Landing on water is a pretty neat capability but so far has been a significant design compromise. I think though that it should be possible to make a high performance plane water capable with a watertight fuselage and some kind of hydrofoil landing gear. Say a low wing glider style/Risen/Lancair 2 seater weighing 200kg and two small turbofan jet engines. With watertight dihedral wings it might balance naturally when at rest in water. Yet still able to do mach 0.7. Water landing capability is also a handy feature if doing transatlantic in case of emergency landing as opposed to immediately sinking and dying from hypothermia in a few minutes. even with an immersion suit, I imagine it's far more comfortable being in a dry cockpit than swimming in the atlantic when waiting a few days for a ship to pass by. Such a plane might also fly on unleaded fuel.
