How to Tie the Most Useful Knot in the World - The Bowline
In this short video, I will show you how to tie the Bowline in 3 different ways. This will also include the Cowboy Bowline and the Dutch Bowline.
The Bowline is a particularly useful loop knot as it will not slip when under load and is also very strong. The Bowline is also relatively easy to undo when it has been under strain.
The "True" Bowline has the working end terminating within the actual loop, where as the Dutch Bowline or Cowboy Bowline the working end terminates on the outside of the loop.
There seems to be a lot of debate as to the benefits and strengths of the Bowline over the Dutch Bowline.

I have found the failure of the Dutch bowline is the tail being on the outside is more likely to snag & take load if lowering near something that can catch it. If that tail takes load either way it will capsize the knot into a slip. I do like the version of this rhyme where the drunk sailor pops out of the bar for air swings around the lamp post & heads straight back in for another round.

Thanks for the splendid video. As a former farm kid, woodsman, construction worker, and all-round outdoorsman I love the bowline. Now in my golden years, I teach nature and camp skills to kids. I find it very hard to teach modern kids to tie knots. Some don't even know how to tie shoes correctly. Seeing your demo and the pace of it might help me teach them. Thanks again.

Fantastic. I found the second method you showed how to tie the dutch is incredibly easy to remember and quick. I was in boy scouts and had to learn a bunch of knots, I only remember a few of them, and the bowline was NOT one I could remember. Thanks for the vid. Probably the most useful and versatile knot.

Hi Johnny, thx for the vid. Perfect explanation. There are many different names for the bowline in the marked. If you take a look into the Knot-Bible "Clifford W. Ashley - Book of knots", the technically correct designation for the bowline (working-end-outside-the-loop) is: "LEFT-HAND BOWLINE #1034.5" colloquial language: Dutch-bowline Cowboy-bowline ... Cheers

Which direction you go through the slip knot/marlin spike hitch determines whether you get trad. Or cowboy bowline. Go through the most obvious way as in your videos and you get the cowboy. Going in the opposite way, always a normal bowline. Not any more time or trouble. Great video, this is my favorite bowline method. Use it or one hand method mainly depending on the physical position and if I can prep the slip prior. I prefer the cowboy, especially when around a tree/post to keep the loop out of the way.

Doing this knot with thicker ropes: Let the rope straight on the floor pointing to you (one end next to you, other end away). Take the working end at hand and let the rest of the rope on the floor. Do a movement just like a whip with this rest of the rope that way to make the loop facing the right. The loop must be line toward you over the line toward away. And now do the rest of movements just like the video has shown, keeping the rope on the floor all the time.

I like your lessons. I always use the quick version of this. As young I learned to do it with one hand, at least the final half, while using the other hand to stay safe on deck. My guess about the controversy about the two ways is that it comes from formal training; You must learn to do it the right way always, and never do it the left way (or whatever ironic name used). Practice makes consistency. The difference is huge when this same knot is tied as a sheet bend.

@championskyeterrier
@championskyeterrier 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent video but I have a warning/caution about the marlinspike hitch or slipknot method, the second method you demonstrate in your video. In my experience practicing this method it has the possibility of total failure of the knot! The slipknot has to "invert" itself when pulled tight in order to form the bowline. It seems to me that depending on the line and the circumstances this does not always happen! If the slipknot does not "invert" then you have no knot at all and the bitter end of the rope simply slips through and all falls apart! Now you can push on the slipknot with your finger while tightening down to force this critical event to happen and ensure that the knot forms properly, but this is a danger I feel people learning this method of tying a bowline should be aware of!

Hi Johnny, just wondering... would you use the bowline knot as an anchor to your trailer to then tie a load down? I have seen people use the clove hitch as their initial anchor knot but have heard it could eventually slip. I have even wondered about using the anchor bend as the initial knot but as I am unsure I would hate to tie down a load and have the initial knot be unsecure. Could you please suggest and initial tie down knot? Thanks in advance, love the easy tutorials.

I like the bowline where I need a non moving loop tied around something. I find it easier than other choices that I know of such as a fig 8 follow through, carrick bend or an alpine butterfly which can be tied with similar qualities. If I need something less likely to shake loose, I generally chose the alpine butterfly. It is more complicated than the other choices but I find easier to do because it i doesn flop around as much when tying like the carrick and faster than a fig 8 follow through,. Generally though, the bowline is my go-to. Either style is fine, I kind of like the dutch method.

Bowling is the first hitch or bend they teach you in the Royal Navy. I can't see the benefit of with left or right handed bowlines being stronger or weaker than the other. I recall watching a cowboy go fetch a stray horse and take a rope create the flipped loop and then run it through the harness to lead the horse. I've also seen them do a similar trick and make an instant harness. Loved the great instruction and bit of history on this knot. THANKS!

The direction that the rabbit goes around the tree will determine what kind of bowline you end up with. The last knot you showed is also called a snap bowline. Topically with a snap bowline the person tying the knot is in a hurry and does not care if the end is in the loop. I learned that coming around to the other side will; however, keep the end on the outside of the snap bowline.

I have always called these knots as the in side and out side bowlines. There is said to have a 3% different with the inside bowline being the stronger.

I understand that the Cowboy Bowline is sometimes called the the Dutch bowline, considered by the Dutch Navy as superior? Thank you so much for letting me know alternative wording.

Good descriptive video. The one version I cannot grasp is the one hand bowline. Does that play off the Marlin Spike Hitch method? Very helpful series. Thanks

I considered the single handed bowline, but ended up rejecting it. It seems that in order to tie it, you need good conditions?? No panic, no rough seas, no falling debris. I am at the moment trying to investigate if it is actually taught on any safety course. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.

Yeah. That’s why I said I can’t get it. Seems really hard and only needed in a crisis. I guess I will give up on that one. Unlikely to use it.

I started a long time ago to "over explain" as I have one subscriber who is blind. He and his granddaughter follow the videos, he listens and she watches. He ties the knot and if he goes wrong his granddaughter corrects him. A lovely little bond must be growing between them?
