At the time this book was written it was the era when diesels like Class 40s were being delivered to British Railways.

Which is hilarious because they were withdrawn in 1976 while people still love the charm of steam engines, visit them on heritage railways and the future development of biomass fuel leans to the possibility of them making a comeback.

The diesel engine sound at the beginning is an English Electric, which is what the diesel in this story is (Type 4). The sound is quite distinguishable.

Whenever I see the universal portraiture in the illustrations, I can't tell if the Edwards (Peter and his wife Gunvor) did one each for every book starting from this one. I know they both share such amazing dynamic chemistry in making art but I can't tell one's style of art from the other. Still, I just am in complete love with their artistry in the illustration pictures.

@pruehali You have to take into consideration coach size and the amount of rolling stock. A special would be lighter than a princepal express which they were pulling in triple header. Percy was also holding them back from gordons hill on. The A1x terriers(stepney) and the GWR 57XXs (Duck) are a lot more powerful than they look. Ive seen footage of a 57xx pulling a train of 8 large coaches at about 50mph unisisted.

Exactly a 4 axle saddle tank isn't set up to run at any real speed. A loco like percy would just be used in a factory or colliery. It would use all of the steam it could produce fairly quickly

The real life 57XX locos do not have the cuboid sandboxes at the front of the running plate. This was an illustration goof by C.R. Dalby (who else?) and thus was adapted into the television series model.
@e-122psi32 жыл бұрын
@@gregkiteos1936 Actually I checked and Dalby DIDN'T draw the sandboxes, just a flat tank covering most of his running plate (which I heard is closer to a 64xx). John Kenney seemed to start that (who Awdry actually approved) and later even the Edwards who drawn this book started adding them.

I’m wondering how, two tank engines can pull 15 express coaches
@gregkiteos19363 жыл бұрын
GWR 57XX panniers are quite strong for their smallish size and Stepney, although a lot smaller, would have added a little more power, although they wouldn't have been able to maintain a high speed for long. At least they only had to go halfway.
@stinkyroadhog13472 жыл бұрын
Both Duck and Stepney are quite a bit stronger than they appear. It wouldn't have been too difficult for them on flat level ground. Inclines and distance are their only concerns
@williamfincher2260 Жыл бұрын
It helps that they were able to get a good start with sand on the rails. With their fast speed, and all the momentum, they were able to reach the hill. Plus, two engines and many coaches meant their was more mass and acceleration. This, more momentum. I believe that is how they made it up the hill.

@oron615 жыл бұрын
I mean, the incidents shown here are often more pleasant than modern US railways in the headlines. British legacy train wrecks resulted in deaths and fires. US trainwrecks nowadays seem to contain fuel explosions and mass exacuations as firefighters put on their gas masks and HazMat chemists rush in.

@cornholio435 true! I've seen Austeritis "Royal Pioneer/Warrington", "The Duke" and "Lord Phil" pull 6-7 coaches unasssisted at Peak Rail, Matlock with my own eyes, so Ironically at the Mid Hants their Thomas could've been pulling coaches at the events with the other engines, it certainly did from footage I saw of Matlock's Thomas event featuring Thomas and James from the Mid Hants and Annie from Embsay posing as Percy.

I’ve got to say while I love the original, I slightly prefer the show version a bit more. The greater exposition at the beginning explains Class 40’s sudden appearance and just of the changed dialogue/narration is actually an improvement, particularly when the narrator is talking about how the diesel snuck out at the end

What happens to bug me about this episode is the way the beginning went. It doesn't make sense that it would automatically start of with the Diesel showing up with no explanation as to how he got there in the first place. The same thing happened in Super Rescue, with Bear and Spamcan. You can't do such a thing like that to beginning sequences of these episodes or others. It makes no sense, is confusing, and confuses readers.
@gold95234 жыл бұрын

@RoadhogTime13 How do you know? Only source i can find is E2s have a tractive effort of 21,307lbf were as GWR 5700 class have a tractive effort of 22,515lbf. Thats not that big a difference. Avonside 0-4-0sts have a tractive effort of 11,100lbf which makes Percy much weaker than both Duck and Thomas.

I know that duck and stepney pulled the express but in ttte Gordon is portrayed as the strongest engine on the Sodor railway.
@TheYardLimit9 жыл бұрын
+mayo hosko An A1 Pacific has about 29,000lbs of tractive effort, an A3 would have around 32,000lbs. Under ideal conditions, Duck and Stepney would have about the same amount of tractive effort. An A1x in ideal conditions with large cylinders produces almost 11,000lbs of tractive effort and the Great Western 57xx class produces about 22,500lbs of tractive effort. I would imagine Gordon specking closer to an A1 pacific, and the real Stepney has the smaller variety of cylinders for push-pull working, and in turn likely would produce around 8000lbs of tractive effort.
@TheYardLimit9 жыл бұрын
Adhesion is all about how much weight is on the driving wheels. Duck and Stepney would have 100% adhesion since all of their wheels and axles are driven. Gordon on the other hand only has 3 of his 6 axles driven plus all of his fuel in a tender. So while he may appear much larger, and would likely produce more horsepower than Duck and Stepney combound, they would most likely produce just a bit more tractive\drawbar force.
@iron13498 жыл бұрын
+mayo hosko there's also a story where Duck, Thomas and Percy pull the express, which would have to be at least 20 coaches long.
