I was asked by a guy on one of my videos, how I master entry cuts and if I could provide any tips.... Sorry I forgot the name but I hope this will help you out and many others....
Also I added how different grinds act and what are benefits....
Hope that this helps out.
Enjoy

Thanks for providing the very helpful info and answering my questions around hand positioning on the handle. This makes perfect sense (now) and will help me prevent skate-back. I was closing my flute but not leveling the gouge during entry and still getting the skate-back. Love these ‘advanced’ videos as so much of what’s on KZbin is the same basics repeated every over and over.

Great tutorial, especially showing the angle of cuts on the bottom and end grain tearing. It really helps remove the mystery of the bottom cut. I have only been turning for a couple of years and have found, as you pointed out, there is no magic universal grind. I have watched most of the master turners and see that we all usually use more than one tool. It always comes down to the kind of wood, how it cuts and the shape we want. I love watching you and Richard work and can clearly see the advantages of the asymmetrical grind. Thanks again

Perfect timing on this for as I am now at the point of trying some different grinds on my tools. Currently testing the 40-40 which I liked for the inside on a bowl but not as much for the outside. I bought a specific bottom cut gouge but actually like better an old spindle gouge that I ground for doing bottom cuts. I am using scrapers there too. So far that perfect finish cut that doesn’t require some cleaning up is a bit elusive for me. And 1mm thickness- impressive. So now you did it to me again. I’m off to go practice.

Tomislav, when I am sanding the inside of the bowl, I get a streak in the end grain sides where the finer dust seems to stick and makes a streak, smooth, but noticeable. The usually happens with 220 or 240 grit. What am I doing wrong, or more specifically, what should I be doing to get it right. Wood species does not seem to matter. I use power sander for the inside, very similar to yours. Thanks in advance.

Great video Thomaslav, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. I have a question regarding sharpening my bowl gouges. When you sharpen a scraper the grinder develops a burr on the top edge of the scraper and the burr is what does the actual cutting of the wood. But on a bowl gouge that same burr it seems to me would be a hindrance to having a sharp edge on the gouge. Because the angle that the gouge contacts the surface of the wood it seems the burr would be equivalent to a blunt or dull edge on the gouge. Is this simply a misunderstanding on my end, or should I try to smooth the burr down with some light sandpaper or a slip stone.

Tamislav, You nailed it! Congratulations on producing such fine work. Thank you for this and all your videos. I’ve been turning just over a year. I switched to the asymmetric grind (from the 40/40 grind) several months ago thanks to Mr Raffan and you. It suits me. But I have felt I didn’t have it quite right yet. This video, especially at the clip beginning 27 minutes in, is where it finally clicked. The close-up and your explanation did the trick.

Great video. I am brand new at this. Maybe you explained it and I missed it but when you were talking about doing your entry cut to prevent skating of your gouge, once you had established your bevel and could open the flutes a little, what is the reason for lowering the handle? What would happen if you kept it level? Thank you.

When you are making those deep (1/2”) roughing cuts with the left wing at about 5 1/2 minutes in to the video, it looks like that cut is unsupported with the wing greater than 90 degrees to the wood and would be subject to a catch rolling the rouge over. I can see where you can get by with that on wet wood but not dry. Am I missing something? Maybe the camera angle.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 9 ай бұрын
Good point, dry wood can be more resistant but with powerfull lathe you can plow through, but its easier on wet wood for sure.... In regards the unsupported edge, the right wing is away from point of contact and if In this orientation I present the gouge it will catch..... The flute is around 10 o clock and left wing is supported 😀 hope that makes sense but I'll cover more in one of the next videos on gouges soon....

This was super useful Tomislav. Appreciate the detail you provided and the time you took to clearly present the entry approaches. You also reinforced one of the things I learned when I was starting out -- if one has the angles right and the bevel riding the work properly, it doesn't matter how fast you move through the work, the tool will remain stable. I made the mistake early on when I was getting skate back and other problems in thinking I just needed to move the tool faster to get through where the tool was skating back. It took a while to realize that it was the approach and keeping the bevel on the work that were critical and speed was then irrelevant.

Wonderful explanation of using bowl gouges. I seem to have a problem with burnishing the inside of bowls as I leave the end grain that shows up when sanding with 320 or 400. How do I fix that? Some say to grind the heal off the gouge?
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 11 ай бұрын
Thank you sir for kind words 🤗 Indeed grinding the heel away will help you out, but in this case if you still see the marks on high grits that tells me that you haven't sand properly on lower grits.... I use my lowest grit to remove everything that doesn't belong on the bowl, and the rest of the sandpaper just removes scratches from previous grit... hope that makes sense... I'll do a video on proper sanding as well...😀

You are an excellent instructor. I can't believe this video doesn't have at least a million views. I would love to see this same type video only using a dry hardwood blank. I've found that turning green elm is a whole different thing from turning dry oak.

