Bournemouth beach incident | Police release man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter

The father has clearly stated a riptide pulled his daughter and her friends out to sea. Riptide is common there. I have no idea why the owner of a small pleaseure vessel would be arrested

That was my initial thought upon hearing about it. The fact that no one has mentioned riptides at all in the news coverage is the only reason I discounted it so far. Another possibility is wildlife - seasonal movements of certain jellyfish and other poisonous aquatic species mean that the unwary could come across such things before they even knew what had happened.

We now know. A small cruise ship, the Dorset Belle, has long operated from the pier. The lower level of the pier is used for fishing, and the arrival of the boat can wash people off the walkway. The vessel in now in Poole Harbour under arrest.

Riptides would explain the deep water. They can start very close to shore and before you know it you are being pulled out into the open sea by the current. If you don't swim perpendicular to the outgoing current you will end up exhausted and drown before you can be rescued. Beaches with riptides should be permanently closed - the danger is just too high of this kind of thing happening.

It was a spring low tide at that time so swimmers would of been further out than normal. The boat arrived or left at the time and caused enough of an issue to hurt people.

A group of them suffered with injuries, which was probably because of being caught up in waves crashing onto the pier.......maybe that 40 year old man was acting recklessly/selfishly through the group to get hold of a clear spot on the pier... Very sad outcome either way.

For all we know he may have been trying to rescue kids in trouble under the pier, misjudged it then inadvertently caused the death of 2 young people, not unheard of. Considering the police initially arrested him under suspicion of manslaughter then released him under investigation, seems quite plausible to me. I have no clue though, so little information on this.

@@VMM34 If his wash or bow-wave swamped swimmers it would be potentially negligent or reckless. For the police arrest a man very soon after the incident, they were clearly aware who he was and what his potential involvement is. It's negligence by the police that over 24hours passed before they impounded the vessel. They should refer themselves to the IOPC.
