As I've said before, while I don't own a Patrick James Eggle Macon, I do own a Nik Huber Orca 59. Very, very similar. I can say that compared to a Les Paul it's WAY different in how it plays and sounds. With that said, neither my Orca or a Les Paul is better. Just different flavors. And for the price of a Macon, while not cheap, could be a nice addition for a Les Paul owner who just wants to reach for something a little bit different from time to time. Or the Macon might be your choice OVER a Les Paul if you like the more modern appointments like a tummy cut and a comfort-carved heel. Worth at least checking out! Good on you Alamo Music for offering these!

I just played the hollow body Macon at this store yesterday…and it felt amazing! I own an R8, and an R9. And the Macon feels and plays better…..however, I will say, I was very surprised at how bright it sounded vs say the LP. Playability and feel…Eggle all day. Sound, I’d lean towards the LP for tone. Perhaps a pickup and/or pot swap would bring the Macon sound closer to the LP, but it’s all subjective. Great guitars either way. The store is amazing, and has excellent customer service! Very happy with the guitar stores in SA between Lark and this store. 🙏🏼👏

I don’t think you could go wrong with either one. In their own way they’re both simply superb 👌……… and personally I’d have the PJE. I just love the finish.

I just love that LP. So classic and beautiful. Incredible sound and Coopers playing is magical.

PJE is what I would go for personally. Attention to detail is impeccable with small builders like this.

Hey fellas, Gibson makes an access carve Les Paul. I also like that deluxe hanging on the wall behind you.

They're both amazing guitars... very close not only in physical appearance and accoutrements, but tone-wise. The LP may be more gutteral in the bridge positio, but not a lot. Both have luxurious clean tones. I'd have a difficult time choosing between the two, so, given all of Gibson's price increases, I'd probably choose to go with the sub-$6K Macon. It seems that I'm not the only one who's noticed that Chris"s playing gets better with each review. Astonishing! Keep it up, Chris! It may not be long before some well-known band or producer makes you an offer you can't refuse!

Patrick James Eggle made me a stunning Carved Top Macon. I also have a Custom Shop 60's Reissue. They're both amazing guitars. The Macon is lighter, more resonant, more comfortable, has better upper fret access and just looks like an absolutely top drawer boutique guitar. It just oozes class. The Les Paul just nails that vintage Les Paul tone. If I could only keep one I'd probably take the PJE. But it would be a wrench to part with either. Woth the Macon if you want neck binding that's an option. If you want an ebony, redwood or pau ferro fretboard that's an option. If you want a diffetent pickup set they will accomodate that. And yes, if you want your immaculate Macon to have a relic they'll do that as well. I got the Mojo 'Greeny' pickups which are out of phase in the middle position, 50's wiring and a 'blower' switch on the bridge tone control which bypasses the petentiometers and is superb for lead tones. I've onwned 30+ high end guitars. The Macon is the best of them. Patrick was great to deal with. The guitars are expensive, but compared to a Custom Shop R9, Private Sock PRS McCarty or a Nik Huber Orca they're a bargain. I'm lucky enough to have a PJE Drop Top 96. That's also sublime.

People hate it, but I really like seeing competition for the customer who wants a les paul. If Gibson is the only one allowed to iterate on this aesthetic, they're bound to get lazy

Even with the competition they’ve been lazy 😂

Im a sucker for gibson, i hate it but I admit it. I also love small brands. I prefer the overall sound of the macon, specially in the neck pickup (again, maybe because of the setup of both). I think I dig more the sound of the bridge pup of the R9. Aesthetically is a no brainer
@vanzantm10 ай бұрын
Chris - What were the setup changes you did for the Les Paul? Simple things like action adjustment of pickup height adjustment? Or more involved like Pot/Cap changes for Tone/Volume switches, etc?

Gibson les paul does have brass saddles the same as the eggle they're just nickel plated and the eggle has raw brass saddles

I find myself really liking the Gibson much more. It sounds cleaner and less muddy. In both the treble and bass .

the macon definitely sounds clearer. the les paul has way more mids. speaking for these examples.

Straight off the bat: both great, both too expensive for me by far. I prefer the back of the Eggle -- the carve, the look of the grain, the neck treatment. I actually prefer the front of the Gibson, with the bound neck, the more contrasted binding on the body, the burst, and the glossier finish. Can't ignore the power of the branding either. The Gibson is the real deal and it's hard to get around that, so if I had a choice, it would be the Gibson. But, I say, both are out of my budget. I have a standard style Epi; LP Tribute would be what I would stretch to from Gibson, maybe a second hand Studio.

Pat's instruments have that special "something". The quality of everything and the attention to detail is second to none. I have played them since I first came across a New York in1992. I have also been lucky enough to find a couple of early 90s Berlins, one of them being one of those legendary "it's lived under the bed for 20 years so is as new" - these are all gigged regularly. (You don't strap on a Berlin, you wear it - it becomes part of you, like no other guitar I have ever played). I recently acquired a second hand Macon Vintage model which sounds just phenomenal, and despite being at the lower end of the range, the quality and attention to detail is all there. It is an extremely good guitar. Pat is currently making me a Macon Special with a few custom tweaks - and that's what you get from a Boutique Luthier - personal service, absolutely top, top, top quality and also the guitar you really want. I can't wait to get to know it!

I think it’s a beautiful guitar but at that price point in your comparing it to the Gibson less fall anytime you gotta compare a guitar to a guitar go with the original I would definitely say Murphy Lab, Les Paul. I also feel that this guitar definitely has the grit to make it into somebody’s collection that wants to go off the beaten pathor stay away from main streams Guitar builders
