Barnard Castle: • BARNARD CASTLE | GUAR...
Bowes Castle is a medieval fortress located in the village of Bowes in County Durham, England. It was constructed in the late 12th century, around 1171, by the powerful local landowner and military commander, Bernard de Balliol. The castle was strategically positioned to control the important Stainmore Pass, a key route through the Pennines, and served as a defensive stronghold during times of political unrest. Originally built as a motte-and-bailey structure, it was later replaced with a more substantial stone fortress.
Throughout its history, Bowes Castle witnessed various modifications and renovations, adapting to changing military technologies and strategic needs. During the 13th century, it played a role in border conflicts between England and Scotland. However, by the late medieval period, the castle's significance diminished, and it eventually fell into disrepair. Today, Bowes Castle stands as a well-preserved example of medieval military architecture, attracting visitors interested in exploring its historical significance and enjoying the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Hi Alessa it’s interesting this was a place to protect a pathway. Amazing it’s still intact after so long. I think they built things better back then. Thank you for all the awesome views and nicely narrated history. Glad it’s free to visit and yes I always picture how things were back then. Very nice video! 👍😊🇨🇦
