blair's studio 'Boulevard Recording'.
boulevardrecording.com
And I'm so glad I did!
Formerly named 'Producer's Workshop', this studio has a lot of history: Pink Floyd's masterpiece 'The Wall' was overdubbed, mixed and mastered at this studio, Steely Dan tracked their last two records 'Aja' and 'Gaucho' there, they had legendary artists like Ringo Starr, Alice Cooper, Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Blink 182, as well as all former Beatles members.
Pink Floyd producer Bob Ezrin described this studio as “acoustically perfect“ and “one of the greatest recording rooms ever built“.
In this video, Clay tells us how 'The Wall' was recorded and mixed, and gives us a complete tour of the studio, including the live room where they tracked 'The Wall'.
I have to admit: I felt a bit like a kid in a candy store! Every great vintage hardware unit which plugin designers like to model: Clay has the original one. Plus a huge collection of guitars, pedals, amps, vintage organs (used on Beatles records) and microphones!
You'll get to see a beautiful studio, get tons of great tips on how to put your favourite plugin emulations to use, and learn a lot about music history, I hope you enjoy it!
Thank you so much for having us Clay, it was a blast!
Many Thanks,
Warren

From a Jeff Porcaro interview, he was asked to play on the song 'Mother" as no one else could grease the drums through the vocal phrasing, which is in an odd time. Another note, Jeff spoke of 'Sound City studio' just about all you had to do was set your drums up and you got a great sound. All of these 'use and do what you know' in so many venues are so magical in the sonic vibe ie quality. Thank You both for this. Smile.

Fantastic video! It is awesome to go back in time and get an inside into one of the most iconic studio's of that time. What is really amazing to hear is that Clay mentions a Quantum Audio Labs console being used. I think that was a QA-3000 of which we believe only 4 were ever made. One that was at the Producers Workshop with Bob Ezrin, another one that was in Studio 55 with Richard Perry, 1 that was in Nashville with Ray Stephens and 1 custom build for Wayne Jernigan at Reflection studio in Charlotte NC. Many amazing records were made on those consoles. Bob Ezrin, mixed The Wall, Rumours, worked on Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho, Alice Cooper, Chicago. Richard Perry recorded and mixed Destiny of the Jacksons 5, Stevie Nicks, Toto by Toto, Neil Diamond, Pointers Sisters, and many more. Then over here in NC, Don Dixon and Mitch Easter worked on tons of records on the Quantum at Reflection. A friend of mine had an old analogue studio that was unused for a long time and among the gear was the old 1976, 30 channel, 24 bus, quad Quantum QA-3000 that was custom build for the Reflection studios in NC. We have been restoring it now for almost 2 years and are now starting to use it on sessions. It is lovely to see such an incredible sounding console being brought back to life. Thanks for your lovely video!

Hey Warren, interesting stuff about running the Al Smart ‘Stereo verses split mono’ The SSL quad compressor, is actually split mono (individual side chains) x 4, with one set of time constants, so the Al smart is flexible to use each side for separate tasks, the Quad has the best of all worlds across the mix… so you’ll have always been hearing your console comp split mono, with a single set of controls.

Tape really is just amazing on vocals especially. He's right. Russell Elevado when working on Dangelo's record would put a tape machine in dangelos hotel room on tour, because they were both so against laptops or anything else on vocals! Everything Elevado does is to tape. Talk about altec's and esoteric gear. If you could ever visit with him in his studio that would be absolutely special.
