You will get the original custard tarts in Lisbon. Worth standing in line. The Portuguese took their recipe to Ayutthaya and Macau and other faraway places, which explains why they are enjoyed everywhere.
@OnePackWanderers2 жыл бұрын
Ahh, that does explain it. Someone else said the tarts were maybe a display of Portugal’s wealth, too, with all the sugar and dairy. Interesting how they ended up being, arguably, the biggest international culinary symbol of Portugal. Is there a certain spot for the tarts in Lisbon, that you would recommend? 😊

@@OnePackWanderers Pastel de Belém is where you go. It's where the custard tarts got their start... in 1837. Also, don't forget coffee and cod fritters in the historic coffee shop in the main square in Lisbon. It's one of the oldest cafes in the world.

And caught up! Watched your 1st Korean vlog because I just wanted to see someone travel through Korea, and liked it so much I started at the beginning. It now seems strange when other KZbinrs don't do 'Tia for scale', but there can only be one Tia, so their loss. Not a biker myself, but really enjoyed the bike trips in Thailand and Vietnam. Also impressed at your positivity (or at least level headedness) when things go wrong. You seem to embrace the 'Don't worry about the small stuff' ethos. @@OnePackWanderers Thanks! I am so looking forward to my trip. Unfortunatly not every country in Asia is open yet. I planned a visit to both Taiwan and Japan to be included in this trip, but those countries still don't offer freedom of individual travel or even access to tourists. So I will be flying in to Thailand as tickets between Europe and Asia are typically cheapest. From there i'll be roaming through SE Asia. Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Philippines. Depending on the Covid situation, weather and what feels best. All in about 2 months. Nowhere near the OPW scale for time (not to be confused with the "Tia scale for height"). But anyway: In terms of spending time on the road:Yep, jealous of you guys, as ever. But before I leave for SE Asia I will be visiting the Western part of Germany. Which is not a major feat as it is a neighbouring country of where I live. Just get my car out and scoot over the border. It takes me less than 2 hours. Oh, the fun of living in a small country. I truly enjoyed your views of Porto. I visited Portugal before the pandemic. It is wonderful. I trust we'll be seeing a lot more of you. You have built up such a huge and loyal fanbase, we won't let you disappoint us now. But that will be hard. The quality of your work is such that we expect you to keep it at least at this level. The new mics and cam are a definite improvement. Have fun, keep safe and above anything else: stay healthy. You're the best! 😎😎😎😷😹👍👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏😻 And thanks for the personal message. My message landed exactly as intended.

Always forget to click the comment button to post... Porto is a nice city, but not my favorite...just wait till you see the others! :) Not a fan of the custard tarts, think they are way too sweet. I think Portugal wanted to show off their wealth and since sugar was a pricey item back in the day they put a lot of sugar into it. :)
@OnePackWanderers2 жыл бұрын
That's a really interesting observation about the display of wealth! It is so interesting how these things happen throughout history. Absolutely loving Portugal so far! It is extremely pricey this year, though. Even in comparison to some Spanish cities we have been looking at, Porto & Lisbon are 2-4x the cost. I suppose the world really missed visiting Portugal in particular, over the last 2 & 1/2 years! 😅
@darrylk8082 жыл бұрын
@@OnePackWanderers I went years ago and again for a 2nd time in 2019. The first time Portugal wasn't that well known so it was cheap. I thought it needed better marketing because it was wonderful. Thought it was the most under rated countries in Europe. Then years later it seemed to have upped the marketing budget.😁 Nice smaller cities around Porto and Lisbon like Braga, Coimbra, Sinatra, Cascais . Don't miss the Algarve, but this time of year it may be crowded and pricey. That's where Europe vacations in the summer. I would come back to it in the shoulder season.

We did mention some of the prices, if I recall correctly. Here they are: Hotdogs, beers, and fries - $14 Pastel de Nata and capuccino - $4.90 Bottle of port wine - $10 We had to be pretty frugal in Porto (and Portugal in general) because prices are really high this year for transport and accommodation. The hotel was $84/night for example, and that was the cheapest one with vacancy in all of Porto.