Thanks Tomislav for a great video. I haven’t tried to freehand bring a gouge to the asymmetrical grind yet, but this video is getting me closer to trying. One question, was the blank kiln (fully) dried, well aged or fresh cut? Thanks. By the way I’m looking forward to tomorrow and the next four-way video with you, Sam Angelo, Mike Peace and Richard Raffan. I’ve really enjoyed the past videos. Thanks again. Cheers, Tom

Hi Tom, thank you very much for watching and support 4ways🤗 The bowl blank wasn't all green but not dry, around 25% moisture.... Try sharpening by hand, other then a little bit of steel there is nothing to loss... Once again thank you 😀

Hi very well explained As novice what would you recommend as entry lath. And curious as to what make of lath you use keep it up very interested in your channel
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 9 ай бұрын
Thank you very much, on this video I have older lathe which I sold but if you go to my videos , just a few days back you'll see new one.... For starting out, you should consider buying best you can afford.... Try to stay away from reeves drive and go more on VFD lathes, also in term of size I never got order for bowl more them 13-14 inches diameter so to me there is no sense of buying extremely big lathe... Most midi lathes today have rotating headstock and they are up to 14inch and with outboard you can turn bigger stuff in need be.... So something like 16inch diameter lathe with at least 1,5hp will cover you for long long time....
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning 9 ай бұрын
Also if you only want to turn small stuff then there are great smaller Lathes like jet,laguna, rikon and Record power, and they are not as expensive.... Just look for all cast iron , dont buy with steel or even worse aluminium beds as you'll have difficult time to enjoy the journey

Tomislav, this was very informative. I have all my bowl gouges ground to a 60 degree angle (you tube recommendation from somebody at some time). You make me now want to experiment with different grinds, especially the asymmetric grind. I was surprised to hear that you have your bowl gouges at 40 - 45 degrees. I use that on spindle gouges. Maybe this is why I tend to struggle on the inside of bowls and it feels like it takes a long time. You seem to slice through the bowls like warm butter. You're now one of my favorite turners on You Tube. THANK YOU!

Thank you,glad to hear that sir.... I have 45 deegres ish bevel as it gives me cleaner cut on top 2/3 of the bowl and the rest I do with scrapers..... Never stop experiment, even if you find it a fail it ends up being succesfull.... That is how I remember to start again getting a burr on scrapers with SCREWDRIVER 😅 Once again thank you

Great video as usual.. I have several Carter & Sons tools.. The RollsRoyce of turning tools in my opinion, including the wodbeater and they are amazing. With my 3HP Robust AB lathe Carter & Sons tools makes short work of just about anything. I also love the heavy handles which add heft and dampen vibration. Fabulous company to deal with as well that provide a really personal service. I have no affiliation with them, just love what they do.

Looks like it's time for more power :) Vicmarc VM300, Robust American Beauty, Oneway2436 or Stratos XL! This was a nice presentation and much more accurate than a lot of youtubers. The answers to why turners do things the way they do is important to know. Raffan and his use of spindle gouges comes to mind. The why is because they can do the job and are cheaper to purchase. I admit I don't use them for bowls but I know why!

Thank you, Tomislav, for this truly outstanding, instructional video! I'm just beginning and have only turned a couple of bowls and your video really helped me to more clearly understand how to make good cuts with the bowl gouges. Your patient explanations along with the great camera angles are excellent. It was very helpful that you repeated how to make the cuts correctly several times and also demonstrated what happens when the angles are not correct. I'll be watching many more of your videos for sure. Many thanks! 👏

Excellent demonstration with really good sharp close-up video, something many others turners could aim for to better illustrate their gouge/s use and approach to the wood. Too many like to include themselves in the video, which, means the shot is never close enough. Top work as usual my friend in wood turning. Greetings from Tasmania Australia 👍😁🇦🇺🦘

I have been turning for about 5 years. I am self taught (as will become apparent in a minute). I have recently begun watching videos of people who truly know how to turn. I have turned and sold a decent number of bowls but I never knew how much more work I was doing than I needed to. I had bought a fairly decent bowl gouge but had no proper idea how to use it and I briefly attempted to use it in the same fashion as I would my spindle gouge. After a few tragic failures, I basically put it away and continued using my spindle gouge. I would never have attempted to use a bowl gouge in what I now know to be the proper manner. I saw a video recently where I watched a guy use a bowl gouge the right way and I was very blown away. Then I watched this spectacular video. Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this.
