Located in the county of Lincolnshire, and around 15 miles north, and slightly west, of Peterborough, is the town of Bourne.
The town's name derives from Old English 'Burna', meaning stream. After the Norman Conquest, a motte and bailey castle was built here by nobleman Baldwin FitzGilbert. The castle fell into decline by the 14th century. All that remains of it today are earthworks.
In 1138, Baldwin FitzGilbert founded Bourne Abbey - an Augustinian priory. This lasted until 1536 when it was dissolved by Henry VIII as part of the Dissolution of the monasteries. The abbey church survived, and became the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, which is in use to this day.
In 1860 a railway station opened in Bourne. This was originally the terminus of a short branch line to Essendine in Rutland, which was then part of the East Coast Main Line. The station later became a junction, with additional services to various parts of the East Midlands and East Anglia. The station was closed to passengers in 1959. Today, public transport to Bourne consists of direct buses from Peterborough, Stamford, Spalding and various other nearby settlements.
In 1899 Raymond Mays was born in Bourne. Mays became a racing driver and a pioneering figure in British motorsport.
