This man completely exhibits how powerful the flute can be. This instrument isn't and has never been just a little fluff pretty thing to listen to. The flute can exude POWER as well as lilting beauty.

I so want to get another flute and start playing again. Long tones, scales, etudes, excerpts, pieces. Then at my age I hear this brilliant man and think to myself, "why even bother?" At my age I should be happily accomplished. I just want to fill my soul again with music. 😢

I absolutely LOVE how his sound just sings out. It's so vibrato and alive. In all registers. Those octave leaps are incredible. Not easy. Especially in rapid passages.

This man is absolutely AMAZING. I love his tone and how he makes every note speak. Especially with wide intervals. Not the easiest thing to do. His power and intensity are everything. He truly captures everything this work needs for a phenomenal performance. That cadenza, DAMN!! BRILLIANT!!!

Those 4th octave notes incredible and in tune as well. This man has definitely taken the flute to new heights of performance.

Francis it seems to me the answer is that no flute was played to this ability before. In this case we have the best instrument modern flute played with skill unmatched by past players, synergistically making possible this new standard of what can be done with a flute.

Magnificent. One of my favorite pieces of music. Maxim Vengerov gives a super human performance of this with the Chicago Symphony here on YT. I thought the bassoon player would fall forward. I think he listened to that performance. Tempos and style are very similar to MV’s.

i would not necessarily say, that this is the right direction.... I would rather pass down the Pahud's mindset to the next generations....
@dominicktravis61193 жыл бұрын
@@alhdgysz I agree. Even though this performance is insane technically, it lacked In musicality which should be passed down.
@alhdgysz3 жыл бұрын
@@dominicktravis6119 it's not just about musicality. It's about tone production too.
@dominicktravis61193 жыл бұрын
@@alhdgysz not every musician should strive to have the same tone as another. The most successful soloists are 100% unique from one another. Emmanuel Pahud is more soft while Denis is harsh. I personally am more harsh with the intense parts of the music and soft with the light parts of the music.
@alhdgysz3 жыл бұрын
@@dominicktravis6119 you are right, we shouldn't play exactly the same way. However if we pass on the Pahud tone production, we will have wider colour palette, and wider dynamic range. It is still the artist's job to interpret the music and make artistic choices.

I was listening to Barber's Violin Concerto just before this and wondering why couldn't he have written a flute concerto or two. Listening to this, I wonder why more composers didn't bother to. Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Brahms, Rachmaninov would have enriched the flute repertoire so much with their sound; granted the instrument has limitations but this performance here proves that it is capable of so much. Sadly this will remain a feature piece, won't get a place in concert seasons. I blame Mozart!
@city44976 жыл бұрын
I know this is 4 years late but the main reason is because the flute at the time could not handle such demanding repertoire. It was only after the Boehm model that the flute began to shape into what it is today.

Very little timbral range, very limited volume in the middle and low registers - the two main reasons.

It always looks to my like he plays with the flute offset to the left. Am I seeing that right? I have a big tear drop lip and have started playing offset as well and am hopeful that it is possible to create this fantastic a tone from that.
@michelleong27628 жыл бұрын
It's because his natural embouchure is very off center, my flute teacher played with him before and says you can see that his smile is not symmetrical. it's not wise to imitate unless you have the same natural offset as him

Reminds me a little of Rampal's embouchure. Look at Galway's embouchure over the years, it is migrating to the side.

In your opinion... exactly what do you think dynamics are..? (And by that, also the definition of the dynamic "piano")? I think he plays piano (dynamic) plenty of times...
@dasteufelhund8 жыл бұрын
Issac Stern. To name a few, the focus/speed of air, compliment of vibrato, shading of sound and lastly, volume of sound. You and I apparently hear how he phrased the rise and fall very differently. Dynamics to me, means how aforementioned come together to form overlapping color of sounds in the context of organized sound/music.
