The pilot could fire the guns. At 22 degrees elevation the guns could fire forward and clear the propeller. If you check the cockpit you will see the pilot had a spade grip trigger. No one expected Germany to defeat France. As a result the plane was never expected to fight enemy fighters. It was an interceptor - not a fighter. It also was a great EW support aircraft for bomber command. P94 was a single seater with 12 forward firing guns in the wings.

There is an account of a Defiant shot down by an Me109 over England landing and the Me109 came over on a pass and the gunner managed to shoot the 109 down from the still-functioning turret.

The Defiant was actually a very sound design and gave Stirling service in many roles until virtually the end of the war. The fact that the concept around which it was designed was unsound wasn’t the poor old kite’s fault. Also, a ‘superb’ night fighter may be over egging it somewhat. ‘Brilliant stop gap until the Beaufighter and Mossie came on line’ would be more accurate. It’s always been a puzzle to me that the tactics used by night fighter Defiance were nothing new (used in WW1 against Zeppelins) yet their use by the Nacthjager with Shrage Musik seemed to take Bomber Command completely by surprise.
