Funny thing many folks don't know is they make multiple different blade styles for bow saws... They make a "raker" style blade like you show in the video which is for freshly fallen green wood, and they make a "peg" tooth blade which is for dry seasoned wood or hard dense species of woods. I've seen some folks on KZbin in vids cutting 4x4's with a bow saw complaining about how poorly it performs when the raker style blade they have was never intended to cut dried dimensioned lumber... They also make a special blade for butchering carcasses and sawing bone, looks like a hacksaw blade.

Great video Dave! I always just used the pliers on my Leatherman to reset the teeth, but your method looks faster & probably safer too.

These are great informative videos on Bow Saws, you have a nice collection of videos that i really enjoy. If you don't have this already I would like to see something on Camp Security I get a little paranoid myself when I camp alone.

Hi Dave! Has been your fan for a LONG while now. Love and appreciate your videos a great deal. I would like to suggest a Request or a Challenge for you. Could you go into the woods for a whole week with only some basic equipment and document everything from start to the end. Setting up your camp, getting fire started (maybe using a primitive technique), with somebasic hunting - try and make it sustainable in a week. I would absolutely love a survival series like that! Much love!

Hey Dave great videos you are offering us for free. As temperatures drop down could you make a series where you make clothing shoes and gloves out of squirrel and rabbit skin (how do you prepare the skin and the fur?), only using the contents of your basic ten piece kit ? Taking these ten pieces into the woods may be manageable but often there is a lack of proper protection, especially when it comes to an unplanned long term situation. Grettings Christian

Nice. Do you think you could use the tent stake you made a few videos ago for the punch? Seems like the point would be small enough and you don't have to carry another tool with you. Thanks for the video

I am going to have to look around for a bow saw like dave uses I have wanted to buy one for a long time now. but like most modern day manufactured tools they are buld for speed and market not for good quality. I might look around craigslist or when winter is over start looking around some yard sales or flea markets.

Remember a lass put her hand alongside when starting a cut. Bowsaw jumped about and she dragged it across the back of her hand. No major damage but not a pleasant experience.

Have 3 bow saws 12, 20, 30" I still prefer my 20" bucksaw kit, take down, easy to pack and cuts better. Haven't figured out how to pack my 60" felling saw yet.

Dave, is there a limit to how many days you can spend in the luxury of a modern home before you find you must get out in the woods? What wears you out and to where to you retreat to recover?

and its important to set the right teeth to the right side, a saw thats set wrong doesn't really cut well, left cutting teeth set to the left, and right cutting teeth to the right, otherwise its worthless

your local hardware store might do it real cheap---and they can do it the right way. Keep two chains and swap them out as needed, take one in to get sharpened.
