Sam and I spend 2 days on Little Saganaga (Little Sag) in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. For a change, we have layover days without rain! So, we're able to get out and explore the very interesting lake. We find a large flock of Mergansers, revisit the campsite we stayed on 5 years previous and, of course, are serenaded by loons.

There you go, brave as could be dumping siracha on your Ramen. I do believe I heard a little cough on the first taste, LOL. Such a beautiful day, that day of calm water and clouds. No sunburn and great for paddling. I love how the clouds reflect on the water on still, cloudy days. Lots of great views and photos. Another masterpiece! Just what I am longing to see and feel hopefully the wilderness access is allowed in a short time.

The Ramen on its own just needed something more (even for my delicate palette). Licking that siracha off my fingers was an experience I'll try to avoid in the future though. Once it was in the Ramen, it was just the trick. The reflections were wonderful that day. I'm hoping access opens up soon too although I do understand the reasoning. It's not about the people in the wilderness, it's about the communities that serve those people. I've made great progress on part 8 so it should be up next weekend.

Larry, Excellent video, just love the quiet opening and morning wake up scene. This brings back great memories of my two day stay on that site a couple years ago. I see someone used for a bench, that live jack pine log that someone had freshly cut down just before I got there. I kept a 1/4" slice from it and counted the rings when I was home, it was over 150 years old. Wow, thanks for checking out that site next door, I paddled up to it but thought the landing was too terrible to even go up and look at it!

Thanks Bryan. wow, 150 years old. And, someone decided it needed to be cut down :( . I, in turn, thank you for checking out Elm Lake since I didn't :) . That landing at that campsite was terrible. I was determined to check the campsite out. Yes, I can be stubborn at times -- or, so my wife tells me. I prefer the word "persistent". LOL

I think I love your evening paddles and early mornings most on your videos, everyone makes me jealous though.
@nibimocs
@nibimocs 4 жыл бұрын
That's what I enjoy the most myself. I need to start taking sequences in the evenings like I do in the morning (when I can't paddle). 2 problems though 1) I'm usually running out of steam in the evenings and 2) that's when Sam most likes to sit on my lap. Sometimes, I even miss getting sunset photos because I'm cuddling him.

Great video, glad you like the Ramen Rescue. Makes a good lunch. I will make some for lunch today in fact after watching your video. Wife and I also like Trailtopia's Triple Berry Crisp. Thanks for the video!

Wonderful, as usual! I appreciate how you often use photography's "rule of three". I also enjoy the "thumbs-up" at meal time. :) Thanks for all the work you put into these videos.

Thank you Steve! The rule of thirds is so ingrained that I hardly even realize I'm doing it any more :) ... once in a while, rules are made to be broken though. You're welcome... When I get to the point where I can't go anymore, I'll have lots of video to watch and reminisce over :D . Thanks for watching & commenting! Hope you're staying safe and healthy.

I don't understand why you have to babysit your solar charging a powerpack. Couldn't you set it up and then take a paddle?
@nibimocs
@nibimocs 4 жыл бұрын
That's what I initially thought too... It takes 6-8 hours to fully charge my power pack from my solar panel IF there are perfectly clear skies AND the panel is kept perpendicular to the sun. Of course, the sun doesn't stay in one position (in fact changes very quickly in the morning and evening) so the panel has to be re-aimed as the sun moves. Plus, you have to make sure that shade doesn't move across the panel. It's amazing how much difference just a few angles can make. I also had a few batteries to charge that day so was swapping them out as they filled up. As it turned out, even with me babysitting the whole affair, it still took all day to get that power pack (and the batteries) completely charged. If I'd gone out, even for a short paddle, it wouldn't have charged completely.

Off topic a little, as I know this is an August trip . I was wondering what is the earliest, in the season, you've paddled the BWCA ? First part of June for us.

There was one year that I did a trip at the end of April. It was up (heading south) the Little Indian Sioux River. Lakes were still frozen but the river was open. I've done several mid-May trips. Latest trip was the beginning of November one year. That one, I headed downstream on the Little Indian Sioux. Lakes were still open. Came out in one heck of a snow storm though. I've also done a couple of day trips in November. It's fun to hear the sound the forming ice along the shore makes when your wake hits it.

Finally got some time to watch. Great video as always. Those overcast and calm days in the BWCA are surreal. I had a solo trip a couple of years ago that had similar weather as you experienced. It was an odd sense of impending severe weather that never materialized. Thanks as always, Matt

Hi Matt! Glad you found some time to watch! It sure made for a nice paddle even if some of those video clips ended up dark and gloomy looking. I'm so glad the severe weather never materialized. Thanks for watching!

1:00 - Nice opener. 5:30 - I think the burned over areas are beautiful in their own way. 7:45 - What, you don't want to scale a cliff face to get to a campsite? 9:30 - Yeah, I kinda like the site, except for the no tent pads of course. 12:30 - Seems like there should be a portage there. Hmmm. 20:00 - Guess it beats not going at all? Maybe not. 25:45 - Sam's such a good sport. Hope he can make it on a few more trips.
@nibimocs
@nibimocs 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mark Yes, the burned over areas are definitely beautiful especially after they've had a chance to come back. Biggest problem with camping in them is the lack of shade. The site had a lot going for it. The landing and lack of tent pads were definitely negatives. There is a portage there, sort of. Because it doesn't get much use, it's overgrown and tough to find. @MNMostly did basically the same trip I did about 2 years before and posted a series of videos (he even used 3 of the same campsites as I did). He managed to bushwhack the portage route back to Elm Lake. I was in the right place looking for the portage, just not willing to attempt the bushwhack. Yes, even being weather bound and experiencing a strong weather front, it's definitely better than not going at all. I had a great trip in any case. Just a minor set back. Sam should definitely be able to get a few more in... As always, thanks for watching and commenting. Appreciate the commentary.

So so peaceful Larry. Very different from 2015 I must say. One advantage of a storm VS beautiful August days like that and that is there are no flies to irritate you or Sam. Wow, August day 8 was a dream. All the best over there. Mark

We were in the Boundary Waters earlier in August with our 8 year old granddaughter on her first trip. Love Ramen (introduced to it in Korea in 1971). We always use 1 cup of water so it’s more of a sauce rather than soup. We love Sam.
