Paris looks like it's going to be 2 teams of ITALY, NETHERLANDS, AUSTRIA, NORWAY and maybe SWITZERLAND or SWEEDEN counting the European qualification. But with all that, Brazil, Qatar... you'll have to be lucky and even pray Cuba doens't win the NORCECA. We'll see. And don't get me wrong I want this new USA teams to be in the olimpics, but I can't see it right now.

this title is an epic "did not age well". La Paz was a train wreck. Now, it tooks like Theo still has a tender ankle, and that could have been an issue in the Rd. of 16 loss. But how do we explain Tri/Chaim going 2 and Q, losing to a French team nobody's ever heard of.. maybe the 4th best French team? Troy thinks the "US has caught up" with the option game. It isn't the option game that is the problem, it is overall skill. It is a lack of toughness that comes from hard daily play. It is hitting errors. It is hitting right into the block over and over. Ooof. Hope I'm wrong. The real question is whether Tri and Troy actually believe these statements, or whether they're willingly entering into fantasy denial zone just to get them through the year. On a positive note, in last week's Mailbag Savvy was wondering that if she and Toni failed to get out of Qualis in the La Paz Challenge event (like what happened to Tri/Chaim), could she jump back into AVP Miami last minute. Turns out she and Toni not only made it out of Qualis, they beat everyone on the way to the Finals, only losing to TKN for Silver. I guess I know what Tri really meant... that the USA woman are going to have a great year on FIVB.

USA Women's volleyball relies on sheer numbers right now, i think the rest of the world will catch up and like AAU basketball for men's, it'll show that we get some good talent, but without huge cultural changes, the USA will fall behind in volleyball and basketball in the future. I'll check back in 2033.

@@Itstime1231 yes, that is true. Sheer numbers means your top ten out of ten thousand (women) are phenomenal. Top 10 out of 500 (men), not so much.... just Miles and that's pretty much it. For every Miles, there's ten women who can compete in FIVB from USA. Thousands of women are chasing college money, and there's only peanuts for the only hundreds of men who put in the same commitment. It's a numbers game as you say.

I think it's true to say that the rest of the world is improving quicker than the USA right now (in mens). For instance, the level of the 2nd Dutch team in La Paz was very impressive. That said, the US teams still seem to be slowing coming out of pre-season. I suspect they will improve noticeably within the next month or two.
